Control Charts
14
THE FIRST CONTROL CHART WAS DEVELOPED BY WALTER SHEWHART IN 1924
SOME PRACTITIONERS REFER TO THEM AS PROCESS BEHAVIOR CHARTS
A CONTROL CHART IS A SPECIALIZED TIME SERIES PLOT DESIGNED TO HELP IDENTIFY ABNORMAL PATTERNS OF VARIABILITY IN A PROCESS
THE INDIVIDUALS/MOVING RANGE AND X-BAR AND R CHARTS ARE AMONG THE MOST WIDELY USED CONTROL CHARTS FOR CONTINUOUS DATA

What is a control chart?
A control chart detects changes in a process over time.

Why do customers use control charts?
Control charts answer questions such as:
► Is the process stable over time?
► Is the process mean or variation shifting due to different lots of raw material?
► Is the process mean or variation shifting due to external causes, such as environmental conditions?
► Is the variation between production runs or batches higher than expected?
