Annual Campaign The Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation continues to grow achieving nearly $1.4
million in assets at the end of the 2018-2019 fiscal year. These assets were garnered through annual
campaign donations, special fundraising events, and the continual development of scholarship funds.
The Foundation has completed its annual campaign for this fiscal year in June of 2019 and is pleased to
report more than $39,000 raised. This year’s pledges and donations were received from local businesses,
community residents, faculty, staff, and board members.
Fundraising Events The Foundation hosted 3 fundraising events for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. The year kicked off with the annual
Black Bear 5K that was hosted in September 2018 which brought in over $1,600 in funds. In October 2018, the
fun continued with the Foundation’s annual Corks & Kegs jazz event featuring craft beer, wine, and culinary
delights. Amazing gift baskets were auctioned off at the end of the evening, and the event brought in over
$8,000 in donations. Finally, in March 2019 the Foundation hosted Puttapalooza. The annual mini-golf event
takes place in Penn Highlands very own hallways and boasts food, drinks, team prizes, auctions, and great
competition. The event brought in over $10,000 in donations for the Foundation, the largest in the event’s
history. We look forward to hosting more fun-filled days in 2020!
One Book Interactive Reading Program Penn Highlands is proud to host the only One Book One Community program in the area. The Foundation
works with coordinator, Dr. Barbara Zaborowski, the College’s Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, to
locate funding for this project. Over 1,200 4th-6th grade students and school faculty attended the event in
May 2019. The book chosen was “Stepping On Cracks” by Mary Downing Hahn. The author was available to
sign autographs during the event. The primary theme of the book was WWII, however the setting is in
Maryland and discussed impacts of war on the local home front.
The program has learning outcomes each year centered on the program’s theme, relation to Pennsylvania
history, and world events. A significant amount of the $4,277 in donations received were made by College
employees and the College itself donated the use of its building and the volunteer time of over 40 College
employees.
Scholarships In the 2018-2019 academic year over $22,000 in academic scholarship funds were awarded to deserving
Penn Highlands Community College students. These hard working students met the guidelines of the schol-
arships outlined and administered by the Foundation. The Foundation currently manages 21 scholarship
awards annually. The Foundation strives to build relationships with both individuals and business members
throughout the Greater Johnstown region.
EITC The Foundation acts as the administrator of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program operat-
ed by the College. In 2018-2019 the Foundation received $8,700 in EITC donations from local businesses. These
contributions support the Accelerated College Education (ACE) program, which allows high school students
the earn college credits in advance of graduating from high school. These EITC funds allow the cost of these
college credits to be reduced, therefore creating an early college career more affordable. The ACE program
partners with over 50 schools in the region and serves of 1,200 students annually.
