CELL PHONE LOCKERS Dear parents, The School has invested in the purchase of 50 new “cell phone lockers” to assist boys in the safekeeping of valuables such as cell phones, wallets and keys and to mitigate incidents of theft of these items within the School. These lockers have already been installed outside Mr Motlogeloa’s office and will be monitored by CCTV camera. The lockers will be available on a rental basis, on a first come, first served principle for a once off deposit of R250 per locker. When the learner leaves Jeppe, or no longer wishes to rent the locker, the deposit will be returned in full provided the key is also returned. A charge of R50.00 will be levied to have a lost key replaced. Lockers are required to be emptied each evening and responsibility will not be taken for any valuables left overnight or during holiday periods. We urge parents to make use of this facility in order to safeguard personal items and anyone wishing to rent a locker is to please contact Gail Murton in the Finance Office at [email protected] as soon as possible.

ARMISTICE DAY In keeping with the long standing tradition of the school, Jeppe Boys honoured the fallen brave in the Armistice Day Service on Friday 11 November.

With bad weather threatening the service was shortened in order for Mr Dempsey to read the roll of honour, the flags to be lowered and the last post played. This was fortuitous as just as these formalities had been concluded, the heavens opened. However, with speed and the pipe band keeping the spirit of the moment alive, everyone was moved from the War Memorial into the Payne Hall where the service continued and the wreathes were laid.

Lowering of the flags and last post Old Boy Dignitaries and leaders of the school commemorate

the176 brave men of the Jeppe Family who lost their lives Unfortunately, as the weather did not improve and with the danger of lightning around, the parade was not to proceed to the Horse Memorial Cross on Kensington Ridge to lay a wreath. The get-together of old friends and dignitaries in the Oribi House dining room where tea, coffee and snacks were served, was greatly enjoyed by all present and a lot of “catching-up” took place. Many old boys only manage to see each other once a year at this very special gathering. HOSTELS – YEAR END NOTICE The Jeppe Boarding Establishment will close on Tuesday 29 November 2016, the day that the last exams are written at the school. ALL hostel boys are to depart the hostel by no later than 18:00 on that day. The rooms are to be completely cleared and no belongings may be left in the hostels for the duration of the December holidays. School will re-open on 11 January 2017 and it is compulsory for all boarders to return to their hostels by 18:30 on Tuesday 10 January 2017. Boarder dress code for 2017 All boarders are also reminded that they are required to purchase a Jeppe Boarder Golf Shirt costing R150.00 (available from the Jeppe Uniform Shop from the end of November 2016) as this will form part of the prescribed dress code for all boarders at the start of the 2017 academic year. It is suggested

that two of these shirts are purchased as boys will be required to wear this shirt to all evening meals and on weekends. Mike Bechet Head of Boarding VALEDICTION The highlight of the academic year, the Valediction Ceremony was held in the Memorial Hall on the 20 th October with the Grade 12’s, parents, families and educators all in attendance. The guest speaker this year was Mr John Abbott, which was truly fitting as he and his family have been very involved in the renovation and development of the Jeppe Aquatics Centre for most of this year. As an extremely successful businessman, Mr Abbott with his vast wealth of knowledge and experience, was able to give the boys valuable insights and guidance in respect of life outside of the school environment as well as using what they have learnt over the past 12 years of schooling. Kyle Grundlingh, received the Rotary Cup for Service above Self, a most deserved award for a young man who gave fully of himself to the school this year in his capacity as Head Boy. Kyle also received the Dan Swart Award for the Best Art Portfolio and the David Goble Award for Outstanding Creative Writing.

The Headmaster’s Award, awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster, to a boy who has stood out, made an impact or displayed special behaviour during the course of the year was shared by Hacjivah Dayimani, Matthew Edwards and Sheldon v/d Berg.

The top learner for this year, receiving the Dux Award for Academic Excellence, is Ashwin v/d Merwe who received a first place in Information Technology, second place in Mathematics and Physical Science and third place in Accounting and Life Orientation. Ashwin showed quite clearly that consistency is the hallmark of a successful student.

Michael Peneda received the Senator Haitas Award which is awarded to a Grade 12 boy, other than the Head Boy, who in the eyes of his peers and the staff has best exemplified the qualities of leadership, discipline, devotion to duty and “esprit de corps”. Michael also received the Afeltra Award for the Best Art Piece.

The Warburton Trophy for Meritorious Service was awarded to Ntokozo Zilwa who was an exemplary leader as chairman of the RCL. Ntokozo raised awareness of the value of education when he joined the CEO of Rolfes in the annual CEO Sleepout.

Mandlenkosi Ndabula, caused quite a stir and was much loved in Basel during the Pipe Bands’ visit this year for the way he charismatically led the band during their stay and he received the Robbie Coelho Award for Overall Achievement in Cultural Activities. Mandlenkosi was also a leading member of the First Aid Team.

The Meredith Award for the Sportsman of the Year went to Tyrone Green, The Scott Cup for School Spirit to Kwazi Gumede and The Glendinning Award for Outstanding Achievement to Mpho Tladi. These three gentlemen have featured regularly in the school communication (newsletters, Twitter, and newspaper articles) throughout the year.

ADDRESS TO THE SCHOOL BY OLD BOY RASTA RASIVHENGE (27th OCTOBER) A week after being announced the S.A. Rugby Referee of the year for 2016, Rasta Rasivhenge addressed the Boys Assembly on Thursday 27th October. It was wonderful to see the warm and heartfelt response he received from the boys as he spoke to them from the heart about his achievements, accolades and more importantly his disappointments. His advice on dealing with “life’s lessons” which are often difficult and seem harsh at the time, came from his own experiences and really rang true with the boys as they related well to his open and honest approach. It was a genuine instance of a “big brother” teaching the art of working with your circumstances in life and remaining humble in the glow of success. In cementing a phenomenal year for Rasta, it was announced on Sunday 13 November at the World Rugby Awards that he had been chosen as the 2016 Referee of the Year, an award shared with Alhambra Nievas from Spain. It is always pleasing to see old Jeppe boys achieving great things and doing so well on the world stage.

As an old Oribi boy, Rasta enjoyed time with the Oribi boys of 2016

Leadership Camp 2016 Report by Matthew De Bie The drowsy afternoon sun hung low on the horizon, its blazing glare was mere minutes away from dipping behind the shadow of the mountain. Our Potjie pots were warm on the fire and our cold showers had washed away the dirt stains of the day’s activities, we stood in a circle and spoke amongst ourselves. “It wasn’t that bad” was the common theme. Sure we’d run an obstacle course, explored the camp grounds and got to know each other slightly better, but it was still a ‘school camp’, surely nothing that bad was going to happen. All the talk of pain and Mr Hanson eagerly rubbing his hands together was probably just fear tactics. The camp seemed to be a relaxing break from the city.

12 hours later, as I washed that dirt and cuts off my hands, that brief moment of chatting around the camp fire seemed very far away. I remember wondering why we hadn’t been told to unpack our stuff into the cabins. Well, we all realised too late what was happening as a camp councillor checked a map and calmly announced that we pack an overnight bag and follow him. 15 minutes later our group set out on the 2km walk to our sleeping place, in complete darkness (torches were to be left behind). Rustling bushes, strange abandoned buildings and wicked thorns guided our way. Some huddled in groups, while others took the pitch black march in their stride. Tempers flared, jokes cracked and stories told as we slept under a roof of stars, the only lights were the moon and a distant town.

We were woken in complete darkness. ‘That’s not right’ I thought, my watch read 4:30 a.m. but how could that be the case? What followed was a return trek through the sleeping farm, and our reward for braving the night was a grueling P.E. session. I would tell you how long it was or what we did, but at some point my brain stopped working. It only kicked back in as the sun stuck its head over the horizon and our group defiantly sang war cries as we got acquainted with our physical limits.

Page 11: JEPPE HIGH SCHOOL FOR BOYSjeppeboys.co.za.dedi539.nur4.host-h.net/wp-content/... · 2016-12-06 · financial presentation in a most comprehensive and professional manner. The school

After an hour or two we were back on the go, this time our task was to scour the farm looking for orienteering pegs and each one we found would earn us parts to a Go-Kart we had to build and then race. The race required the Karts to be push powered, a grueling task even for top sportsmen. After the race we were promised hamburgers, a promise the hostel boys intended to hold the camp to. Our teams of 10 then split into 5 man groups and organised to tackle different objectives in the given 2 hours. One group hiked the mountain and river areas, while the other scoured the fields opposite the koppie. Exploring revealed that the ruins which we had thought to be quite hair-raising the night before, weren’t quite as creepy during the day.

The day wore on and included logic puzzles, dodgeball and (finally) warm showers. It was hinted that everything we were doing was leading up to something big. ‘Come on there’s only one day left, what are they going to do?’ We’d underestimated the camp again. By 9 ’o’ clock the next morning, I knew the immense challenge that lay ahead. We were given another map, this one covering a much larger area, and were told that each numbered point on the map represented a challenge or location we had to visit to get supper, not lunch, supper. The fruit table was raided and bottles filled to the brim as supplies were gathered for the day ahead. What a day it was. 13 hours and over 25 km’s later we’d survived all the camp could throw at us. Claustrophobic tunnels, rafting, hiking, obstacle courses, stretcher bearing, jumping off buildings, rock climbing, navigating tree’s, crawling under barbed wire fences, crossing rivers, and finally abseiling in the pitch black. It wasn’t about who came first, but rather how we grew as a team and as individuals.

Page 12: JEPPE HIGH SCHOOL FOR BOYSjeppeboys.co.za.dedi539.nur4.host-h.net/wp-content/... · 2016-12-06 · financial presentation in a most comprehensive and professional manner. The school

We all had to face a fear at some point on that day as we ran through overgrown paths and climbed hills in the blazing heat. I was never the strongest or quickest in my team, but I could help and excel at some challenges. Leadership camp was not something I’d likely have done willingly, but I’m glad I did. I learnt that even if I was scared of a challenge, as long as I pretended I knew what I was doing, and that I could handle whatever came next I was fine. In fact, after a while I stopped pretending because I wasn’t scared anymore, I knew I could do it and I trusted my team to help me where they could, we all did. We grew as a group and made new friendships on that harsh weekend, and even although I may have hated it in the moment, I’ll miss those few days of running around that farm.
