We extend a warm Jeppe welcome to our new staff members, (who you will get to meet in this newsletter), that joined us at the beginning of the term. We hope and trust that during their time at Jeppe High School for Boys they will grow and develop, both professionally and personally. Congratulations to all learners and staff who were involved in Inter Provincial and National sporting and cultural events during the holiday. Your hard work and dedication has resulted in your outstanding achievements. The matrics are now in the final stage of their high school career with the commencement of their prelim examinations on 04 September 2017, a few short weeks away. Please see, a little further in this newsletter, a most informative academic guideline from Mrs Rattray which is extremely useful to not only the matrics but learners of all grades. This past weekend saw the conclusion of the winter sporting programme which ended on a high note with all teams performing well against Parktown Boys High School. The hockey teams had a highly successful season with the rugby teams producing mixed results. My thanks to all the MICs, coaches, parents and staff for their involvement and commitment. Outside classroom activity is important in the growth and development of our boys and we encourage them to take part in at least one of the sporting or cultural activities taking place this term. Looking forward to warmer weather, dedication to academic excellence and fun and good achievements on the sports fields. MR ANTON DEMPSEY HEADMASTER THE END OF THE YEAR IS ALMOST WITH US. Deputy Principal, Mrs. Collette Rattray, offers the following advice: I was looking at my year planner the other day and I realised how little time there is before the final exams are upon us. This is especially true for the matrics. I’m sure many of them are thinking, “I’ve just written mid-year examinations for 4 weeks; now it’s time to relax,” but actually that was just the warm-up. The real pressure starts now. Let me break down the rest of the year for matric learners: Term 3 classes: 24 July-31 August (6 weeks) Preliminary examinations: 4-22 September (3 Weeks) 26-29 October – Revision/Consolidation (4 days) 2-6 October – October break/Spring School (1 week) 9-13 October – Return of prelim examinations (1 week) 16-20 October – Study leave/IT P1/AP Maths/Visual Art Practical exams written (1 week) 23 October – Official start of final matric examinations.

14 August 2017 Newsletter 9/2017 FROM THE HEADMASTERS DESK Welcome back to the third term after what I hope has been a good winter holiday for everyone. We extend a warm Jeppe welcome to our new staff members, (who you will get to meet in this newsletter), that joined us at the beginning of the term. This is especially true for the matrics. I’m sure many of them are thinking, “I’ve just written mid-year examinations for 4 weeks; now it’s time to relax,” but actually that was just the warm-up. The real pressure starts now. Let me break down the rest of the year for matric learners:

Term 3 classes: 24 July-31 August (6 weeks)

Preliminary examinations: 4-22 September (3 Weeks)

26-29 October – Revision/Consolidation (4 days)

2-6 October – October break/Spring School (1 week)

9-13 October – Return of prelim examinations (1 week)

16-20 October – Study leave/IT P1/AP Maths/Visual Art Practical exams written (1 week)

23 October – Official start of final matric examinations.

The next 4 months are going to fly past. My advice is to be prepared. Don’t waste the next three weeks; use them productively. Here are some suggestions:

Get organised. Get a planner and write down the dates above so that you can see what is coming at you. Add in your other

commitments like cycle tests dates, due dates for assessments, sports practices and games, as you receive these.

Display this prominently or be able to access it easily, if you choose to use a digital planner.

If you can see that some weeks will be busier than others, you can get ahead during your quieter periods.

Now that you know what has to be completed, plan your study time. Decide how much time you want to give to each subject –

some may require more than others, depending on your strengths and weaknesses.

Prepare your study space. A study space should be less cluttered and free from distractions.

Use a study method that works for you.

Do as many past papers as you can. These prepare you for the structure of the papers and the style of questioning that you

can expect. Past papers and memoranda can be downloaded from the GDE’s website: www.education.gpg.gov.za. Click on the

tab called “Learners”, then select “National Senior Certificate”.

Work together. Get together with friends for a study session. You may have questions that they have the answers to and vice

versa. As long as you make sure you stay focused on the topic for an agreed amount of time, this can be one of the most

effective ways to challenge yourself.

Get help if you are struggling. Your teachers are available to help you, even once exams have started. Ask for an extra lesson if

you need help.

Take regular breaks while studying and remain active.

Eat healthy foods and get enough sleep.

Don’t let anxiety overwhelm you. Speak to someone if you feel you are not coping.

As with all things, being committed is the key. You don’t see results at the gym if you only go once a week. The same is true with studying: the training only pays off if you do it regularly. I often say to boys in class: none of you dispute that to make it into a first team in any sport, you must be prepared to run further, train harder and for longer; you can’t expect to play First Team Academics if you’re not prepared to do the same.

Athletics Ntuthuko Ndimande represented South Africa in the 800m at the IAAF U18 World Championships in Nairobi in July 2017, where he came 4th in his heat in a time of 1:56:16. He unfortunately did not qualify for the final, however this was an outstanding achievement bearing in mind that Ntuthuko should still be competing in the U17 age group.

Basketball Trystan Speck was invited to attend a basketball camp at Duke University in the USA during the school holidays where he experienced the coaching of “Coach K” who was the coach of the American Dream Team that won gold at the Olympics. He was also the mentor and coach of Michael Jordan. The feedback from the camp is that Trystan is a true gentleman and was an absolute pleasure to host. Jeppe Old Boys, Tim and David Blackman, purchased a Jeppe 125 Anniversary book as a gift from Jeppe High School for Boys to Duke University, which Trystan handed over on the school’s behalf.

Cricket Kgaudise Molefe played in two SA U19 One Day International cricket matches against the West Indies during the holidays where he performed with great credit to his team. On debut, he executed two brilliant run-outs as well as taking 2/33 in 9 overs. In his second game he took 3/51 in 10 overs. Well done Kgaudise. The series was won by the West Indies (who are the reigning U19 world champions) 3-2. A wish of Kgaudise’s was to have his parents watch him play a cricket match as in all his time of playing they had never been able to do this. Mr Dale Jackson arranged and funded for Mr and Mrs Molefe to spend a weekend in Durban for the 1st game of the series in the hopes of watching Kgaudise play. Unfortunately, Kgaudise was injured for this game and did not play, however got to spend some time with his parents. Due to the thoughtfulness of Mr Jackson and the unfortunate circumstances that prevailed, a gentleman at Cricket SA then flew Mr and Mrs Molefe to Pietermaritzburg where they got to watch Kgaudise play. Kgaudise and his parents wish to sincerely thank Mr Jackson, Mr Bechet and Cricket SA for these extreme acts of kindness.

Well done to Levert Manje and Linda Ndlovu on being selected to represent Gauteng in the Sunfoil Township Cricket Festival held in KZN during the July school holidays.

Cameron Smook represented the South African Junior Cricket team at the Maccabi Games in Israel in July where they won the gold medal. Congratulations Cameron and the team. Old Boy, Marc Templeton, was part of the medical and support staff for the competition.

Action Cricket held their IPT in Pietermaritzburg during the July school holiday in which quite a few Jeppe Boys were involved. Trials for the SA team were held during this tournament and we congratulate Joshua Taylor, Connor Parsons and Breidyn Schaper on being selected for the 17 and under squad.

Ice Hockey Ryan Boyd (pictured left) represented the Gauteng Eagles U18 and Gauteng Miners U20 teams at the 2017 SA Ice Hockey Federations Inter Provincial Tournament in Cape Town. The U18 Eagles won the gold medal and the U20 Miners received the bronze. Ryan was awarded the Most Valued Player for his game against the Tigers and Best Goalkeeper for both U18 and U20 age groups. Ryan then played for the Sabres Wildcats Super League Team (men’s senior league) in a 3 game tournament against the Cape Town Kings. The first game ended in a penalty shoot-out which Ryan’s team won and he received the Most Valued Player. Another Jeppe boy, Keagan Scholtz, also plays for the Sabres Ice Hockey club and although he is only in Grade 10, he has taken

part in three Inter Provincial tournaments already. Twice as an U16 and once as an U18. Well done to these gentlemen. Pipe Band Well done to the Pipe Band (A Band) who won the regional championships at St Benedicts during the holidays and are 2017 Gauteng champions. Unfortunately, they narrowly missed out to St Benedict’s on being crowned SA champions. Once again, our Pipe Bands (both A and B bands) have had a very successful season.

Rugby Congratulations to Muzi Manyike, Kegan Litchfield, Mr Spilhaus and Mr Hammond who were part of the Lions Craven Week team that won the final game of the week. Mr Spilhaus and Mr Hammond (wearing red caps on right) with the Golden Lions Craven Week Team

Science Olympiad Congratulations to Thomas Kirby who achieved 1st place and James Kamerman who achieved 3rd place in the Science Olympiad. They both progress to the next round.

Thomas and James receiving their certificates from Mr Dempsey

Soccer Well done to Adam Solz and Mauricio Vieira who were respectively awarded Eastern U15 and Eastern U14 District Colours. Well done to these learners on their achievements. NEW STAFF Mr Gareth Kolkenbeck-Ruh has joined the school as deputy principal in charge of discipline. He comes to us from St David’s Marist Inanda where he was deputy principal of the primary school and before that he was head of English at King Edward VII School. He will be teaching English and coaching soccer, cricket and rugby at Jeppe. He says he is delighted to be back at a traditional State boys school. “The first thing that struck me was the sense of tradition here,” he said. “That and how busy everyone is. It’s an exciting place and I’m looking forward to working here.

Ms Elzanné Dietrich is teaching Afrikaans to grades 9 and 10. Most recently, she was at Germiston High School for two years and before that she taught at Laerskool Orion in Alberton. “It’s very different at Jeppe,” she said. “I’ve never been at a boys-only school before and, of course, it’s quite different from a primary school. Her initial impressions are that the boys are very spontaneous, but disciplined and well-mannered. “I am sure I am going to get on well with them as I settle down,” she said. “And the staff have all gone out of their way to make me feel welcome.”

Mrs Cwayita Fungeni is teaching in the English department. She previously worked in the financial sector, at Allan Gray, and at St John’s College and has a B.Com degree specialising in finance. She found, however, that her real passion is for teaching, so she is in the process of doing a teacher’s diploma. “I chose English as the subject to teach because it is role-changing,” she said. “You can teach real life lessons through English and, hopefully be inspiring as well.” Her first impression of the boys at Jeppe has been that they are very respectful. “There’s a family atmosphere here. There is a sense of unity and it seems like a happy place to be.”

Mr Mohammed Kajee is a Jeppe old boy and he is back at the school to teach biology, science and LO. He has an honours degree in marine biology and was working for an environmental consultancy when the desire to be giving something back became too strong and he decided to change direction and go into teaching. He is busy studying for a diploma in education. “It’s great being back at my old school,” he said. “And I have to say that things are great here now. The school looks good and I think the behaviour of the boys is better than in my days. They are respectful and well-behaved and it’s a pleasure teaching them.”

JEPPE’S EXCHANGE STUDENT Davide Begal will be at Jeppe for the next two months as part of an exchange programme organised by AFS Interculture, an international programme aimed at creating opportunities for contact between people from different cultures. He is from Verona in Italy and is being hosted by the Madondo family in Lyndhurst, who having a son at Jeppe, asked if we would take him in, and here he is. He will be spending six weeks in grade 11G and, although he speaks and understands English quite well he did find it all a bit strange at first. “I don’t understand the work, but it will get clearer, I’m sure,” he said. “The boys are all very friendly. They call me Mario – it’s the only Italian name they know, I guess – but they will get to know me.” This school is very different to back home. We don’t wear uniforms and my school has boys and girls, but I’m enjoying my stay so far, the teachers are very helpful and everyone has been very kind to me.

OLD BOYS REUNIONS AND VISIT On Friday, 04 August, Old Boys from the years of 1957, 1967, 1977, 1987, 1997, and 2007 celebrated their respective anniversary reunions at the school. It was most fitting that the Old Boys were at the school the day before the Jeppe/KES fixture as they could enjoy the excitement and anticipation with the current learners while reminiscing of the days they were doing just the same.

A gathering of some of the Old Boys prior to the assembly

It was very special for the learners to welcome these esteemed gentlemen to a formal assembly where Derek Cooper (Duiker 1957) led the address. The boys sat in respectful awe when Mr Cooper read the following poem that he wrote for the occasion.

“Forti Nihil Difficilius”

For a hundred years and more Jeppe High has proudly stood On its rocky granite outcrop A beacon of all that’s good

Through Highveld dust and storm

Summer heat and winter cold South Africans by the score

Have been tempered in its mould

The sons of this great school Have carried its proud banner To fields of wide endeavour In fearless Jeppe manner

This class of fifty-seven It, too, has done its part

And played the game of life With a truly Jeppe heart

“Forti Nihil Difficilius”

-Nothing too difficult for the brave- Is a passionate rallying call We all carry to our grave

We entered the Dashwood gates

Shy, smiling, callow youths We left five short years later

Bearing bright universal truths

What of those universal truths Which shone for us so bright?

Are they still as true tonight Or stale, outdated trite?

Let us reflect on some of these With full minds, not just a pose

“Play the game and not the man Respect those that you oppose”

“Strive to win, not at all costs

They are rivals, not deadly foes” It is these simple maxims

Which in us like fire still glows

Page 10: JEPPE HIGH SCHOOL FOR BOYS€¦ · 4 Liam Stott 10G 85.33 4 Shaur Batohi 11G 84.09 5 Daniel Moffett 10G 85.14 5 Moeketsi Mashibini 11G 83.44 6 Muhammed Akoojee 10G 83.79 6 Jonathan

As we gather here tonight In warm, pleasant reverie

Let us spare a wistful thought For those we cannot see

Sixty years must take its toll

Time is the ultimate thief In remembering first those dead

Fond thoughts will ‘ssuage our grief

How they swam and caught and ran Made their mark each so unique

Let their memory burn tonight Well defined and not oblique

Today we view our past

With its certainty not dimmed Clothed in our present garb With Jeppe values trimmed

Will the future be as bright? It’s not for us to know

Only this tonight is certain Our lives will ebb and flow

We, too, will leave the scene

To younger, stronger men So farewell! Class of “57

We’ll meet, we know not when

And when we do it’s certain The cry from all of us

Will ring true then as it does now “Forti Nihil Difficilius!”

After the assembly, the Old Boys were invited to join the school in the war cry and were then given a guard of honour as they left the hall for each year to move to their respective venues to enjoy some much needed refreshments while catching up with old friends - some not seen for quite some time.

Some of the gents from the Class of 2007

Fifty-three years ago, these four Jeppe oarsmen won the 1964 SA Rowing Championships. On Thursday, 10 August, they met at the school for a celebratory row and tour of the school campus.

From L-R: Warrick Silverthorne, Terry Marsh, Jopie van Honschooten and Nick Dennis

The school is always delighted to have the return of our Old Boys and welcome and cherish the interest they take in the school after so many years.

WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATIONS Women’s Day was celebrated at Jeppe Boys on Tuesday 08 August with a glorious spread of cakes and pastries provided by Mrs Colleen Lilley. In addition each lady member of staff received a pretty posy of flowers from the management of the school. The ladies certainly enjoyed being spoilt and wish to thank Mrs Lilley and Mr Dempsey and the management team for making them feel so very special.
