Indian Literature

Indian Civilization• Indian Civilization flourished between 2500 –

1500B.C.• It was settled in an area known as the Indus

Valley• Indus civilization ended in 1500B.C due to

large migrations

The Aryans and the Vedic Period• Newcomers to the Indus Valley, were called

Aryans.• They were aggressive nomads, warriors and

herders.• The language they spoke gave rise to Old

Persian• The Vedic Period was the first literary period

and lasted from 1500 – 500BC.

The Classical Period: The Legacy of Sanskrit

• The classical period lasted untill about 1000 AD• By 600 BC Sanskrit had become a “frozen”

Language• Sanskrit means “perfect language”• India Produced to epics known as Mahabharata, and Ramayana
