JEREMIAH SR. AND JEMIMA BROWN REYNOLDS Compilation and Analysis by Robert N. Reynolds My paternal lineage goes through Jeremiah, the sixth son of James and Sarah Holmes Reynolds. His birth is recorded as 1711 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He married Jemima Brown in 1747 and together they lived in Greenwich. On 24 September 1748, Jeremiah’s father, James, gave him 50 acres of land next to his brother, Nathaniel. It is interesting that this gift of land occurred a few months after his marriage and in the birth year of his first son, whom he also named Jeremiah. On February 19, 1750/51, Jeremiah sold land to his brother James. 1 Shortly afterwords, in March of 1751, Jeremiah “of Greenwich, Aerial photo of Amenia, New York from Google Earth Fairfield County, Connecticut,” bought land in Lot 19, Great Nine Partners Patent, Dutchess County, New York. The birth records of Jeremiah and Jemima’s children are unknown., but other civil documents exist to verify at least the three children, firstborn Jeremiah in 1748, Shubel in 1752, and the youngest child, David in 1756. 1 Greenwich deed, vol.vii. 1

JEREMIAH SR. AND JEMIMA BROWN REYNOLDS

Compilation and Analysisby Robert N. Reynolds

My paternal lineage goes through Jeremiah, the sixth son of James and Sarah Holmes Reynolds. On February 19, 1750/51, Jeremiah sold land to his brother James.1 Shortly afterwords, in March of 1751, Jeremiah “of Greenwich,

Fairfield County, Connecticut,” bought land in Lot 19, Great Nine Partners Patent, Dutchess County, New York.

The birth records of Jeremiah and Jemima’s children are unknown., but other civil documents exist to verify at least the three children, firstborn Jeremiah in 1748, Shubel in 1752, and the youngest child, David in 1756.

Dutchess County today. Buried to the right of Jeremiah's father, James Esq. (the tall headstone) is his brother James, 11 years his senior, who died six years after his father at the age of seventy-three. At the time of the American Revolution in 1775, Jeremiah Sr. had died -- possibly from complications suffered from his service in the French-Indian War. He and Jemima left three known sons, Jeremiah, Shubel,2 and David. This photo was taken by Dr. Glenn George Reynolds in 2004 at the Smithfield Burial Grounds.

The genealogical notes of Glenn George Reynolds M.D. follow:

JEREMIAH*(SR.)1 REYNOLDS (JAMES*A, JOHN*B, JOHNC) was born 1711 in Greenwich, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, and died Abt. 1768 in Greenwich, Connecticut. He married "JEMIMA" BROWN Abt. 1745 in Greenwich, Connecticut, daughter of BROWN. She was born Abt. 1715 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, and died Unknown.

Notes for JEREMIAH*(SR.) REYNOLDS:Jeremiah and family lived for some time in Greenwich, Conn.; and later in Dutchess county., N.Y. On 24 September 1748, Jeremiah's father, James, gave him 50 acres of land next to his brother, Nathaniel. On February 19, 1750/51, Jeremiah sold land to his brother James [Greenwich deeds, Vol. vii]. In March of 1751, Jeremiah "of Greenwich, Fairfield Co., CT", buys land in Lot 19, great Nine Partners, Dutchess Co. N.Y. This seems to be noted again or recorded in 1755. It appears that this may be the same property, noted in 1754, where he is noted to be on the tax list, at Crum Elbow (Charlotte], Dutchess Co., N.Y. This same notation is noted in each year from 1754-1760. In that year, the term "farm" is used. Some have suggested that this might have implied a move. In looking at the maps of the Great Nine Partners patent, and studying the changes that have progressively occurred over the past 250 years, we have tried to reconstruct the approximate site of that property

2The spelling of the name Shubel can be confusing because in many documents it is spelled Shubal; in some documents of record written in longhand the name is even spelled both ways. To avoid confusion the name is often spelled Shubael when referring to this son of Jeremiah and Jemima.

today, with the help of Kathie Spiers and family of Hunn's Lake. It appears that the site is about 3-4 miles south of Pine Plains, and between North East and Amenia, near Hunns Lake.

In 1761, a Jeremiah Reynolds of Connecticut is recorded as serving in the French and Indian War.

1768 - Jeremiah deceased.

I have personally visited the Dutchess County Court, Record Office, and have copies of the above land records. I have also visited the grave site and tombstone of "James Reynolds, Esq., of Greenwich, son of John"; at the Smithfield burying ground, Amenia precinct, Dutchess County. N.Y. (Glenn G. Reynolds M.D.).

Notes for "JEMIMA" BROWN:While the name "Jemima" has been identified as Jeremiah's wife, we are not totally sure of this given name. She was most likely a "Brown.” Her father is identified as Peter Brown. However she may also have had a brother by the same name. We do find a Peter Brown of Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, purchasing "lot 19" in the Little nine Partners. This is the same property owned by Jeremiah (Sr.). A Peter Brown was made guardian for both Shubel and David after the death of this Jeremiah.
