thus far. More details under

.

Firstly apologies for not being

as prompt as our Editor in

getting the Jerraganda out

early. Unfortunately I have

been suffering from a viral

infection and have struggled

to focus on the computer and

concentrate on trying to

follow in Paul’s footsteps. My

effort will be minimal

unfortunatley, as I am having

to do the Jerraganda in small

doses and my formatting isn’t

as slick as Paul’s.

Again, still no recipes, but

there continues to be hope.

Enjoy this week’s reading.

Weekly Meeting Summary

Meeting Number 809 – 11 September 2014 To

Welcome:

President Paul opened the meeting by inviting

someone, unfortunately memory is not flash and

can’t remember who, to read the Charge and

Glenda to toast Rotary International. President

Paul then welcomed Carolyn for the last time as a

guest and also Bev McKay, another prospective

member who has attended a few meetings and Gavin and Juanita,

guests of the Spencers who are travelling to Tonga with our Club.

Pres Paul also welcomed Hannah, our youth Exchange student, and

Vera our ‘everlasting’ supporter.

Apologies:

Mez advised that apologies had

been received from Marie-Claire,

Kerry, Lynne and Sue Roger.

David, Chris and Liz are on LoA.

Hannah’s German Presentation

We originally hit a glitch with Hannah’s presentation due to the program being in German and an inability to get the

presentation going. However Chilly to the rescue, Hannah was able to share photos of her family and her home and gave us a

great insight into her life in Germany. I didn’t take notes, (forgot I was doing the Jerraganda) and sat back and enjoyed the

presentation. Pres Paul firstly thanked Hannah for her insightful talk about her home and family and then presented the usual

book to be donated to the school library.

Thankyou Hannah Is he done yet? Nope… Finally!

Business Reports

President’s Report

President Paul’s Introduction for tonight:

We have the pleasure of welcoming a new member to our Club

It is the last meeting before our Tonga team departs, led by our Team Leader Chilly Chilman for two weeks to work on the Lapaha Primary School; and

We will hear the first planning details of the forthcoming fun run walk which will be the next major event run by Jerra Rotary

There are also a few church notices from me and the other Directors Pres Paul wasted no time in converting our ‘guest’ Carolyn Hackett into a fully-fledged member of our Club. Pres Paul asked Mez to assist with the induction as the Club Service Director. Pres Paul read out the charter for Rotary and voila! Carloyn is now a fellow Rotarian. Welcome Carloyn!

President Paul advised that he attended the opening of the ACT Sports Hall of Fame last Friday – Jon Wells officiated a very pleasant and well run ceremony attended by various government ministers and sports names. Monday lunchtime Chilly and Pres Paul attended the Canberra Rotary Club meeting where they thanked them for their donation of $2,000 for the Tonga RAWCS venture and discussed their possible future involvement in next year’s follow-up trip. Both boys even wore ties to find that a few of their members did not! Monday evening Pres Paul also attended the AGs 6 weekly meeting with the other reps from our Rotary cluster – Queanbeyan, Queanbeyan West and Bungendore. Kevin Pippard, Pres Bungendore Rotary is running a Car and Bike show on 4 Oct which will take over much of the town – all of our club members are invited to attend wearing their club shirts. Pres Paul advised that you should have seen an email from Paul Roger about the Queanbeyan by Moonlight Cocktail Party on Sat 27 Sep – raising funds for the Queanbeyan Children’s’ Special Needs Group. Finally, meetings while I am away? It’s all good Pres Paul; we have the program in hand. Check Farmers’ Markets swap?? Yes, Mez is doing your Market duty for you.

Rotarian of the Year.

As Bruce was absent for our Changeover Dinner, gallivanting around the States, he was absent for the presentation of his trophy. Paul Roger asked that Pres Paul present both the individual trophy and the perpetual trophy to Bruce on his behalf. Photos say it all!

Secretary’s Report

Treasurer’s Report

We thought Jon was a no show; however he did put in an appearance (in time for dinner) but too late to provide a report.

International

This is the last meeting for the Tonga Team. Chilly advised that they were excited and looking forward to finally getting the

Project underway. Talking is over…. action here we come.

Anyone wishing to keep updated with the Teams progress can check out the Tonga Team Blog at:

Youth and Vocational

Peter fessed up that he forgot the school assembly to present the certificates. He has noted the Dec 16 Assembly in his diary

and Sue will make sure he doesn’t miss another one.

Club Service

Mez reported that next week’s meeting will be a mystery night and likely a very short meeting. The planned German night has

been postponed until the Tonga Team return.

This week our two “grumpy old men” (The

Muppets) thought they were a couple of

mushrooms, sitting in the dark…maybe they

were worried the harsh light would make

them look ‘older’.

Mez reiterated again the need for all members regardless of whether they have a meal or not to provide their apologies to the

Attendance Officer if they cannot make the meeting.

General Business:

Fun Run – 01 Nov 14. Anton advised that Glenn and Bruce are doing the lion’s share of the work at the moment. There will be a

need to jig some of the running route to mitigate risk. Anton advised that he met with the CEO from Children with Special

Needs, the recipients of the event. They are very happy to be the beneficiary. Flyers with a spiel on the organisation will be

produced.

Anton advised that they will need one more person to join the committee. Please contact Anton if you are interested. Terry

suggested that it might be a good idea for Pres Paul to contact some of the MS Mega Swim Organisers to see if they can get

some interest going.

Wine Tour. Online registration is up and running and the process seems seamless. Canberra Club are also interested in coming

along. Reminder to all to register for the wine tour. See a couple of Jerraganda’s back for details.

Rotary Leaders Institute Level 2. Strategic Planning, Club Communication, Foundation. There will be less grants for the 14/15

financial year. Only $33000.00 for District designated funds. Applications must be in by 01 Mar for the following year.

Caption Comp Presentation. Mez was presented with a bottle of wine with the winning caption for

the caption comp. Yay!!

Jon Wells advised that they had moved into the University of Commons Building. They can measure

Elite Athletes. It is a state of the art complex and Jon advised that he would be happy to take our

Club Members through the facility. There are 119 inductees in the Hall of Fame.

Market Master:

Anton has organised a small brochure stand to place flyers for Rotary at the market information stand.

Joker

A total blank here… I do know though that the joker was not won and takings for the night was $44.00.

SGT Fines:

Paul Roger was the fines Master and took $97.00.

Unfortunately no new quotes in Paul’s absence, my word version just doesn’t like it.

Attendance: The acting attendance officer Mez, assessed that with Make Ups the attendance figure for the night

was 90% and it was back to Bailey’s and Port from the President once again.

This week’s report was submitted by Mez.

Despite the car park constantly looking full, the markets were relatively quiet this week with quite a number of stall holders absent.

Where is the ATM? Despite the fact that the ATM was relocated quite some time ago, is was still the most asked question.

An extremely honest market goer handed in a wallet and Mez made an announcement to the market goers. Despite David S complimenting Mez on how clear and concise the message was, it wasn’t until the owner of said wallet went to pay for her goods that she discovered her wallet was missing. She was very relieved when we were able to reunite her with the wallet.

Tamara had her usual panic prior to doing the weekly radio interview.

Bruce took the first parking duty shift and shocked both David and I with his short sleeves, no jacket and the temp was 4.1c.

Our favourite lady in the ute was up to her usual obnoxious standards, not only demanding entry and flashing the card with Ian’s name on it, but also caused quite a ruckus at the stall near our information stand. So much so, that the stall holder came over and asked for some assistance with sorting her out. Both Tamara and Vic ended up having stern words with her. From what I can gather, she is allowed entrance and is allowed to park near the toilets. I think Vic found it was less controversial than arguing with her every week.

Anyone who read the Market report last week will remember little 4 year old Elka. Well she certainly remembered me and called out hello as they passed our table. She seemed delighted to see me, so no lasting effects of being lost last week!

The little red dinosaur handed in two weeks ago remained our companion again for the morning and is still unclaimed

Someone from next week shift needs to buy some water, we are quite low.

David S, Bruce and Mez

Tables $85.00

Bags $97.00

Water $8.00

Total $190.00

OUR HISTORY

In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).

Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members.

Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store—the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm).

(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name ‘Jerraganda’ and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times.

We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our motto is,

“Doing Good and Having Fun”
