Strong foundation

7

Today Marel is a leading global provider merged from

many small locally oriented companies.

Clear drivers for companies in food processing

Global population exceeding 9 billion in 2050

Rising incomes, dietary and lifestyle changes

Limited natural resources

8

Over 50% increase in food demand by 2050

Today there are 1.8 billion active

consumers worldwide.

OECD estimates that active consumers

will be approx. 5 billion in 20-30 years.

Protein is one of the first things that

people invest in when they have rising

incomes.

The number of active consumers is growing

Today's business is not only about

increasing yield and capacity – and

it still plays a big role, also in terms

of sustainability.

Advanced equipment and systems

to reduce water usage and energy

consumption.

Increased emphasis on complete

traceability throughout the value

chain.

Sustainability is a core driver

x• Increasing efficiency

• Utilizing scarce resources

• Increasing food quality and safety

• Reducing waste

Enabling Marel’s customers to do

more with less by:

Increasing efficiency

Example: Sensor technology

– By including sensor technology in our

equipment we can better utilize the

products – e.g. vision systems for cut-

up of poultry or filleting of fish

Example: Line speeds

– By increasing line speeds in chicken

processing we are able to process more

birds per hour than ever before – hence

securing better utilization of the

production equipment.

– Currently we are at 15.000 birds per

hour and will increase to 18.000 birds

per hour in the next 12 months.

Utilizing scarce resources

Nose-to-tail thinking

– Meat by-products is a sought after protein in many other countries.

Livers, hearts, lungs, feet, tails etc.

– Large export to e.g. Russia from DK.

Example: Batching methods for by-products

Page 14: Jesper Hjortshøj, Marel

Increasing food quality and safety

Example: Hygienic design

– By incorporating the best

possible hygienic standards into

our designs we help reduce risk

of e.g. contamination with

pathogens such as Listeria or

Campylobacter.

Example: Traceability

– Links every step of the

production chain to ensure that

products can be traced back to

their source.

– Minimizes the size of recalls and

allows processors to produce

information to fulfill quality

certification requirements.

Reducing waste

Cooperation with packaging companies on so-called Intelligent

packaging.

– Longer shelf life means further reach of products and less waste.

– Sustainable bio-degradable packing materials to minimize environmental

impact.

Example: Oxygen presence in finished products.
