This event provided a wonderful opportunity for neighbors to meet each other and discover like interests and hobbies. Each person’s nametag listed their name and the street on which they live. President’s Corner As I am writing this, work is underway to improve the Jester signage at the Beauford and Lakewood entrances to our neighborhood. Jennifer Wood worked hard on this project and did a great job. Thanks Jennifer! Our adult social on May 1st was well attended and enjoyed by everyone. We had 3 lively planning sessions prior to the social and had tremendous ideas and creative input from this group. If you know any of these people please give them a personal “thank you” for spending their valuable time in contributing to our neighborhood. Thanks also to Alan Sonntag, Gary Johnson, and Billy Gouldie for helping before and during the event. Finally, I’d like to thank all who attended our social. Currently 2222CONA is involved in a fl urry of activity. Here are updates about TxDOT 2222 enhancements, news of a new housing development, the continued work on two large projects at the entrance to Jester and other commercial and residential developments along the 2222 corridor. Also, news of a training program for those residents asking to have access to the BCP properties surrounding us.Developments: Webb Estates - located on City Park Road just before Westminster Glen Drive, this 167 acre subdivision has a preliminary site plan for 76 homes. This parcel is located within the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone and the Drinking Water Protection Zone. CONA is working with the developer to infl uence the best possible outcome for all parties. Ladera Bend – nothing new to report. Hopefully many of our residents came to the 5/19 meeting with the project manager, Ryan Nelson, and were able to have their questions answered and concerns addressed. Vaught Ranch – this apartment project is being closely monitored by CONA. Our primary concern continues to be protection of West Bull Creek during the construction. We are in frequent meetings with the developers and their representatives. River Place Center – is still in preliminary design review with the City of Austin. Nothing new to report.

News From 2222CONABy Patricia Seeger

Colina Vista – this condominium project is in design phase. A plant rescue is scheduled for 5/26. Hopefully those interested in retrieving plants from this site were able to attend. We used the CONA email service to make the announcement as the date was set in early May. If you would like CONA notifi cations, send an email to [email protected] and you will receive future notifi cations. Other News TxDOT - CONA met with TxDOT to hear about proposed improvements to 2222 between Loop 360 and 620, including new interchanges. The TxDOT team presented four design scenarios, ranging from a modest widening with needed additional lanes to a full-blown 10-lane toll road. TxDOT focused on the two toll road options as the most viable solution. CONA convinced TxDOT to rethink what is necessary and desired for this area. TxDOT agreed to rethink the design and come back with other options. CONA is aligning with other organizations in the area committed to fi nding solutions to traffi c congestion outside of toll roads. As new information comes along, I will share it in this newsletter. BCP Access Permits and Training – Many Jester residents want access to the BCP lands close to our neighborhood. The City of Austin conducts permit training classes every January and February for

Jester EstatesJester Garage Sale A Big Success!

By Teresa Gouldie Traffi c was heavy in Jester on Saturday morning, May 5th, as many people visited our neighborhood to attend the Jester Garage Sale. Approximately 40 to 50 homeowners participated and the feedback was very positive. JHA is considering sponsoring a fall garage sale as well, most likely in October. We are gauging interest at this point, so please contact me at [email protected] or call 751-8000 if you’d like to participate. Many thanks go to Caroline McChrystal and Bonnie Francis of the social committee who were instrumental in getting the signs prepared for the entrances. Our initial thought was to post volunteers at each

entrance on Saturday morning to hand out maps, but Kathy Grober had the great idea of leaving the maps in brochure boxes attached to our signs. The

signs were put up Friday afternoon and left up throughout the event. Thanks Kathy – that was much more effi cient!

Please let me know about any interest in a fall garage sale.

News on the Networking Group The fi rst offi cial Networking Group meeting was held at Waterloo Icehouse on Monday, May 7th. Decisions were made about the structure of the group, and a system was designed for members to support each other by dispersing leads and referrals. The group decided to continue meeting for breakfast on the fi rst Monday of each month at 7:30 am at Waterloo Icehouse. Members and guests will pay a fl at fee of $10 each, which includes breakfast, a beverage, and gratuity. The members discussed adding another meeting (as the group grows), which will be held at lunch or dinner to accommodate the schedules of those who can’t attend breakfast meetings. It was decided that two members will be highlighted at each meeting. They will have the opportunity to give a presentation on their company/ service, answer questions, bring support materials, samples of their product, etc. Please contact Teresa at [email protected] or 751-8000 if you’d like more information or if you’d like to be a guest at one of the meetings.

Jester Estates NatureWatchby Jim and Lynne Weber

Nocturnal Neighbors Who are some of those denizens of the night, the wild creatures that inhabit the preserves that surround us, living most of their lives in the dark? Named for the nine bands that run across the armor plating on its back that give it protection & fl exibility, the nine-banded armadillo lives throughout most of the south central and southeastern US. It constructs burrows in loose soil and sometimes digs in lawns, fl ower beds, and under patios & decks in search of insects & other small invertebrates to eat. Mating occurs between July/August, but implantation is delayed until November, when a litter of four identical clones is delivered, their leathery skin pink until they mature to a grayish-brown. The nine-banded armadillo is the only armadillo that can “swim” – it can hold its breath as it walks across the bottom of fl owing streams! Recognized by its bandit mask and ringed tail, the raccoon is a widespread mammal but not often seen due to its nocturnal habits. It consumes a highly varied diet, is very intelligent & curious, and possesses a far greater manual dexterity than cats & dogs, enough to defeat any but the most determined defense of garbage cans or home gardens. Raccoons do not wash everything they eat, but they manipulate their food (appearing to wash it when water is available)

in order to tactually experience the object rather than actually clean it. They den above ground in tree cavities, chimneys & attics, underground in old burrows, storm sewers & crawl spaces, and mate March-June with 3-5 young in each litter. More often smelled than seen is the striped skunk, whose primary defense is a complex substance that includes sulfuric acid and can be “fi red” from either of two independently targetable anal glands. Skunks tend to stand & face a threat, usually giving a warning by stomping up & down on their front feet, rather than trying to escape. They may dig their own burrows or use hollow logs or wood/rock piles for dens, and give birth in May-June to anywhere from 3-10 young.Known to be native to and throughout the US, the grey fox is primarily nocturnal when living around humans. Lacking the white tip at the end of their tail like red foxes, grey foxes can vary greatly in color and are described as “cat-like”, due to the way they stalk their small prey. Being omnivores, they prefer to live in woodlands, and unlike the red fox, are capable of climbing trees (hence ‘Foxtree Cove’ in Jester Estates)! Using burrows and brush piles as dens, they give birth to 4 or 5 “kits” in March/April.

Jester Estates Having more teeth (50!) than any other North American mammal, the opossum is the only marsupial found north of Mexico. Their young are born in almost embryonic form, and make their way into a pouch where they are nourished and developed. Opossums live very short lives (only 3 years in the wild) with females living through only one breeding season and raising two litters with up to a dozen young in each. When confronted, they open their mouths to display their teeth, and may even hiss, but they’d rather not fi ght. The more we know about our nocturnal neighbors, the better we can learn how to coexist peacefully with them and share the same natural environment. For more information, please see Wild Neighbors: The Humane Approach to Living with Wildlife, an excellent reference book compiled by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

Save Energy, Report Streetlights Have you ever seen a streetlight burning in the middle of the day? That cost the City of Austin and you money. Remember, Austin Energy is a municipally owned utility. That means we own it. If you see such a light burning anywhere in the city, call (512) 505-7617 or email: [email protected]. Give either the pole number of the address of the nearest house or intersection. They will respond within 3-4 days. It will save all of us money as well as help the environment. Speaking of the environment, the City of Austin supports the “dark sky initiative”, www.darksky.org. This is an effort to save energy and reduce light pollution. If the streetlight near your house shines into your yard and is not the new shielded type that directs light only in a downward pattern, you can call Austin Energy and request that it be changed out with the newer less polluting type. Same number and email as above. Just give the pole number or your address. Shielded lights are less disturbing to wild life and to people. Help keep the Hill Country dark!

Jester Estates

An enthusiastic group of Jester residents meets every Monday to practice yoga at the dance studio in the Jester shopping center. The group has just started its second eight-week session. “Yoga” is a Sanskrit word and its verbal root, “yuj”, means “to yoke” or “to unite”. In a spiritual context, yoga strives to unite body, mind and soul. The various yoga postures compose a system of exercises practiced as part of this discipline to promote control of the body and mind. The focus of the Jester group’s practice is teaching and learning from one another yoga’s concepts of strength, fl exibility, balance and mental concentration. The practice involves a series of postures that fl ow together in a rhythmic movement. The practice starts with breath control, followed by a slow warm up and then various postures in standing, balancing, prone, sitting and supine positions. The sessions end with a full relaxation pose and a short meditation. Compared to other exercises, yoga postures are deliberate and slow, and can be either dynamic or static in movement. Postures are balanced on both the right and left side as well as forward and backward motions. The complete range of postures exercises and stretches all muscle groups. Yoga postures are mostly non-aerobic, non-impact and non-competitive and one feels relaxed as well as energized after the practice. If you would like to join, please contact Pama at [email protected].
