Conceived and created by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice as a double album, "Jesus Christ Superstar" achieved almost unprecedented sales around the world and inspired a series of concerts produced by Robert Stigwood in association with MCA, Inc. by arrangement with David Land that attracted capacity audiences across the country. As a stage show, it was produced on the New York, Los Angeles, London, Copenhagen, Paris, and Sydney stages and received international acclaim. But it is as a motion picture thatthe nearly unlimited potential of the score and concept has been most realized: "Jesus Christ Superstar" transcends the boundaries of both set and stage to become a statement of historical and contemporary significance. And now, once again, it is an album - the original soundtrack recording of the Norman Jewison film of Jesus Christ Superstar"

Intent upon interpreting the original music rather than the various stage productions, Norman Jewison took the motion picture company of "Jesus Christ Superstar" to Israel and filmed entirely on location, utilizing natural settings that added a stunning dimension to the music. The dramatic juxtaposition of the lay and the Biblical, the contemporary and the traditional - in the film, the soldiers carry a chilling assortment of ancient and modern weaponry; Jesus wears a simple white gown, but Judas is arrayed in an embroidered tunic -the real and the contrived has made the movie version of "Jesus Christ Superstar" unique unto itself.

Whatever the medium in which it is interpreted, the essence of "Jesus Christ Superstar" is the music - music that is poignant, dramatic, startling in its intensity, and timeless in its statement as conducted by Andre Previn. And now the visual translation of that score has added yet another dimension to a composition that is brilliant, innovative, sometimes controversial and always enduring.
