JESUS CHRIST: THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the

Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.” (John 1:51 NLT)

Jesus Christ is so many things to so many people. He is the Son of Man and the Son of God. He is the Saviour, the Redeemer, the Sacrificial Lamb, the Prince of Peace, etc. Of all His many attributes and qualifications, I am excited to discuss about the specific qualification which he gave about himself just as he started assembling his ministry team at the dawn of his ministry. This was captured in John 1:51 which the New Living Translation expounded that Jesus is the stairway between heaven and earth. This is a remarkable description of the Saviour of our souls, and we will pause here to ponder what this repre-sents in our lives.

Heaven is a place of great joy and rejoicing. The 24 elders are in perpetual worship of God. The streets of heaven are paved in gold. Death and pain and sickness are not there. This is the place Jesus came from and our Lord has gone back there to prepare a place for as many as live worthy of spending eternity with him there. On the other hand is earth: a place that Satan and his angels were cast into on rebellion in heaven. It is a temporary place – where all of us as sojourners are simply passing through. The earth is packed with such pain and such losses that it is difficult to contain it all. It is a stark contrast to the gran-deur and the beauty of heaven. Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:19 stated that: “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.” Living solely for the benefits of this earth alone is the most miserable experience of any man. There is no profit in achieving and fulfilling all here on earth and missing out on the eternal experience of heaven.

The above is a preface therefore to understanding the personality of Jesus as the Stairway to Heaven. Our Lord and Saviour has come to this world to offer us an escape route from the misery of this world and boldness to approach the throne room of God in glory. Jesus Christ testified himself as the bridge be-tween the heaven that God made for all his Sons and the squalor of this earth which belongs to the devil. To escape the earth, we must get on the ladder and climb unto God in heaven. We are not made to stay here forever on earth and suffer condemnation, loss and decay. Our place is heaven and as many as will get unto the ladder and climb the stairs to heaven, they will enjoy eternity with Jesus in joy, rejoicing and eternal worship of God the Maker.

There may be other impostors declaring that they are also stairways to heaven but we need not be de-ceived, there is only one stairway to heaven and this is Jesus Himself. Jesus definitively dealt with this confusion when he stated in John 14:6: “Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” All coming to God is through Jesus Christ and we must not allow other religions to confuse us in this. The stairway may look appealing and might even seem more authentic than Jesus, but the Word of God is settled and cannot be changed. Jesus Christ is our Stairway to Heaven, and anyone who must enjoy fellowship with the Father has to come to Jesus. As you read this, if you have not started on this stairway to heaven, it is not too late. Repent of your sins and accept Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour: that is the sole qualification that gets you on the stairway.
