MAN’S SEARCH VINITY FOR Dl- A Lecture Delivered by BENJAMIN F. LEE. Before the Mantua, Ohio, Association of Spiritualists. Flippancy is not argument, and insert* jus and profound subjects detracts from the dignity of the writer. I will prem- ise my thoughts by saying that this ques- tion, Who is Your God? is asked in all seriousness, and in a depth of candor I hope all may appreciate. As a young man. I had a profound veneration for the God of the church with which I was as- sociated. and walked lightly and some- times with dread while m the presence of our clergyman or the officers of the church, somehow conceiving the idea that they were in clbse relationship with God, an imaginary being, whom, at that time, I tried to love, but certainly feared. The silent whisperings in the chamber of my soul, and the solitary talks with mv own conscience, arraigned me as a criminal, and at times made me afraid of myself, although I had wronged no one. I believed that the only God of the universe presided over our church, and that within the course of time all other sects would be gathered within our folds. Broad vines, broad vines these, and the result of a liberal education. I am now trying to look with charity, and perhaps with respect, upon the religious convictions of other people, however ab- surd or reasonable the principles and forms of worship may be upon which those religious convictions may be grounded. A strong religious element is the most stubborn and dangerous 'of all elements that take possession of the human heart. Deep seated convictions of this charac- ter will not listen to argument, and yet when a question of dollars and cents arises, that question is ignored, leading us sometimes to question the aphorism, that the love of money is the root of aw evil. Cannot we safely say that honest religious convictions have caused some evil.- In the name of this religious con- viction mothers have mutilated-and de- stroyed their children; a father has planted the stake, bound two lovely daughters thereto, placed about their feet the fagots, applied the blazing torch, and amid their agonizing cries laughed and praised the Virgin that he could smother all parental and filial affection to crush heresy. The theologians in Longfellow's Tales of the Way-side Inn, relate the sad and horrid history of the old Spanish Hidalgo who burned at the stake his two daughters because they were tinctured with heresy. As direful as the conduct of this old Hidalgo may seem in cremating his two lovely daughters, while in the beauty, bloom and Innocence of youth, no less direful seems the effort on the part of the hob/ church and the holy bible to sanctify the filiacide, for upon discover- ing the heresy of his to daughters we take up the lines and read: - t “ Then to the grand Inquisitor once more The Hidalgo went, more eager than before, And said, *When Abraham offered up his son, Be clave the wood wherewith it might be done. In one respect I believe there have been no changes in man's God from the beginning until now. Evolution, that has so rattled everything human and divine, has not disturbed this principle. Man has always and continues to worship his highest conceptions of every quality to which he can attribute Godship. Minds of a superior mold at times get on a racket or frolic and plunge into the mud what has been their highest ideas of the Divine. Many of the Gods and Goddesses of the past have left the uni- verse. Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpo- mene. Terpsichore, Erato, Polhymnia. Urania, Calliope, daughters of the great Jupiter and Mnemosyme, were Godesses, and though but women, were worshiped as the muses of history, lyric poetry, sublime hymn, astronomy ana epic poetry. In these ideal beauties were centered all that was great and grand in tends in tho "direction of what may bo termed, for want of a better designation. Spiritual Pantheism, but Spiritual Pantheism is the very reverse of Materi- alism. Spiritual Pantheism is tho glori- ous conception that one infinite intelli- gence pervades all the universe." Is it not just as reasonable to say that Spirit- ual Pantheism is the glorious conception that many intelligences pervade tho uni- verse, ana that their combined intelli- gence is infinite because the perfect law of harmony prevails? Again Mr. Colville says: “Look where you will in a scientific direction, science affirms God.” Science affirms intelli- gence in every exposition of nature it unfolds. Lot each person determine whether there are one or many intelli- gences that do this Intelligent work. The analogies of nature as easily es- tablish two Gods as one, for however great the intelligence that wo arc ac- quainted with, that intelligence was the product of sex, and many of our highly inspired and clear-sighted Spiritualists invoke the Father God and the Mother God. I think I can anticipate the argu- ment in replication; and it would be something like this: unity of action, unity of cause and effects all point to one intelligence. The argument is strong, but not comprehensive enough to include every other thought upon the subject. The unity of action in a watch would point to the idea that one man made it. make the cogs, another JESUS. Philosopher and sage nave tried to sound thy depths, and astounded^ at the beauties and horrors thereof have] been led to say that it is an element of the human soul, and, reared in ignor- ance, may be the most dangerous of the human attributes: and, reared in the sun-light of intelligence, may become the most angelic. Is this the God of the holy church? Is this the God of the lob bible? Who is your God? A just and intelligent criticism is the balance that determines the value of fine gold. Is it right to criticise God? Is there any God known to man except that fashioned by man? A thought comes over mol hometimes that a man's God, that every man's God, is bis highest conception of intelligence and power coupled with ex- istence, and this thought will form the fundamental idea of this inquiry. I find it quite difficult to take the first step In my investigation without at once coming into contact with some religious form or worship established by man. Have not Ml religious systems been based upon the highest attributes the originators and supporters of these re- spective systems could conceive? These attributes have always been attached to a personality, and that person has been the mightiest in the universe. Whose God is greater than our God? Is not that the cVyof every religious sect in the world? 1 think it would be extremely amusing to see tho first God that was first worshiped by man. His conception of God, I presume, would be in keeping with his environments, with his educa- tion. I think it must have been made of mud. To bogln with tho beginning and follow down to the present time, were it possible, the various conceptions of a God " * ** " universe were embodied in these fantas- tic and dreamy Goddesses. Venus, Apollo, Boreas, Diana, Bacchus, and th e, great Zeus, and the hundred and one Gods and Goddesses of the Greeks, yes, and of other nations, were but the cen- tralizations of the culminating idealisms of the qualities which these different Gods ana Goddesses stood for. Who so grand in tragedy as Melpomene? Who so sweet in song and graceful in dance as Terpsichore? Who so lovely as Venus? Who so beautiful as Apollo? Who so powerful as Jove? Yet these were the creatures worshiped by the Greeks in the bright days of Pheidias, Aristides, Sophocles, ana a host of others whose lives we still love to contemplate. To me, there is something beautiful in this pantheistic idea of Supreme Intelli- gence, or a Supreme Intelligence presid- ing over each of the arts, sciences, at- tributes and principles. Distributing the various qualities of mind and matter that go to make men grand and good among many gods and goddesses, so that each shall preside over the highest of these respective qualities, 1s certainly not au- tocratic, ana is in the line of the tenden- cies of modern days; no pope, no king, but executives selected by the people for the people, embodying the highest ex- cellencies for each position. To me it is quite as consistent as to raise the gory |blade and shout, “ There is no Allah but Allah, and Mahommed 'is his prophet." Quite as consistent as for an infallible, born of woman, to issue the anathema of excommunication, consigning to eternal fires the pure and great souls who ac^ practically enabling men to select their own gods. Who to-day can say the Greeks were right? Who to-day can say the Greeks were wrong? Who to-day can define a Divinity and his attributes better than Pythagoras, Socrates or Plato? Who can say whether there is one God or many Gods; whether God is male or fe- male, personal or impersonal? A man with a pure heart, laudable desires, and high aspirations, on bended knee, supplicates his God for the pro- motion oi his political representative. On the other hand. a neighbor with heart just as pure, with desires as lauda- ble, and aspirations as high, humbly before his Adorable One prays, not only that another political representative may be promoted, but that confusion may attend the efforts of his neighbor. These different parties leave their homes, go forth to business; each has a reputation unimpeachable; the doors of the bank are open to both, the highest congratulate them in the street; in fact, they meet and congratulate each other. Why this apparent harmony in com- mercial circles, but before their Gods, this great variance, jarring, clashing of principles? Is there need of more than one God here? No one doubts that each [ one prays for what he considers tho best. It seems hardly possible that both Bhould be right, occupying such extreme iltions, maintain a most becoming unity of action. Notwithstanding the great variation, yes, antagonism, that may exist here among men of different professions and callings, yes, of the same professions and callings is it not possible for us to conceive of a time when all of these people of the same avocations, and of different avocations, shall work together in har- mony: when the lion and lamb shall lie down together; when all doctors of medicine shall agree in relation to their practice; when all the doctors of the law shall agree upon the principle of their science; when all the doctors of divinity shall preach the same God or Gods and the same code of ethics? And here there comes to me a beauti- ful thought, a spiritual thought, evolu- tionary in character; and it is this: That the most insignificant of God’s creatures become objects of adoration. When I think of this I do not wonder that the most Godlike here upon earth have such a charity for the poor, the despised, the erring. I apprehend that they sometimes see the heavenly spark, brilliant in its future beauty, while here covered with the grossness and vileness I of sin and ignominy. What I desire to get before you is this: that we may have the greatest unity of action while many different intelligences are bent upon the same or different purpose, ana it is based upon the evolu- tionary idea that the most debased here progress to beauty and wisdom beyond. That there will be a unification of all principles, attributes, qualities perfect and mind, to me seems m between mind quite rational. Impartialism implies equal advantage to all. Can a perfect God be unjust and K artial to any human being, since man is _]ere involuntarily, here in spite of him- self and in accordance with the laws of nature? Will the inequalities between men be reconciled? Will the innocent sufferer be compensated? Is it wise for us ty reconcile these strange anomalies? I think it is. Through modern Invention and modern thought we are obtaining wiser and clearer views of the forces that are working in and about us. I think Iwith a principle os to observe the law though tho Intelligent uuthor wore ab- sent. Well, this was the God of Thomas Paine whilo ho was on earth, and is now his God in spirit-life. It is a glorious oonception of a Divinity, a God way above a God made of mud and dirt, stone or iron, silver or gold, or any man-born God, whother Mlnerva-liko full panop- lied from the hoadof Jove, or Buddna-llke and Christ-like from the wombs of vir - gins touched by the Promethean spark from heaven. Tell me. can you, who is your God? Quality distinguishes quality. This may not be a primary postulate, but to a close observer of nature, I think it will become apparent. The grass gathers unto itself something that will make grass; the tree gathers unto itself something that will make tho tree; the horse gathers unto it- self something that makes the horse, and man gathers unto himself something that makes the man, and though they may try to make man from the monkey, they cannot, for a monkey cannot dis- tinguish the qualities in nature that makes the man. Stretch a line from hor- izon to horizon, and erect a million or more lines perpendicular thereto, and at the base of each of these perpendiculars1 place the first embryo of every living' animal that has come under the eye of man, and follow upon that perpendicular line the growth, perfection, decline and annihilation of a certain species of each embryo; notioe all the mutations caused by climate, food, environments, and though the changes in many of these em- bryonic forms and their growths may cause many of these lines to vary from a perpendicular, we have never yet found them to so vary as to cause one line to even touch another, much less to cross and run into and with it. At the bases of these perpendiculars are found the protoplastic moner and cytod, the mon- key and man, and although they may have been climbing these respective perpen- diculars for untold time, and reached a E ciint about ready to scale the heights of eaven, they are still moners, cytods. monkeys ana men. That quality distinguishes quality is a fact, ana the word distinguishes indi- cates intelligence, and how that intelli- gence .'gets there} i cannot say.- The pret - ty rose gathers Its sweet perfumes and its royal tints with an exactitude and an intelligence that surpasses man in his highest efforts. In the wilds of Arizona, upon the rugged rocks, and upon the heated hills ana plains of sand, thousands |of cacti in a thousand different forms raise their various leaves and beautiful blossoms in rich and glorious colors, and though no eye beholds (beauties “ Born to blush unseen and waste their sweet- ness on tho desert air ”), they quietly se- lect their qualities of form, color and fragrance, by a rule that operates with a precision unsurpassed by any intelligence of man. Cultivation and civilization does nut change their beauty, nor under these benign influences is the regularity of the selection of these qualities more certain. Our own American bob-a-link, with bright colors peculiar to itself, sailing over the golden grain in a hot noon-tide sun of July, warbles liquid notes of a sweetness and quality we all are charmed with and which we pleasantly distin- guish. In the conformation of its organs of song, and in its selections from the at- mosphere of the proper properties that combine into sweet melodies, force and quality have done rare work. Is not the God of each a being clothed with his highest conception of divine at- tributes? Is there anything in this to lead you to inquire, Who is your God? Do not let any one say I am a material- ist in the modern sense of that term, or tho limited sense of that term, for be- yond this gross matter I am somotimes {permitted to see a beauty and an ef- fulgence of an ethurcalized character, that glorifies tho soul, and creates long- ing desires to become pure, charitable and wise. Do not let any one say that I am an atheist, for I see about me on every hand tho manifestations of intelligent potencies that transcend the marshalled and unified efforts of humanity. Nothing in man so grand but that we find some- thing in nature grander. Nothing so powerful in man, that in nature wo find something more powerful, and this great- er grandness and greater power be- ing outside of ourselves, when wo have exhausted our own resources, how natu- ral to reach beyond ourselves; and in this supremo moment how wise it is to know In what direction to roach, in other wordB, how wise it is to determine who is your God! But to some, how horrid the thought! Is it more horrid than to divide a God into three parts, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost?and then any more inconsistent than to try and unite these three into one? Do not these perplexities make it incumbent upon you to enquire who is your God? Can life or intelligence exist independ- ent of matter? Is it necessary that they should exist independent of matter to form a proper conception of a God or Gods? In justification of a life of purity and usefulness against the villainous and un- charitable aspersions of the divinely con- , socrated servants of God, spirit Thomas Paine says through that princess of in- spirational orators, Mrs Cora L. V. Rich- mond: “ So far from being a materialist, the whole world was, ana is, animated by one divine and perfect law of the Su- preme Being; so far from being a materi- alist, every human life was held sacred os a portion from that Divine Giver, and now from tho Snlrlt-world, which is tho sacred reality of all existence: tho voico that addresses you is here to-night to de- clare that Bplrft is life, that lntelllgonoe is the source of all law." That “ intelligence," then, that Thomas Paine conceived to be “ the source of all law " must havo been and still is tho God {of Thomas Paine. Truly a Great God, and one that tho most intelligent of men could bow down to and worship with ad- oration if they could obtain as clear a conception of this Being as Thomas Paine. To separate this intelligence from mat- ter, or to separate tbe unuormation of a i law of nature from the matter it acts up- on, has been a source of great trouble to many wise and slnoore men, and has led thorn conscientiously to teach that in force and matter was tho intelligence, that their God was the material. The expansion of water, the running of water, tho falling of water, tho freezing! of water, the evaporation of water, the I floating of water, the thirst-quenching of water, tho flro-oxtlngnlsblngof water, are properties of water known to tho most ordinary Intellect, Tho scientist calls those properties laws, and to tho materialistic scientist, their uniformity of action, their Infallibility of operation do not clothe the laws with Intelligence, but claim that certain qualities inhere in water and nature, and would bo there if there woro no intelligence. To mo it is a grander thought, and listinguishes quality, is included in all force and matter in its operation and is infinite in its application. Here, to me, are the footprints of Divine Intelligences:! and here many contemplative souls who have grand conceptions of force and mat- ter find their God. What is your high- est conception of a God? Who is your {God? W nat oonception of a God does our peculiar philosophy give us? As familiar as we may have been with our friends who have passed among the Invisibles, have they aided us in obtaining a grand- er conception of a God than we had be- fore? What do they say to us? Their sayings are various. They have told us that God was a principle. Wo have en- quired what kind of a principle. The answer came a principle of goodness. But what aro wo going to do with the principle of badness? Another spirit tells us that God is in everything; another that tho God of tbe Jews is tne Jehovah of the universe; another that Christ is God another that there is no God and so on Tell me why this confusion from that Islde of life? As Spiritualists we under stand this, and believe, os a man think eth so is he, and for a while so will he be. The law of thought fixes a habit up- on the soul that it transports to spirit- life. All there is of the soul, mind or spirit in spirit-life is tho result of thought process on this side. There the opportunities to improve that oonooption, or to study the laws of nature, may bo more advantage- ous. Simply, they dug them. And the birds of the air, instead of flying over the country und telling how destitute they were, made themselves nests. If Jesus had not taught to “ take no thought of the morrow,” had not carried out his teachings in practice; but had gone to work like an industrious carpenter, and made himself a home, he would have had where to lay his head. It was his false notions of life, and his gross turbu- lence that made him so wretched, and finally brought him to the cross. “ Lay not up treasures on earth,” may do for the preacher who subsists on the toil of oth- ers, gaining his food and raiment, and a place for hut worthless head, by telling of the joys in store for the good, and of the miseries of the damned, In regard to all of which ho has no more knowledge than the most ignorant clod-hopper. Resist not evil,” said Jesus, whicn the assassin, clutching his victim’s throat, repeats. He who is only clothed in rags may well instruct his followers who are equal- destitute, to give to those who take their coats their cloaks also. “ Ask and e shall receive,” is the beggar's text. The lilies of the field, how they grow; they toll not, neither do they spin; yet I say unto you, that even Solomon m all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." The deduction is clear. Neither should you, my followers, toil nor spin, Bor God will clothe you. “ The birds . . ■ . sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heaven- futher feedeth them. Ye are of more value than they." So God will feed you, and you may waste your time in idleness, and in roving about the country, ana when you want to ride, and can find “ an| ass tied and a colt with her, loose them, and bring them to me.” Born outside of wedlock, a hybrid according to Chris- tian representation, part God, part man, an impossible cross, yet this nullius Jxllius is represented to the world as a model for imitation,—an ideal man. Such were the writer's reflections the other day, after an hour’s pleasant con- ersation with a clergyman of great ability, who had just read our R e- searches in Oriental History, and who remarked: “ I admit the evidence is not very con- incing that there was a real Jesus; but his character, as given us in the Gos- pels, is worthy of emulation. Man is so constituted he needs something for a model, even if it is an ideal one; and Je- sus, as he is described by his biogra- phers, is a type of all that is noble in hu- manity. His Sermon on the Mount, even if a compilation, as you think, of Thera- peutian monks, in Egypt, elevates him :ar above anything human of which we have knowledge. If no such character al- ready existed, it would be desirable to set him up, even at this late day for uni- ~ersal guidance.” It is possible the learned divine had not recently read that sermon he so highly extolled, divested of the preju- dices of early education. Universally observed and the world would be a lazar- house of woe. The few people remain- ing in it would be eunuchs, or mendi- cants. All the forces of nature would be left in their primal condition. Cities would not be built, states would not be organized, fields would remain unculti- nted. No ships would plow the ocean. There would be no commerce, no law, no government. The wheels of industry would remain forever silent. The plow, the loom, the anvil would be unknown. Books would not be written, and man’ would retain his native wlldnpss and ig- norance, relying for food, raiment and shelter on his “ heavenly father who olothes the lilies and feeds the ravens.”* Indeed, no more worthless character has ever been presented for man's con- templation than this ideal hero. All the good things ascribed to him are as old as civilization, and can be traced back to timos antedating the pretended birth of this Nazarene.T There aro a few things that seem original, such as “ let him who is able to endure being made a eunuch become such." His blessings on the peacemakers are meaningless plati- tudes when taken in connection with his own declarations, as given in Matthew 10:34, 35: “ I came not to send peaoe,butasword. For I am oome to sot a man at variance against his father, and tho daughter against her mother, and tho daugnter- in-luw against her mothor-in-law." Even worse than this: “ If any man comes to me and hates not his father, and mother, and wife and or division.” Luke 12:51. his conduct in consorting with magda- I That is the kind of a peacemaker this lenes; in boasting that harlots believed f" ideal Jesus was. But it is alalmed he on him; in telling the elders and chief did not mean exactly what he said. Why priests that “ tbe harlots will go into the did ho say these things, then? Is he an ideal teacher who discourses in parables that those “ seeingmay not see, und hearing may not understand?” Luke 8: 10. As a prophet of evil, and a promoter of strife he was a grand success. The world has been filled with discord, vio- lence and death ever slnoe because of his terrible teachings. Is this the ideal character the world needs to improve its morals, to elevate tho humble, and to fit all for a higher life? Like a petulant, ill-bred ohild, when hungered, he found a fig tree barren of fruit, out of season: he cursed it, and was so virulent in his anathemas as to cause the leaves of the tree to wither in his presence, and, finally, to waste at the roots. See Matt. 21:19; Mark 11:18, 14, 20, 21. Common scolds were punished in a sterner age than this with the ducking stool by our English ancestors. What punishment did he deserve whose curses withered fig trees, and blasted them at the root? “ Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or brethren, or children, for your families as your pious ancestors had for theirs, who marked this whole story “ Not to be read!” “ Except ye eat the flesh of the son of man, ana drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso oateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life. . . . My flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eatetn my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwell- etn in me, and I in him.” John 6:53 to 66. When Jesus’ disciples heard this, they said, v. 60. “ This is a hard saying; who can hear it?” Verse 66: “ From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him." These disciples loved their master: | but they were not cannibals! They were unwilling to eat his flesh, and drink his | blood! It was a good) sanitary measure, and more valuable be- cause of the fact that frequently they] ate from a common dish, using their fingers where we now use knives, forks ana spoons. The Pharisees, who were very strict in their habits, noticed that the followers of Jesus did not observe this cleanly habit, and inquired of the master why they neglected its observance. See Mark 7:1 to 13.1 Instead of reply- ing in a gentlemanly manner, he said. “ Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites,’ and then discoursed on subjects quite foreign to the inquiry. The “ Lord’l himself being invited to dine with i Pharisee, neglected to follow the pro vailing custom, at which the host “ mar- veled, as well he might. Jesus ref sponded: “ Ye Pharisees make clean! the outside of the cup and platter, but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness,” and then he called them “ fools.” See Luke 11:37 to 44, conclud- ing with his usual expletives: “ Woe unto you scribes, and Pharisees, and hy- pocrites,” which seem to be stock terms with him on all important occasions. Addressing the chief priest and elders Jesus told them that publicans and har- lots believed in him, and that these would enter tbe kingdom of Heaven in advance of them. See Matt. 21:31. This was no doubt designed as a compliment for the magdalenes; but was it not a needless in- sult to the priests and elders? The story of the woman taken in adul- tery. and brought before Jesus by the Scribes and Pharisees, as if he was a po- lice judge, has been made to appear by a Talmage as an act worthy a God! The ovidenoe of the woman's guilt was posi- tive. Under Jewish law ner punishment was stoning to death; she had broken one of the ten commandments. But this solf-appointed judge, and ideal Jesus, re gardless of legal requirements, told this adulteress arraigned before him: “ Nei- ther do I condemn thee!" John 8:11. This action was followed in almost the next breath with: “ I am tho light of the world!" This law given to Moses on Mt. Sinai, by God himself, amid tbo lightnings of Omnipotence, as religion- ists want us to understand, was here, practically, annulled. The offense is punished to-day, in all civilized coun- tries, as a misdemeanor. Do the ideal- ists approve of this action of the Master? If one law can be set aside with a wave of the hand, without any extenuating circumstances, may not all laws be treat- ed in tho same manner, merely, “ Go and sin no more,” not even exacting a promise of future good behavior? Jesus overthrew the tables of tbe money changers, poured their gold and silver on the ground, and scourged the bankers from the temple. See John 2: 14, 15. Dr. Adam Clarke, commenting: on the parallel passage in Matt. 21: 13, says: “ A very pious clergymen of my ac- quaintance, observing a woman keeping a public stand to sell nuts, gingerbread, etc., at the very porch of the church, on the Lord's day,’’ requested her to re- move. She persisted in the practice. “ Finding her still in the very entrance with her stall, he overthrew the stall, and scattered the stuff in the street.” The Doctor concludes: “ He was shortly after summoned to appear before the Royal Court . . . wnich condemned the action, and fined the man in a con- siderable sum of money.” Here the ideal Jesus set himself up as law-maker, assuming the role of judge, jury, witnesses and executioner, all in the same breath. Had he been guilty of a similar illegal and ill-advised act in modern times he would, probably, have received a broken head; and the verdict of any competent Court would have been: Served him right. Is morality cop- served, or the world bettered for having an ideal disturber of the peaca and a law-breaker to lead in acts of violence? Such Jesus certainly was, else his biog- raphers falsified in tneir narration of the event. Jesus threatened to punish in “ Hell- fire, ” according to the authorized version, for calling a brother a fool, Matt. 5: 22; but he repeatedly applied the same epi- thet to his listeners, Matt. 23:17, 19, and soon after, in the same speech, denounced the multitude as serpents, as hypocrites, as vipers; and, verse 33, threatened them again with hell. No teacner was ever more abusive in language tnan this ideal Jesus. Seven times in one short dis- course, reported In Matthew 23, he denounced his listeners as hypocrites, and pronounced a woe upon them. Such bitter invective may become a mythical God; but he who oopies this ideal in our day will probably experience a great woe, and possibly passthrough a “ tribu- lation of anguish,” such as those are liable to feel who attempt to address an angry mob, while ail the assembled multitude “ lift up their voices,” and, perhaps, “ smite him on the cheek.” A riper is the most poisonous of the snake family, and yet, Matt. 3: 7, says {this Jesus addressed those who were present at his baptism as “ a generation of vipers.” This term was applied quite frequently to the Jews. See Matt. 12: [34; 23: 33, etc. Is it well to hare an ideal dealer in billingsgate for our sons tnd daughters to copy after? “□“ It is easier for a camel to go through Itho eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter tho kingdom of God.” Mark 10: 25. The conclusion follows in the ideaTs own words: “ Sell whatever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shall have treasure in heaven.” Luke 12:33. That is: Because vagabonds can subsist by beggary, you should take no thought of the morrow. Observe this and you will be happy. From the quoted and other sayings of Jesus riches seemed to him criminal, while poverty was a virtue, and heaven was the home of babies, those who imi- tate them, and mendicants. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus is In point: The latter was given rest in Abraham's bosom, not for his good deeds, but be- cause he was a beggar. Flippancy is not argument, and insert* jus and profound subjects detracts from the dignity of the writer. I will prem­ise my thoughts by saying that this ques­tion, Who is Your God? is asked in all seriousness, and in a depth of candor I hope all may appreciate. As a young man. I had a profound veneration for the God of the church with which I was as­sociated. and walked lightly and some­times with dread while m the presence of our clergyman or the officers of the church, somehow conceiving the idea that they were in clbse relationship with God, an imaginary being, whom, at that time, I tried to love, but certainly feared. The silent whisperings in the chamber of my soul, and the solitary talks with mv own conscience, arraigned me as a criminal, and at times made me afraid of myself, although I had wronged no one.

I believed that the only God of the universe presided over our church, and that within the course of time all other sects would be gathered within our folds. Broad vines, broad vines these, and the result of a liberal education. I am now trying to look with charity, and perhaps with respect, upon the religious convictions of other people, however ab­surd or reasonable the principles and forms of worship may be upon which those religious convictions may be grounded.

A strong religious element is the most stubborn and dangerous 'of all elements that take possession of the human heart. Deep seated convictions of this charac­ter will not listen to argument, and yet when a question of dollars and cents arises, that question is ignored, leading us sometimes to question the aphorism, that the love of money is the root of aw evil. Cannot we safely say that honest religious convictions have caused some evil.- In the name of this religious con­viction mothers have mutilated-and de­stroyed their children; a father has planted the stake, bound two lovely daughters thereto, placed about their feet the fagots, applied the blazing torch, and amid their agonizing cries laughed and praised the Virgin that he could smother all parental and filial affection to crush heresy. The theologians in Longfellow's Tales of the Way-side Inn, relate the sad and horrid history of the old Spanish Hidalgo who burned at the stake his two daughters because they were tinctured with heresy.

As direful as the conduct of this old Hidalgo may seem in cremating his two lovely daughters, while in the beauty, bloom and Innocence of youth, no less direful seems the effort on the part of the hob/ church and the holy bible to sanctify the filiacide, for upon discover­ing the heresy of his to daughters we take up the lines and read: -

In one respect I believe there have been no changes in man's God from the beginning until now. Evolution, that has so rattled everything human and divine, has not disturbed this principle. Man has always and continues to worship his highest conceptions of every quality to which he can attribute Godship. Minds of a superior mold at times get on a racket or frolic and plunge into the mud what has been their highest ideas of the Divine. Many of the Gods and Goddesses of the past have left the uni­verse. Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpo­mene. Terpsichore, Erato, Polhymnia. Urania, Calliope, daughters of the great Jupiter and Mnemosyme, were Godesses, and though but women, were worshiped as the muses of history, lyric poetry, sublime hymn, astronomy ana epic poetry. In these ideal beauties were centered all that was great and grand in

Spiritual Pantheism is tho glori­ous conception that one infinite intelli­gence pervades all the universe." Is it not just as reasonable to say that Spirit­ual Pantheism is the glorious conception that many intelligences pervade tho uni­verse, ana that their combined intelli­gence is infinite because the perfect law of harmony prevails?

Again Mr. Colville says: “Look where you will in a scientific direction, science affirms God.” Science affirms intelli­gence in every exposition of nature it unfolds. Lot each person determine whether there are one or many intelli­gences that do this Intelligent work. The analogies of nature as easily es­tablish two Gods as one, for however great the intelligence that wo arc ac­quainted with, that intelligence was the product of sex, and many of our highly inspired and clear-sighted Spiritualists invoke the Father God and the Mother God. I think I can anticipate the argu­ment in replication; and it would be something like this: unity of action, unity of cause and effects all point to one intelligence. The argument is strong, but not comprehensive enough to include every other thought upon the subject. The unity of action in a watch would point to the idea that one man made it.

Philosopher and sage nave tried to sound thy depths, and astounded^ at the beauties and horrors thereof have] been led to say that it is an element of the human soul, and, reared in ignor­ance, may be the most dangerous of the human attributes: and, reared in the sun-light of intelligence, may become the most angelic. Is this the God of the holy church? Is this the God of the lo b bible? Who is your God? A just and intelligent criticism is the balance that determines the value of fine gold.Is it right to criticise God? Is there any God known to man except that fashioned by man? A thought comes over mol home times that a man's God, that every man's God, is bis highest conception of intelligence and power coupled with ex­istence, and this thought will form the fundamental idea of this inquiry.

I find it quite difficult to take the first step In my investigation without at once coming into contact with some religious form or worship established by man. Have not Ml religious systems been based upon the highest attributes the originators and supporters of these re­spective systems could conceive? These attributes have always been attached to a personality, and that person has been the mightiest in the universe. Whose God is greater than our God? Is not that the cVy of every religious sect in the world?

I think it must have been made of mud. To bogln with tho beginning and follow down to the present time, were it possible, the various conceptions of a God " * ** "

universe were embodied in these fantas­tic and dreamy Goddesses. Venus, Apollo, Boreas, Diana, Bacchus, and th e , great Zeus, and the hundred and one Gods and Goddesses of the Greeks, yes, and of other nations, were but the cen­tralizations of the culminating idealisms of the qualities which these different Gods ana Goddesses stood for. Who so grand in tragedy as Melpomene? Who so sweet in song and graceful in dance as Terpsichore? Who so lovely as Venus? Who so beautiful as Apollo? Who so powerful as Jove? Yet these were the creatures worshiped by the Greeks in the bright days of Pheidias, Aristides, Sophocles, ana a host of others whose lives we still love to contemplate.

To me, there is something beautiful in this pantheistic idea of Supreme Intelli­gence, or a Supreme Intelligence presid­ing over each of the arts, sciences, at­tributes and principles. Distributing the various qualities of mind and matter that go to make men grand and good among many gods and goddesses, so that each shall preside over the highest of these respective qualities, 1s certainly not au­tocratic, ana is in the line of the tenden­cies of modern days; no pope, no king, but executives selected by the people for the people, embodying the highest ex­cellencies for each position. To me it is quite as consistent as to raise the gory |blade and shout, “ There is no Allah but Allah, and Mahommed 'is his prophet." Quite as consistent as for an infallible, born of woman, to issue the anathema of excommunication, consigning to eternal fires the pure and great souls who ac^ practically enabling men to select their own gods.

Who to-day can say the Greeks were right? Who to-day can say the Greeks were wrong? Who to-day can define a Divinity and his attributes better than Pythagoras, Socrates or Plato? Who can say whether there is one God or many Gods; whether God is male or fe­male, personal or impersonal?

A man with a pure heart, laudable desires, and high aspirations, on bended knee, supplicates his God for the pro­motion oi his political representative. On the other hand. a neighbor with heart just as pure, with desires as lauda­ble, and aspirations as high, humbly before his Adorable One prays, not only that another political representative may be promoted, but that confusion may attend the efforts of his neighbor. These different parties leave their homes, go forth to business; each has a reputation unimpeachable; the doors of the bank are open to both, the highest congratulate them in the street; in fact, they meet and congratulate each other. Why this apparent harmony in com­mercial circles, but before their Gods, this great variance, jarring, clashing of principles? Is there need of more than one God here? No one doubts that each

Notwithstanding the great variation, yes, antagonism, that may exist here among men of different professions and callings, yes, of the same professions and callings is it not possible for us to conceive of a time when all of these people of the same avocations, and of different avocations, shall work together in har­mony: when the lion and lamb shall lie down together; when all doctors of medicine shall agree in relation to their practice; when all the doctors of the law shall agree upon the principle of their science; when all the doctors of divinity shall preach the same God or Gods and the same code of ethics?

And here there comes to me a beauti­ful thought, a spiritual thought, evolu­tionary in character; and it is this: That the most insignificant of God’s creatures become objects of adoration. When I think of this I do not wonder that the most Godlike here upon earth have such a charity for the poor, the despised, the erring. I apprehend that they sometimes see the heavenly spark, brilliant in its future beauty, while here covered with the grossness and vileness I of sin and ignominy.

W hat I desire to get before you is this: that we may have the greatest unity of action while many different intelligences are bent upon the same or different purpose, ana it is based upon the evolu­tionary idea that the most debased here progress to beauty and wisdom beyond. That there will be a unification of all principles, attributes, qualities perfect

and mind, to me seemsmbetween mind quite rational.

Impartial ism implies equal advantage to all. Can a perfect God be unjust andKartial to any human being, since man is

_]ere involuntarily, here in spite of him­self and in accordance with the laws of nature? Will the inequalities between men be reconciled? Will the innocent sufferer be compensated? Is it wise for us ty reconcile these strange anomalies? I think it is. Through modern Invention and modern thought we are obtaining wiser and clearer views of the forces that are working in and about us. I think

Well, this was the God of Thomas Paine whilo ho was on earth, and is now his God in spirit-life. It is a glorious oonception of a Divinity, a God way above a God made of mud and dirt, stone or iron, silver or gold, or any man-born God, whother Mlnerva-liko full panop­lied from the hoadof Jove, or Buddna-llke and Christ-like from the wombs of vir­gins touched by the Promethean spark from heaven.

Tell me. can you, who is your God?Quality distinguishes quality. This may

not be a primary postulate, but to a close observer of nature, I think it will become apparent. The grass gathers unto itself something that will make grass; the tree gathers unto itself something that will make tho tree; the horse gathers unto it­self something that makes the horse, and man gathers unto himself something that makes the man, and though they may try to make man from the monkey, they cannot, for a monkey cannot dis­tinguish the qualities in nature that makes the man. That quality distinguishes quality is a fact, ana the word distinguishes indi­cates intelligence, and how that intelli­gence .'gets there} i cannot say.- The pret­ty rose gathers Its sweet perfumes and its royal tints with an exactitude and an intelligence that surpasses man in his highest efforts. In the wilds of Arizona, upon the rugged rocks, and upon the heated hills ana plains of sand, thousands | of cacti in a thousand different forms raise their various leaves and beautiful blossoms in rich and glorious colors, and though no eye beholds (beauties “ Born to blush unseen and waste their sweet­ness on tho desert a ir ”), they quietly se­lect their qualities of form, color and fragrance, by a rule that operates with a precision unsurpassed by any intelligence of man. Cultivation and civilization does nut change their beauty, nor under these benign influences is the regularity of the selection of these qualities more certain. Our own American bob-a-link, with bright colors peculiar to itself, sailing over the golden grain in a hot noon-tide sun of July, warbles liquid notes of a sweetness and quality we all are charmed with and which we pleasantly distin­guish. In the conformation of its organs of song, and in its selections from the a t­mosphere of the proper properties that combine into sweet melodies, force and quality have done rare work. Can life or intelligence exist independ­ent of matter? Is it necessary that they should exist independent of matter to form a proper conception of a God or Gods?

That “ intelligence," then, that Thomas Paine conceived to be “ the source of all law " must havo been and still is tho God {of Thomas Paine. Truly a Great God, and one that tho most intelligent of men could bow down to and worship with ad­oration if they could obtain as clear a conception of this Being as Thomas Paine.

To separate this intelligence from mat­ter, or to separate tbe unuormation of a

i law of nature from the matter it acts up­on, has been a source of great trouble to many wise and slnoore men, and has led thorn conscientiously to teach that in force and matter was tho intelligence, that their God was the material.

The expansion of water, the running of water, tho falling of water, tho freezing! of water, the evaporation of water, the I floating of water, the thirst-quenching of water, tho flro-oxtlngnlsblngof water, are properties of water known to tho most ordinary Intellect, Tho scientist calls those properties laws, and to tho materialistic scientist, their uniformity of action, their Infallibility of operation do not clothe the laws with Intelligence, but claim that certain qualities inhere in water and nature, and would bo there if there woro no intelligence.

To mo it is a grander thought, and

listinguishes quality, is included in all force and matter in its operation and is infinite in its application. Here, to me, are the footprints of Divine Intelligences:! and here many contemplative souls who have grand conceptions of force and mat­ter find their God. W hat is your high­est conception of a God? Who is your {God? W nat oonception of a God does our peculiar philosophy give us? As familiar as we may have been with our friends who have passed among the Invisibles, have they aided us in obtaining a grand­er conception of a God than we had be­fore? W hat do they say to us? Their sayings are various. They have told us that God was a principle. Wo have en­quired what kind of a principle. The answer came a principle of goodness. But what aro wo going to do with the principle of badness? Another spirit tells us that God is in everything; another that tho God of tbe Jews is tne Jehovah of the universe; another tha t Christ is God another that there is no God and so on Tell me why this confusion from that

How came the foxes to have holes? Simply, they dug them. And the birds of the air, instead of flying over the country und telling how destitute they were, made themselves nests. If Jesus had not taught to “ take no thought of the morrow,” had not carried out his teachings in practice; but had gone to work like an industrious carpenter, and made himself a home, he would have had where to lay his head. I t was his false notions of life, and his gross turbu­lence that made him so wretched, and finally brought him to the cross. “ Lay not up treasures on earth ,” may do for the preacher who subsists on the toil of oth­ers, gaining his food and raiment, and a place for hut worthless head, by telling of the joys in store for the good, and of the miseries of the damned, In regard to all of which ho has no more knowledge than the most ignorant clod-hopper.

Resist not evil,” said Jesus, whicn the assassin, clutching his victim’s throat, repeats.

He who is only clothed in rags may well instruct his followers who are equal-

So God will feed you, and you may waste your time in idleness, and in roving about the country, ana when you want to ride, and can find “ an| ass tied and a colt with her, loose them, and bring them to me.” Born outside of wedlock, a hybrid according to Chris­tian representation, part God, part man, an impossible cross, yet this nullius Jxllius is represented to the world as a model for imitation,—an ideal man.

Such were the w riter's reflections the other day, after an hour’s pleasant con-

ersation with a clergyman of great ability, who had just read our R e­searches in Oriental History, and who remarked:

“ I admit the evidence is not very con- incing tha t there was a real Jesus; but

his character, as given us in the Gos­pels, is worthy of emulation. Man is so constituted he needs something for a model, even if it is an ideal one; and Je­sus, as he is described by his biogra­phers, is a type of all tha t is noble in hu­manity. His Sermon on the Mount, even if a compilation, as you think, of Thera- peutian monks, in Egypt, elevates him : a r above anything human of which we have knowledge. If no such character al­ready existed, it would be desirable to set him up, even a t this late day for uni- ~ersal guidance.”

I t is possible the learned divine had not recently read tha t sermon he so highly extolled, divested of the preju­dices of early education. Universally observed and the world would be a lazar- house of woe. The few people remain­ing in it would be eunuchs, or mendi­cants. All the forces of nature would be left in their primal condition. Cities would not be built, states would not be organized, fields would remain unculti­nted. No ships would plow the ocean.

There would be no commerce, no law, no government. The wheels of industry would remain forever silent. The plow, the loom, the anvil would be unknown. Books would not be written, and man’ would retain his native wlldnpss and ig­norance, relying for food, raiment and shelter on his “ heavenly father who olothes the lilies and feeds the ravens.”*

Indeed, no more worthless character has ever been presented for man's con­templation than this ideal hero. All the good things ascribed to him are as old as civilization, and can be traced back to timos antedating the pretended birth of this Nazarene.T There aro a few things that seem original, such as “ let him who is able to endure being made a eunuch become such." His blessings on the peacemakers are meaningless plati­tudes when taken in connection with his own declarations, as given in Matthew 10:34, 35:

“ I came not to send peaoe,butasword. For I am oome to sot a man at variance against his father, and tho daughter against her mother, and tho daugnter- in-luw against her mothor-in-law."

Even worse than this:“ If any man comes to me and hates

not his father, and mother, and wife and

As a prophet of evil, and a promoter of strife he was a grand success. The world has been filled with discord, vio­lence and death ever slnoe because of his terrible teachings. Is this the ideal character the world needs to improve its morals, to elevate tho humble, and to fit all for a higher life?

Like a petulant, ill-bred ohild, when hungered, he found a fig tree barren of fruit, out of season: he cursed it, and was so virulent in his anathemas as to cause the leaves of the tree to wither in his presence, and, finally, to waste a t the roots. See Matt. 21:19; Mark 11:18, 14, 20, 21.

Common scolds were punished in a sterner age than this with the ducking stool by our English ancestors. What punishment did he deserve whose curses withered fig trees, and blasted them at the root?

“ Every one tha t hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or brethren, or children,

for your families as your pious ancestors had for theirs, who marked this whole story “ Not to be read!”

“ Except ye eat the flesh of the son of man, ana drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso oateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life. .

. . My flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eatetn my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwell- etn in me, and I in him.” John 6:53 to 66.

When Jesus’ disciples heard this, they said, v. 60.

“ This is a hard saying; who can hear it?” Verse 66: “ From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him."

These disciples loved their master: | but they were not cannibals! They were unwilling to eat his flesh, and drink his

| blood! The Mosaic law prohibited their eating the flesh of swine, and drinking

or lands, for my name's sake, shall re- the blood of any animal; but in the newceive an hundred fold, and shall everlasting life.”—Matt. 19:29.

While attending a wedding at Cana, where the wine ran short on the third day's revel.t the mother of Jesus, who was present, told him of the fact. He turned to her in an insolent manner and said: “ Woman, what have I to do with thee?” No doubt “ our Lord's” mind

On several occasions “ our Lord” seemed very ambitious to know what the people thought of him. “ Who do men say I am?" “ Who do you say I am?” See Matt. 16: 13, 15; Luke 9:19, 20. This action exhibits a vain mind in

The Women’s Christian Temperance Union are making a terrible ado over the malting of beer containing only about one-half as much alcohol as good wine, such as Jesus made on an occasion when drunkenness was almost universal among the guests.

A custom as old as the Jews prevailed among them, requiring persons to wash their hands before eating. I t was a good) sanitary measure, and more valuable be­cause of the fact tha t frequently they] ate from a common dish, using their fingers where we now use knives, forks ana spoons. The Pharisees, who were very strict in their habits, noticed that the followers of Jesus did not observe this cleanly habit, and inquired of the master why they neglected its observance. See Mark 7:1 to 13.1 Instead of reply­ing in a gentlemanly manner, he said. “ Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites,’ and then discoursed on subjects quite foreign to the inquiry. The “ Lord’l himself being invited to dine with i Pharisee, neglected to follow the pro vailing custom, at which the host “ mar­veled, as well he might. Jesus ref sponded: “ Ye Pharisees make clean! the outside of the cup and platter, but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness,” and then he called them “ fools.” See Luke 11:37 to 44, conclud­ing with his usual expletives: “ Woe unto you scribes, and Pharisees, and hy­pocrites,” which seem to be stock terms with him on all important occasions.

Addressing the chief priest and elders Jesus told them th a t publicans and har­lots believed in him, and that these would enter tbe kingdom of Heaven in advance of them. See Matt. 21:31. This was no doubt designed as a compliment for the magdalenes; but was it not a needless in­sult to the priests and elders?

The story of the woman taken in adul­tery. and brought before Jesus by the Scribes and Pharisees, as if he was a po­lice judge, has been made to appear by a Talmage as an act worthy a God! The ovidenoe of the woman's guilt was posi­tive. Under Jewish law ner punishment was stoning to death; she had broken one of the ten commandments. But this solf-appointed judge, and ideal Jesus, re gardless of legal requirements, told this adulteress arraigned before him: “ Nei­ther do I condemn thee!" John 8:11. This action was followed in almost the next breath with: “ I am tho light of the world!" This law given to Moses on Mt. Sinai, by God himself, amid tbo lightnings of Omnipotence, as religion­ists want us to understand, was here, practically, annulled. The offense is punished to-day, in all civilized coun­tries, as a misdemeanor. Do the ideal­ists approve of this action of the Master? If one law can be set aside with a wave of the hand, without any extenuating circumstances, may not all laws be treat­ed in tho same manner, merely, “ Go and sin no more,” not even exacting a promise of future good behavior? Now It is only the olergy who expect to bo lot off thus easily. It'ls just to state, so strongly does this story savor of free- lovelsm, many eminent Christian schol­ars have repudiated it as an interpola­tion in the “ Divine Word.” Even Dr. Adam Clarke, says: “ I must confess tbe evidence in its favor does not appear

By having an imperfect ideal to pat­tern after will not the race fall very far short of its capabilities, just as the arrow aimed at-some near- object fails greatly short of the distance i t would have reached if directed to the sun?

Jesus overthrew the tables of tbe money changers, poured their gold and silver on the ground, and scourged the bankers from the temple. See John 2: 14, 15. Dr. Adam Clarke, commenting: on the parallel passage in Matt. 21: 13, says:

“ A very pious clergymen of my ac­quaintance, observing a woman keeping a public stand to sell nuts, gingerbread, etc., a t the very porch of the church, on the Lord's day,’’ requested her to re­move. She persisted in the practice. “ Finding her still in the very entrance with her stall, he overthrew the stall, and scattered the stuff in the street.” The Doctor concludes: “ He was shortly after summoned to appear before the Royal Court . . . wnich condemned the action, and fined the man in a con­siderable sum of money.”

Here the ideal Jesus set himself up as law-maker, assuming the role of judge, jury, witnesses and executioner, all in the same breath. Had he been guilty of a similar illegal and ill-advised act in modern times he would, probably, have received a broken head; and the verdict of any competent Court would have been: Served him right. Is morality cop- served, or the world bettered for having an ideal disturber of the peaca and a law-breaker to lead in acts of violence? Such Jesus certainly was, else his biog­raphers falsified in tneir narration of the event.

Jesus threatened to punish in “ Hell- fire, ” according to the authorized version, for calling a brother a fool, Matt. 5: 22; but he repeatedly applied the same epi­thet to his listeners, Matt. 23:17, 19, and soon after, in the same speech, denounced the multitude as serpents, as hypocrites, as vipers; and, verse 33, threatened them again with hell. No teacner was ever more abusive in language tnan this ideal Jesus. Seven times in one short dis­course, reported In Matthew 23, he denounced his listeners as hypocrites, and pronounced a woe upon them. Such bitter invective may become a mythical God; but he who oopies this ideal in our day will probably experience a great woe, and possibly passthrough a “ tribu­lation of anguish,” such as those are liable to feel who attempt to address an angry mob, while ail the assembled multitude “ lift up their voices,” and, perhaps, “ smite him on the cheek.”

A riper is the most poisonous of the snake family, and yet, Matt. 3: 7, says {this Jesus addressed those who were present a t his baptism as “ a generation of vipers.” This term was applied quite frequently to the Jews. See Matt. 12: [34; 23: 33, etc. Is it well to hare an ideal dealer in billingsgate for our sons tnd daughters to copy after?“□“ I t is easier for a camel to go through Itho eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter tho kingdom of God.” Mark 10: 25. The conclusion follows in the ideaTs own words: “ Sell whatever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shall have treasure in heaven.” Luke 12:33. That is: Because vagabonds can subsist by beggary, you should take no thought of the morrow. Observe this and you will be happy.

From the quoted and other sayings of Jesus riches seemed to him criminal, while poverty was a virtue, and heaven was the home of babies, those who imi­tate them, and mendicants. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus is In point: The latter was given rest in Abraham's bosom, not for his good deeds, but be­cause he was a beggar. Kellogg, well and favorably known in Ohio and Pennsylvania as one of the earliest lecturers on Spiritualism, earnest, eloquent, of irreproachable character, removed to Wyoming, and was last fall elected from two counties to the Legislature, and at a mass caucus of all parties was forced to accept the speakership of the first House. He has been of efficient service in guarding the equal rights of Woman in that State by statutory law. In a private letter he says: " I am still a warm-hearted Spirit­ualist, and do not hesitate to avow my convictions, and it does not in the least hurt my influence.”

I asked Air. Lincoln if I should offer his statement for publication; “ notat once," he said, though he wished me to write to the editor of The Progressive Thinker and simply say that he had given a communication on the date above mentioned with reference to his assassi­nation. and that he would advise me when to make it public.

On November 8th following, the startl-' ing history of Mr. Lincoln's tragical death, disclosing the details of tho con­spiracy leading up to the fearful deed, was published in The Progressive Thinker.

On December 4th following I received another communication from him, through the same channel, requesting me to publish the communication 1 re­ceived from him September G, 1890. as before mentioned, referring to the clos­ing scenes of his mortal life, which I have done as nearly as possible.

I also asked Mr. Lincoln IT he corrob­orated the history of the crime in all es­sential points as set forth In The P ro­gressive Thinker in its issue of No­vember 8tli. This answer was in the af­firmative. The general reader, he said, might ask whv this opposition to Roman Catholic religion or cnurchV Wo reply that we oppose no form of religion, out

Any speaker, to make a success in public work, must be either a good test medium, or be associated with one. The public de­sire a combination, composed of the tal­ent of music, elocution, a reader of char­acter. and platform and private test me­dium. that will give the impression that they are not idiots or knaves, but sensi­ble* practicable, honest and zealous workers in the cause, of the uplifting of humanity. I sincerely trust this move­ment wifi secure proper attention.

W e have such, and the whole First Society of SpiritualUta, of whom I have the extreme felicity to be an humble member, can sound the “ mead of praise” of more mediums than one In Chicago. For over fourteen years Mrs. Cora L. V. Richmond has. bv iter stead­fastness to duty, her untiring energy, her matchless organisation, been in the constant use of her guides minister­ing to the needs of the society without cessation, never varying for five minutes at duty's call; and the same can be said of her whole ministration of nearly forty years, delivering nearly -1,000 lectures, 'whilst the number of “ name poems” given run up in the tens of thousands:— and when we consider - that this vast amount of work has in the main been done without price; that a monetary consideration for service rendered is the least thing considered: will you wonder that, when last Sunday morning it was announced that she was too ill to 00 with us, that a most profound gloom was thrown over the entire congregation? Poor, dear, tired human nature, ye have your lim it,—but oh, the soul which animates you. is of the Infinite, and necdoth not rest. Every fourth Sunday, it is the custom of the First Society, and tho whole congregation heartily participate, in propounding questions to the guides of Mrs. Richmond, which custom is very satisfactory to all seekers after light. Last Sunday in her absence, one of the lay members of tho First Society. Mrs. Anna Orvis. was invited to fill the vacant place, and from her place as loader of the choir; and, too, she sings divinely, she filled tho place so acceptably, that she was invited to. and was led upon the rostrum at the ovening scrvico by the president. Dr. Bushnoll, whore for forty-five minutes sho was under a perfect cross-fire of tho most far-reaching and scholarly questions that an Intelligent audience could propound, and stood the test grandly, and won a signal victorv and forever has established her plooo high up in tho ranks of our best tuediumship. Mrs. Orvis is not strictly speaking, a trance medium, but sho is partially unconscious, yet senses all that occurs about her.

She is well qualified for tho work of an intlnerant medium, and can bo on-Sagod at two weeks' notice for tho work a any part of tho surrounding territory. Now if the interested ones over the

Mrs. Morrison and a Mrs. Smith of Indianapolis, lnd., have the foundation laid preparatory to erecting new cottages on Buffalo St. Dr. Fllkin's large cottage on 3rd SL, has been sold to William Barnsdell.of Titusville, Pa..and has been rebuilt, rejuvenated and beautified. It Is surrounded .by a fine iron porch and Is really an ornament to the grounds. Mr. S. J. Skidmore is having a large con­servatory, bath rooms and other Im­provement* added to their already beautiful and commodious home. Both he and his good wife are in good health and excellent spirits and their goodwill and generous hospitality toward all is exercised with nnnhating seal.

Mr. Harvey Rathburn and his wife.who is an authoress of considerable note, have rebuilt their cottage on 1st SL, just across the way from their daughter, Mrs.

Mrs. B. M. Purple has been afflicted with a severe and protracted illness, hut we are glad to know has so far recovered as to ho able to make a holiday visit at her daughter's in Dunkirk.

Mr. Richmond reasons with remarkable clearness on a variety of lines and lit* scops In so many fields la surprising. I hare aosn nothing from his pon (hat impressed me more than this “ Sunshine." Spiritualism is the eotrent of natural mysteries and the key toth s “ supernaturalt** that la, the spir­itual and occult that elude the crucible and microscope and defy the dogmatic assumptions of materialtatio science. In this very Interesting aud Instructive lec­ture Mr. Richmond discounts the dog­matic negations of superficial science, and lays hare the weakness of iliis* theories that tired lento Immortality up­on the assumed pro-oxlstones of the con­scious ego. endlessly repeated in periods of annihilation and resurrection, or cycles of re rambod linen ts whloh blot out all memory of previous bslng. As this dogma of materialism has been almost universally accepted without question by Spiritualist*, and all sorts of mystical theories formulated to evade the I agio of its conclusions I am glad to find Mr. Richmond tapping the main art­ery of materialism with his lance of ra­tional coleneo and letting out the coagu­lated blood that has ao Tong obstructed vital circulation and owusented the brains of ordinarily good rcasooeie. be­cause thoy accepted os a settled axiom the assumptions of superficial observers. This discourse probably pleases me the more because it Is on the lino of reason­ing In which I hare bean led for many years by the wiser councils that inspire my thoughts; hut Mr. Richmond is the first writer or sneaker that I have met that squarely tackled this issue and bold­ly ana logically answered the dogma with facts and philosophy, and denied the assumption that whatever begins must end. Others may have dooe It as I have far 20 years, but I have not happened to meet with thorn: and ns thousands are admitting It and shaping their thoughts and reasonings to It, t l seems to me Im­portant that this error—If it be an

{error, and I fed sura It Is—ought to be exposed and corrected, and Mr. Rich­mond from his wide popularity is tho man to give it an airing. For the paal year Mrs. Perram has led the new and only surviv­ing society steadily onward to success. Sho commenced to lecture, entranced, soon after I left there four years ago, and sho has grown in modlumlsllc pow­er and public favor until she is recog­nized by many as equal, if not superior, to many popular speakers who command attention and patronage with old socie­ties and are massed os stars. A good resolution was unanimously adopted hy this young society at Its Inception. Como what would, thoy would have no quar­rels among themselves. A ll differences should ho adjusted peaceably, and how­ever widely they m ight diverge In opin­ions they would remain friends and work together far the common good. If they keep to th is purpose, as they have Bone thus far, thoy are quite sure to prosper and grow In strength, numbers, and usofulncss. Wo had a good audience, and tho host of attention, and the spirit of this gospel of love and light wm tan­gible In all tho air. They sing with real heart and that adds t o the harmony.

I commend tho example and the sav­ing motto of this young society to all others who wish to promote the oauso Spiritualism, whether societies or Indi­viduals, speakers, writers or publishers, and all private workers In tho spiritual

In substance, th a t they would not believe in the occurrence of certain extraodinary facts, such as a re alleged to occur a t '* sp irit seances." though testi­fied to by unimpeachable witnesses; and two of them added th a t even should such facts be conceded by th e o th e r side, they would still refuse to believe them .

Plaintiff's counsel then stated th a t they were prepared to prove the oc­currence of such facts by credible w it­nesses, and th a t evidence of them would be m aterial to h er case. B u t th e judge ruled such evidence to be Irrelevant to th e issue, declaring th a t he would exclude i t if offered, and overruled plaintiff's ob­jections to the jury. Thereupon, plain­tiff's counsel declining to proceed, on defendant's motion th e suitSvas dismissed w ith costs.

The medium, Slade, who professed to obtain d irec t sp irit w ritings between two slates independent­ly of agency on h is part, was prosecuted before a m agistrate under a statue of George □ . for the punishm ent of fortune teller* and o th er pretenders of a sim ilar sort. Colonel H. C. Robley, of the 91 at H ighlanders, hod intim ated a desire to witness one of these ceremonies.
