Communication Please send all correspondence via your child’s H folder… Please label all of their belongings. All dismissal changes, absentee notes, etc. All text books must be covered in a book sock or paper …no

contact paper. Workbooks and notebooks are to be covered in clear contact paper. Lunch tickets may be purchased in advance, but lunch $ may also be

sent in when needed. Please send in the exact amount needed in a clearly marked envelope with your child's name.

Your child’s field trip forms and money should be sent in via their class (H) folder. Please be sure that all checks are made payable to St. Martin de Porres School or if you choose, please send in the exact amount of cash requested in a sealed envelope with your child’s name on it. You are wonderful…

Religion The Archdiocesan Guidelines and Essentials

of Learning are the basis of all instruction. We will enjoy many Bible stories, learn about

various Saints, learn prayers and grow even closer to God throughout this very special year!

Reading We read everything!!! Daily reading is so

important!!! We are not only continuing to learn to read, but also reading to learn!!!

Your children should read their “Book in a Bag” each night and bring it to school each day.

Reading Street Program

Reading/LA Materials Scott Foresman Reading Street Varied genres: Non-fiction, fiction,

biographies, contemporary and traditional literature, magazines and newspapers etc.

We read, write, listen and speak across the curriculum…and beyond!

Writing They will be writing for different

purposes…narratives, communications, descriptions, expository, interpreting, persuasive, analytic, creative and notes/outlines.

We will use the “process” to pre-write, draft, edit, revise and publish their wonderful work.

They are wonderful!

Spelling/Vocabulary Spelling tests will be on Friday’s. All words will be written in your child’s

journal and will are listed on the web page.

20 word lists (5 Words each week are from vocabulary book) Vocabulary tests will be given every other week.

Handwriting

We will brush up on our beautiful printing holding the pencil properly so

we can move on to

CURSIVE!!!

Math We will use many hands on

materials to explore, analyze and problem solve. (Engage NY)

Memorization of basic addition, subtraction and multiplication facts.

Memorization of math vocabulary too. Check our web page

often!

Science The Scientific Method- Nutrition Animal and Plant Life

Cycles Natural Cycles and

Patterns Physical Science Hands on Fun and

Social Studies We will be focusing on

varied communities and geography skills.

We will enjoy learning about economics, resources, citizenship, civics, rules and laws.

God’s beautiful world…and our special place in it!

Classroom Community Our classroom is a Jesus filled community!

We always try our best! Doing our best includes: Using manners Listening carefully and following directions. Being a good friend. Completing work carefully.We use sticker charts and go shopping a lot in second grade!

Every minute is a brand new start!

They are sensational second grade luv-bugs!!!

Homework There will be approximately 20-30 minutes of

written homework Monday through Thursday plus reading the text or Book–in Bag for 15-20 minutes. Your child should read 15 to 20 minutes over the weekend too!

Other Various projects will be assigned. All homework will be written in your child’s

journal and will be posted on our class newsletter. (Again, be sure that you are signed up on the Newsflash page…)

Grades 65% Tests and quizzes 10% Class Work/Participation 15% Projects/Portfolios 10% Homework Language Art Grade: 40% Composition 40% Grammar 20% Spelling *New passwords for the new system are needed each year so please

be sure to return all paperwork ASAP. Report Cards come out at the end of each quarter…Parent
