Our Sunday Mass schedule changes in just a few weeks –

specifically on Sunday, August 5.

We will have only two Sunday Masses from then on ....

at 8:30 am and 10:30 am only!

Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two,

and gave them authority over unclean spirits.

Mk 6:7

My dear Parishioners and Friends,

Are you coming to the Parish Pot Luck Supper this Monday evening (July 16) at 6 pm? I hope so! While the décor and maybe even some of the music will be French (ooh-la-la!), the dish you bring doesn’t have to be! Whether it’s a salad, side, hors-d’oeuvre, bread or dessert, if you bring a dish, you get to sample everyone else’s!!

One of the unique things about our Parish Pot Luck Suppers is that we generally don’t know how to end them! Folks tend to just keep sitting around,

enjoying the last few crumbs of conversation as well as dessert! We need this kind of fellowship, too, in order to cement our bonds together as a Parish family, learn about and from each other, and share ideas about the future and how we can best advance the Gospel in our day and age. We’ll eventually clean up and turn out the lights, but we won’t hurry to do so: time spent with each

other – especially with food! – is so enjoyable.

I did get to spend about an hour this past week with Bishop Michael Duca, who will be installed here on August 24 as the sixth Bishop of Baton Rouge. I didn’t have him “all to myself,” for he was here at the Cathedral for a photo shoot with our parishioner and photographer Marie Constantin. Marie spent almost 90 minutes giving him orders – not many people can do that to a

bishop, after all! – telling him to “sit up straight,” and “smile a bit more,” and occasionally “lean forward and look serious” as her camera snapped picture after picture! I look forward to the official portrait of him that our diocesan Chancery will soon offer to us, but even more I look forward to seeing some of the more informal and “smiling” shots that really do convey Bishop Duca’s sense of humor and his warm, caring personality.

I still have not heard from diocesan authorities how space in the Cathedral will be allocated for the bishop’s Installation on August 24. Admission to the Installation will be by ticket only. Quite a few parishioners have already asked if I could get them a ticket, but according to one member of the dio-cesan Installation Committee the more important priority right now is making

sure all of Bishop Duca’s family and friends, as well as the bishops of the region and the clergy (including deacon’s wives) and seminarians of both his “old” and his “new” dioceses are accommodated. Once those numbers are better understood an effort will be made to provide every Church parish in our diocese with a few tickets. I am sure that if I do get four to six of them it won’t be hard to give them away!

But remember you won’t need a ticket to attend the special prayer service the evening before Bishop Duca’s installation! On Thursday, August 23, at 7 pm at the new St. George Church the public is invited to come and pray to-gether with him and for him. Then, afterwards, there will be a reception when

everyone will have a chance to speak with him and assure him of our support.

Everyone should have a chance to meet Bishop Duca soon. Both the Instal-lation Mass here and the prayer service the night before will be televised. He also told me that he hopes to visit every Parish in the diocese within the first few months, so he can get to know us as we get to know him. It’s an exciting time in the Diocese of Baton Rouge, and we are all certainly full of gratitude to God for His gift of Bishop Duca to us!

Yours always in Christ,

This weekend, July 14/15, we will

take up the annual Catholic Charities

Collection. The monies gathered assist

Catholic Charities agencies here and

across the USA in responding to local needs by

developing programs that help feed the hungry,

clothe the naked, and shelter the homeless.

Please be generous, for Jesus said, “Whatever you

did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did

for me” (Mt 25:40).

The “Ladies of the Cathedral” host their

annual Baby Shower after all Masses this week-

end, July 14/15, in the Parish Hall. Donations of

baby necessities, such as diapers, wipes, bottles,

new or “gently used” clothing and other supplies,

will be collected.

This event assists both needy expecting mothers

and their newborn babies, distributing these gifts

to residents housed at the Sanctuary for Life, a

home for unwed mothers operated by Catholic

Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge. Cash dona-

tions are also appreciated.

You might note that the special collection this

weekend supports Catholic Charities – you can

make a difference with both your contribution in

church and afterward with your donation to the

Ladies of the Cathedral!

Vive la France! We hope you are

coming to our French-themed Parish

Pot Luck Supper, scheduled for this

Monday, July 16, from 6 to 8 pm in our

Parish Hall. Our Development Commit-

tee is working to make this night one to remem-

ber, by décor as well as food! It’s not too late to

consider joining us – just bring a side dish of some

sort (appetizer, salad, veggie or dessert) and come

join in the fun!

Parents of public school child-

ren in grades 1 to 11 are asked to regis-

ter them in a Parish School of Religion

(PSR). Here at the Cathedral, due to our

small number of students, we offer our

parishioners two options:

1) A “home-school” program, which means

most of the lesson work is done at home

parents and their children. Our PSR Coor-

dinator meets with parents and students

approximately 5 ties per year to give gui-

dance.

2) Parents have the opportunity to register

their child(ren) in another Parish (for ex-

ample, St. Agnes, Sacred Heart or St.

Aloysius nearby, or one nearer your

home). If you choose this option, you need

to contact our Cathedral Parish Office so

that we can send a letter of permission for

your child(ren) to attend the program of

that particular parish. (Please remember …

you and your family remain parishioners of

St. Joseph Parish and your child(ren) will

continue to prepare and receive the sac-

raments here at the Cathedral.

So, what to do next? Make your choice and

contact the Cathedral Parish Office either way,

so that we may send the proper registration

forms or permission letter if attending in another

Parish. Deadline to register for our home-school

program is August 24 so that sufficient books can

be ordered. Fees are a minimal $25 for one child

or $40.00 total for two or more).

Not only our own parishioners and friends but

Catholics from throughout the Diocese of Baton

Rouge are welcome to choose their Cathedral for

the celebration of the Sacraments. These im-

portant spiritual events are always scheduled

through our Parish Office (you can just simply tel-

ephone us at 225-387-5928 or send an email to

[email protected]).

Parents must attend a required pre-baptismal

parents’ seminar as well as schedule the baptism.

Preparation for adult Sacramental Initiation (Bap-

tism, Confirmation and Eucharist) takes place as

part of the Parish’s RCIA process throughout the

year.

Second grade children, no matter where they at-

tend elementary school, are prepared for these

Sacraments each school-year within a special pro-

gram here.

Special, brief preparation programs are held here

each Spring, one for our parish’s teenagers who

are in the eleventh grade, and another for other

adults who wish to be confirmed.

Church regulations require at least six months of

preparation for any wedding. Our advice is to call

well in advance of that time to reserve a wedding

date and receive information: our facilities are

often booked in advance well over a year ahead-

of-time! One’s own parish priest or deacon is ex-

pected to supervise the mandatory Catholic pre-

nuptial preparation and to officiate at the wedding

ceremony here.

Our Parish family congratulates Michael Alan

Arney and Rachel Ann Johnson, who were married

here at the Cathedral on Friday evening, July 6, with

Father Brad Doyle officiating. May God richly bless

them as they rejoice in His gift of sacramental love.

May their commitment be an example to us all, as we

pledge to support them and their families with our

ongoing prayers.

The regular collection over the weekend of June

30/July 1 brought in $8,803.00 ($8,152.00 coming

from 130 wonderful Identified Givers, with $651.00

also given in the “loose” collection).

The collection for the weekend of July 7/8 came to

$8,373.00 (99 Identified Givers offering $7,602.00

and the remaining $771.00 given anonymously).

Our monthly Parish appeal For the Maintenance

and Repair of the Cathedral brought in $8,347.00

from 88 Identified Givers, and another $750.00 in

cash donations. Finally, we did also get $623.00 in

early donations from 22 Identified Givers to next

week’s special Catholic Charities appeal.

“Identified Givers” basically fall into three catego-

ries. Many parishioners and friends use our tradi-

tional “offertory envelopes” in giving, and many

others pay by check. Either way we know who

gives and how much! But there is a third, and actu-

ally better way! We highly recommend that you

adopt the “Bill Pay” feature offered by your bank:

set up an automatic payment from your checking

account to us every month. This service costs you

nothing and the Parish gets every penny of your

donation. If we would move to accept credit cards

or if you would authorize us to withdraw funds

from your account, a percentage of your funds will

end up going to the bank!

Want to be even more generous, and perhaps in a

creative way? Include the Cathedral in your will

or in a living trust! This is a way to be generous

with dedicated monies, often in a significant way.

On a smaller scale, sponsor the floral arrange-

ments for weekend and special event Masses, or

underwrite our sanctuary lamp. Or see if you

can help with the costs of things like altar linens,

missals, vestments, incense, furniture, statuary,

sheet music, etc. Catholic worship uses a lot of

“stuff,” and your help in defraying these costs is a

big help!

Why settle for a “Good” Marriage …

WHEN YOU CAN HAVE A “GREAT” MARRIAGE?

You can make the leap from just

“good” to “GREAT” on a Worldwide Mar-

riage Encounter weekend! The week-

end allows married couples to get away

from jobs, kids, chores, the internet &

cell phones, and focus their attention on each other.

If you’d like greater depth, growth and enrichment in

your relationship, you’ll like the difference a World-

wide Marriage Encounter weekend offers! The next

weekend is scheduled on July 27-29 at the Bishop

Robert E. Tracy Center here in Baton Rouge. Regis-

ter online today at www.LAMS-wwme.org or by calling

Matt & Gail Quinn at 504-371-5066.

As 2018’s Atlantic “hurricane season”

continues, pray this traditional prayer

daily! And beg God and His Blessed Mother

to keep us safe from the very real threats

from storms that we in our area know all too well.

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the hum-

ble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee

obeyed Your order and returned to its former

quietude.

You are still the Master of land and sea.

We live in the shadow of a danger over which we

have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and

angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethar-

gy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade

our land, and spread chaos and disaster.

During this hurricane season we turn to You, O lov-

ing Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose

memories are still so vivid and whose wounds

seem to refuse to heal with passing of time.

O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we

ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so

that spared from the calamities common to this

area and animated with a true spirit of grati-

tude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine

Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a

stormless eternity awaits us.

Amen.

[Composed by the Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder (1895-1981), Second Bishop of Lafa-

yette (1956-1973), following the devastation of Hurricane Audrey in 1957]

The Scriptures make it clear that

God will always provide for His followers

on their journey of faith. Trust that you

will receive the grace to carry out the mis-

sion He wishes you to undertake. If you

make time for prayer, study and penance, God will

help you with the rest.

If you think God is calling you to a Church vocation,

you might be right! Contact our diocesan Vocations

Director, Father Andrew Merrick, via email or tele-

phone, either at [email protected] or 225-336-

8778, or visit www.diobr.org/vocations. And please

remember to include this very important need in

your daily prayers!

Generous God,

You show us the way that leads to everlasting life.

Through holy baptism you have called us to pro-

claim the Good News.

Guide and give wisdom to those discerning a

priestly or religious vocation.

Bless and strengthen those who have made a life-

time commitment of service in the Church.

Enrich our Church with dedicated married and

single people, as well as with priests, dea-

cons, and consecrated religious.

Filled with your Holy Spirit, we ask this blessing

that we, your holy people, may follow Jesus,

our Good Shepherd, now and always.

Amen.

As Father Paul mentioned

in his column last week, the Instal-

lation of our new bishop has been

scheduled here for Friday, August

24, but admission is by ticket only.

However, the Diocese of Baton Rouge invites every-

one to a special Evening Prayer on Thursday,

August 23, at 7 pm at St. George Church (Seigen

Lane at I-10, Baton Rouge).

This prayer service will allow us all to pray with and

for the Most Rev. Michael Duca on the eve of his in-

stallation as the sixth bishop of Baton Rouge. A re-

ception will immediately follow. For those unable to

attend, the event will also be simulcast online at

Several times each year the Knights of Columbus prepare meals to be sold at

the Cathedral. The proceeds from these sales provide funding for various projects

and programs sponsored by the Knights. We thank all parishioners for their support.

This last BBQ chicken dinner in June sold out!

And while the financial proceeds are certainly important, what you don’t see is another huge

benefit to the K of C – the wonderful camaraderie we enjoy as brothers in the preparation of

these meals. Please see a little photographic evidence below!
