As we journey through this Year of Mercy, we continue to hear and respond to Pope Franciscall to be practitioners of mercy. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy function as our GPS, helping us navigate this journey. The call to in- struct the ignorant and counsel the doubtful can offer some challenges, but also new insights into mercy. Both of these are tasks that we sometimes shy away from because of the negative connotations held by society. Ignorance and doubt often indicate stupidity and indecisiveness on the part of an individual. However, perhaps we should consider these two actions as invitations to look in a new direction and embrace a new vision with attentiveness and compassion. Rather than only solving as an individuals problem, counseling the doubtful calls us to be with another person in a differenct way. It challenges us to be an authentic presence, to listen and to explore ones doubts together. It invites us to be present to those who are doubtful of the presence and power of hope in their lives. In short, it calls us to assist one an- other to be more deeply rooted in Christ. Meanwhile, instructing the ignorant goes far beyond teaching. True instruction emphasizes the orderly arrangement of things taught. Instruction nourishes. Its goal is to help one discover, embrace and grow in a relationship with an all-loving and caring God. Instructing the ignorant invites us to enter into a mentoring relationship with another. This call to instruct is actually an invitation to give what we have, that dep faith swelling within us. These two works of mercy offer a specific invitation to all parents. At every baptism, Catholic parents promise to be the first teachers of their children, instructing them and counseling them on that journey of faith. Counseling the doubtful and instructing the ignorant challenge us to model wys to be attentive to the needs of our neighbor, both seen and unseen. Through both of these works of mercy we are invited to help shoulder the burdens of another in new and different ways. As parents, our choices and our service to one another model for our children the true call to be merciful, even as your Father is merciful(Luke 6:36).

The Works of Mercy: Counseling the Doubtful, Instructing the Ignorant

By Sister Kathy Burton, S.S.J.

As we journey through this Year of Mercy, we continue to hear and respond to Pope Francis’ call to be “practitioners of mercy.” The corporal and spiritual works of mercy function as our GPS, helping us navigate this journey. The call to in-struct the ignorant and counsel the doubtful can offer some challenges, but also new insights into mercy.

Rather than only solving as an individual’s problem, counseling the doubtful calls us to be with another person in a differenct way. It challenges us to be an authentic presence, to listen and to explore one’s doubts together. It invites us to be present to those who are doubtful of the presence and power of hope in their lives. In short, it calls us to assist one an-other to be more deeply rooted in Christ.

As parents, our choices and our service to one another model for our children the true call to “be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36).

The Gospel

for NEXT Sunday is

Luke 16: 19-31

Generosity

Jesus said to the Pharisees:

“There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen

and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus,

covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps

that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.

When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of

Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried,

and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off

and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and

cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.'

Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember that you received

what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad;

but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.

Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established

to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’

He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers,

so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.'

But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’

He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them,

they will repent.’ Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen

to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise

from the dead.’”
