87 JET Programme Video Contest Award Ceremony MCAnd now, something we’ve all been waiting for. e awards ceremony for the JET ProgrammeVideo Contest, held to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Programme. e JET Programme Video Contest, one of the events held in celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Programme, adopted the theme, ‘JET Participants Introducing the Charms of Japan’s Local Regions’. e aim is to promote the charms and appeal of Japan’s local communities as discovered through the eyes of people coming from other cultures in the form of videos. For this contest, entries were solicited twice, for autumn/winter and spring/summer. For the autumn/winter contest, 50 videos were entered; then another 57 videos were entered in the spring/summer contest, for a total of 107 videos from various parts of Japan. e entered works were screened carefully by a panel of seven judges active in various fields, headed by Mitsuko Okamoto, Professor in the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts. ey chose ten outstanding works for awards, including four works for the Best of Season Awards, one each for the Best Idea Award, PR Award, and Most Voted Video Award, two Special Judges’ Awards, and one First Prize. e contest was honoured to receive sponsorship cooperation by Nippon Travel Agency Co., Ltd., Kinki Nippon Tourist Co., Ltd., Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd., and Keio Plaza Hotel. Let’s begin with the Best of Season Awards. One video was selected for each season, as the work most fitting our impressions of that season.

Asthevideoshows, Tanegashimais locatedontheKuroshio,theJapanCurrent,whichovertimehasbrought

manydifferentpeopleandthingstotheislandaswellassendingthemtootherplaces.Inthe16thcentury,for

example,ashipfromPortugaldriftedtotheislandandbroughtthetechnologyoffirearmstoJapan.Ibelievethis

helpedtheadvanceofdomesticunityofJapanandbroughtusastepclosertomodernization.Historyalsotellsus

thatFranciscoXavier,whobroughtChristianitytoJapan,stoppedinTanegashimaonhis journeybacktoIndia

followinghismissionaryworkhere.Morerecently, the islandbecamehometothe TanegashimaSpaceCenter,

whichhasbeencalledthemostbeautifulsuchfacilityintheworld.LastweektheH-IIALaunchVehicleNo.31

successfullyliftedoffforspacefromthisCenter.

Insuchways,Tanegashimaisalsoaplaceforinternationalexchange,withallkindsofthingsarrivingfromallover

markeachofthefourseasons.ThisissomethingthattheparticipantsintheJETProgramverybeautifullycaptured

intheirvideos.

Speakingofseasons,thevideo ‘SenrinoMichimoIppoYori’beautifullyportrayedthefourseasonsofKitsuki

CityinOitaPrefecture.‘TanegashimaThisisOurIsland’likewisedidagreatjobofshowingthebeautyofnature

onTanegashimaIsland.‘THISISJAPAN’wasexcellentinshowingthefestivalsheldinspring,summer,falland

winter.

Next,numbertwo.Whatdoyousupposewasthesecondmostcommonlydepictedmotif?Theansweris,festivals

Thisistheoneabout TakahashiCityinOkayama.Whatmademelaughthemostwasthatduringtheday,the

streetsaremostlyquiet;butatfestivaltime,forsomereasoneveryonecomesout.Thevideoclearlyshowsthelives

ofpeoplewhohaveadeeploveoffestivals,andtheninpreparationforthefestival,thepeoplefromthecityhalland

variousothersareseenpracticingtheirdanceswithalltheirheart.Ithinkthewayhewasabletogetupclosetothe

peopleandcapturethesekindsofmomentsproducedareallywonderfulresult.Soweweretrulyimpressedbythe

waythevideossucceededindepictingpeople’slivessovividly.

Ibelieveitshowstheimportanceofcommunicationbetweenpeople,andthatmorethananyothermemories,the

connectionsbuiltbetweenonepersonandanotherarewhatremainstrongestinourhearts.Atthesametime,the

participantsinthisvideocontestshowedusverypowerfullysomethingsthatweJapaneseneedtovalueandcherish.

Finally,nowthatwehavesomanyoftheconcernedpeopleassembledheretoday,Iwould liketoconcludeby

makingoneproposal.Thisyear,thevideocontestattracted107entries.That’snotsuchasurprisingnumberforone

Kochi,IwasfamiliarwithAkaoka. Theyhaveafestival there,calledDorome,wheretheparticipantsdrinkup

largebottlesofsake.EvenforKochi,it’saplacethatgoesallout.Todaywewereabletoenjoyapresentationofthe

attractionsofthisbeautifulpartofKochibysomeonewhospenttimethere.Alltheotherswerealsoveryfinevideos

intheirownway.

Thisissaidtobeanageofregionalrevitalization.Whatkindofpeopledoesittaketorevitalizeacommunity?As

thesayinggoes,wakamono,bakamono,yosomono,literally, ‘youngpeople,fools,andoutsiders’.It’struethatif

thereissomeonewillingtopursueathingevenifthoughtafoolorsimple,andanoutsidercomesalongandaddsa

differentpointofview,andthenyoungpeoplefollow,theywillbeabletomakeacommunitycomealiveoncemore,

whichistherealitybehindthissaying.ThepeopleintheJETProgrammedoinfactcometocommunitiesinthe

roleofoutsiders.Besidesthis,however,theparticipantshavebuiltstrongtieswiththelocals,andhavecreatedthese

videosoutof loveforthecommunity.Forthoseofuswhomanagelocalmunicipalitiesthatareworkingtoward

regionalrevitalization,Ifeelthatthisvideocontesthasshownusthethingsweneedtopaymostattentionto,focus

on,andtreatasimportant.

AsMs.Okamotonotedearlier,whilewetendtothinkoftourismintermsofplacesliketemplesandshrines,or

variousartobjects,themostimportanttourismassetwehavetogettouriststoseeisthepeopleofJapan.Thisis

somethingtheentrantsinthevideocontestclearlygrasped,anditshowsinthekindsofimagestheycapturedfor

us.BycontinuingtocompileanarchiveofthesevideosalongwiththehistoryofJET,IfeeltheJETProgramme

willadvancefurtherinthefuturethatliesahead.

Inconclusion, Iwould like to saya fewwordsabout today’s festivitiesasawhole.Aswemarkedour30th

anniversarywewerehonouredwith thepresenceof Their ImperialHighnessesCrownPrinceNaruhitoand

CrownPrincessMasako.Inaddition,threeMinistersinhighlyimportantpositionstooktimefromthebusyDiet

proceedingstooffertheircongratulatorywordstous.Thepresenceofthesedignitariesatthe30yearanniversary

oftheJETProgrammeshowsclearlyjusthowimportanttheprogrammehasbeen.Nonetheless,wewillneedto
