The Valley of the Sun JCC is excited to be participating in the 2010 JCC Maccabi Games®. This year VOSJCC will be taking 48 athletes to Omaha, NE from August 1 - 6.

The JCC Maccabi Games have been offering a life- and personality-shaping experience to Jewish teenagers since 1982. At this Jewish mini-Olympiad, each athlete has the chance to participate in one of 15 sporting events, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Athletes from VOSJCC will be competing in the following team sports: boys basketball, boys baseball, boys soccer, and girls volleyball. In addition, eleven individuals will also be competing in bowling, swimming and tennis.

The JCC Maccabi Games can be called the Olympics for Jewish teens, but they serve a larger purpose than athletic competition. The Games also promote community involvement, teamwork, and pride in being Jewish. This year’s community service donation will include books on the topic of the Holocaust for Middle and High Schools in Nebraska. Team Phoenix has chosen to donate “All But My Life,” by our very own Gerda Weissmann Klein. Gerda is a Holocaust survivor and a long-time resident of the Phoenix area.

Watch for posts on Facebook and our web site for updates on the progress of Team Phoenix.
