Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles Supports MoneyWiseTeen Program and Financial Literacy Training California Council on Economic Education educates Los Angeles teachers with the award-winning MoneyWiseTeen program as part of The Foundation’s grant award to support teaching financial literacy to area youth.

LOS ANGELES, CA (February 12, 2012) — California Council on Economic Education announces a $15,000 grant from the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles to provide best practices financial literacy training to local teachers and students. CCEE was awarded a General Community Grant from The Foundation to be used toward teaching area youth the importance of financial literacy through the award-winning program, MoneyWiseTeen.

MoneyWiseTeen is a robust program, including: professional development for teachers, 10 web-based, online lessons for students; pre- and post-testing; professional mentoring program and contests.

The program shows teachers how to implement the California History/Social Science Standards using lessons geared toward middle and high school students. The story-based lessons educate young adults in terms they understand — teenagers making good and bad financial decisions in real-life situations. Students learn how everyday topics, such as scarcity and opportunity cost, directly affect them. “We are delighted to add Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles to our family of supporters who share the belief that students who enter college or the workforce with real-world knowledge of the economy will be better consumers, savers, investors, workers and citizens,” said William Coffin, CCEE Chairman. “In today’s complex global economy, economic reasoning and financial literacy are just as important as reading and writing.” The grant will enable the training of 80 teachers who will reach thousands of students within the Los Angeles Unified School District. The goal is to train teachers working in low- to moderate-income communities to encourage their students to develop responsible decision-making skills, understand that their choices carry consequences and learn how to manage their personal finances. “For over 50 years, the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles has been an integral part of our dynamic Los Angeles community,” said Marvin I.
