The Rabbi and his wife were assigned to their first Congregation to reopen a shul in Brooklyn. They arrived in February, excited about their opportunities. When they saw the Shul it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time for the Purim Service. They worked hard , repairing, plastering, painting, etc. They were ahead of schedule when a severe snowstorm hit the area. After the storm the Rabbi went to the Shul and his heart sank when he saw all the damage the storm had done to the building. A large area of plaster had fallen off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit. The Rabbi cleaned up the mess on the floor and headed home. On the way home he passed a flea market and stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful handmade crocheted tablecloth with a Mogen David embroidered in the center of the tablecloth. It was just the right size to cover the hole in the wall where the plaster had fallen off. He purchased the tablecloth. (Article continued on page 8)

JRLW BRUNCHEvelyn Dickman

On Sunday, October 16, we will have Leisure World resident Dr. Richard Bambach as the speaker at our JRLW Brunch.

Dr. Bambach will examine the career of Duke Ellington and give examples of the great musician from five decades of his recordings.

As a young man, Dr. Bambach was taken by his father to an Ellington concert that started his interest in jazz. He then studied the form and structure of Ellington’s music and analyzed more than 3,000 performances of the orchestra. This will surely be an informative and enjoyable program.

Mail your check, made out to JRLW for $10.00 per person, to Shirley and Jerry Gordon, 15311 Beaverbrook Court, #3A, Silver Spring, MD 20906. Please try to get your check in early. See you at the Brunch!

PREPLANNING FOR THE FUTURE JUDEAN GARDENS

AND DIGNITY/HINES-RINALDIFred Shapiro

JRLW has working agreements with both the Judean Gardens and Dignity/Hines- Rinaldi funeral home for considerable savings when the unavoidable end occurs. What our members and their families must know is that both are preplanned agreements. They are not there if death has already occurred and the family is looking for relief.

Judean Gardens has issued its new program for JRLW and the latest information reveals that total savings including the burial costs and bronze markers can amount to $1,217.00 per person. JRLW Discount Vouchers must be presented to confirm that the purchaser is a member of JRLW. Questions about the voucher forms can be answered by Fred Shapiro, [email protected], at the present time. To make things easy, the signed forms can be obtained by checking the JRLW mail slot in the E&R office in Clubhouse I.

For information about the funeral and financial arrangements with Hines-Rinaldi (Dignity), it is best to contact Jamie Arthur at Dignity to get the latest information about the engagement of funeral director services when needed. Jamie can be reached at 202-966-6400 or his cell phone 240-463-6884. The savings here can be considerable.

Preplanning not only provides for the arrangements for the future needs, but it is a way of making sure that your children are not placed under any unnecessary pressures and expenses when the time comes.

NA’AMAT NEWSRuth Reid

At the end of the summer we start wondering about the Jewish Holidays and when they are arriving. Usually we ask, “Are they late this year or early?” Well, this year they are definitely late. Rosh Hashanah Eve arrives on Sunday night October 2, and the first day of Rosh Hashanah is Monday, October 3. So let us not waste another moment before wishing all of you who are reading our column to have a happy, healthy, peaceful New Year. This is a time for reflection and also a time to look ahead. We may face new and unexpected challenges in the new year. May we meet them with hope and energy, and if need be, a little help from friends and family.

On Wednesday, October 5, we will have our annual luncheon/fashion show; always a big hit. We feature clothes from the boutique, “The Look,” in Olney. This shop is unique and the clothes distinctive since the owners make certain that you won’t find these items anywhere else and that you will enjoy wearing these lovely creations. Call Harriet Chaikin (240-560-7487) to see if there is availability to attend.

On Wednesday, November 2, at 12:30 pm in the Clubhouse I Ballroom, there will be an open meeting. The speaker will be Valerie Kaplan whose topic is “Jews In The Old West.” And yes, there was Jewish life beyond the Hudson River. She will tell us how grandparents immigrated from the “old world” and ended up in Colorado. An interesting story different from the many other immigrants who came to Ellis Island and settled on the east coast. Refreshments will be delicious. Come and bring your friends..

On Thursday, December 8, we will have a card party.

New Year’s Eve plans have been made. First, we go to the Signature Theater for the musical “Titanic” and then back to Leisure World for a fabulous buffet. We had this last year and it was a huge success. Call JoAnn Cadeaux for more information (301- 438-0737).

There will be a Board Meeting on Tuesday, October 18, 10:30 am in Clubhouse I.

Sukkot is one of the three pilgrimage holidays. A Sukkah is built to remind Jews of the structures used by the Israelites as they moved through the desert during the forty years of transit from Egypt to the Promised Land.

The building of a Sukkah on the grounds of the Interfaith Chapel is an annual event. If you are able to help in its construction on Tuesday, October 11, please call Bob Fenichel at 301-598-0285. CANTOR’S CORNERMichael Kravitz

One of my favorite characters in all of Jewish tradition is Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev. He was a Chassidic Rabbi who lived from 1740-1810 and served congregations in Poland before taking his most famous position in Berdichev which is located in northern Ukraine. I first became familiar with him, probably in the early 1960s, through a wonderful recording of a song THAT IS called either “A Plea to G-d” or “Rabbi Levi Yitzchak’s Kaddish” and was sung by Jan Peerce. It’s a very emotional song in which Rabbi Levi Yitzchak asks G-d why He is allowing all of the terrible things that are happening to the Jews. As the song progresses, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak says “I will not stir from here! An end must there be to this- it must all stop.” And then, remembering to whom he is speaking, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak finishes with “Oy, yisgadal, v’yiskadash sh’may rabbah (magnified and sanctified be the name of G-d).”

I would have loved to be in the presence of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak as he led services from the bimah. According to reports from his congregants, he would shout, he would cry, he would wave his arms wildly, he would sit quietly before unexplainedly bursting out into a sing-song story while striding back and forth on the bimah. Was there a safe place for the chazzan to stand? Probably not.

With Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur coming up this month, I’d like to share a story about Rabbi Levi Yitzchak that I’ve adapted from one told by Rabbi David Eliezrie.

There was a time when Rabbi Levi Yitzchak’s congregation in Berdichev was looking for a cantor for the High Holy Days. Many cantors applied for the position. Given the fame of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak and the fact that thousands came to his services, a cantor who succeeded there had his reputation made for life. Serving with Rabbi Levi Yitzchak for the High Holy Days would have likely been the equivalent today of singing a lead role in a production at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Surprisingly, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was not particularly concerned with the cantorial skills a candidate possessed. Rather, he was concerned

with the candidate’s spiritual qualities. If he was to lead the congregation in prayer, the cantor needed to show that his actions in life were worthy of the responsibility. So, after hearing many cantors with great voices who sang with great emotion, a simple villager from a nearby town stood before Rabbi Levi Yitzchak to apply for the position. “How will you lead the service?” Rabbi Levi Yitzchak asked. The villager replied “I WILL PRAY TO G-D THAT MY DAUGHTERS FIND MATCHES.” The villager had two daughters who were getting older and he was concerned that they marry and start their own families. “Finished” said Rabbi Levi Yitzchak. “You will be our cantor for the High Holy Days.” That left the long line of applicants totally confused. A simple villager had gotten this plum of a position. How had he beaten out all the applicants with better voices and long resumes of service? Rabbi Levi Yitzchak replied “his prayer is from the depths of his heart. He is not looking to impress anyone; he is asking G-d in a pure way for his needs for the coming year.”

This story made me think of a reading from the Silverman Sabbath and Festivals prayer book that I’ve read many times over the years. It is called CLEAN HANDS AND A PURE HEART and is found on page 346. I think it is particularly meaningful at this time of the year. The last part of it is taken from Psalm 24, and I’ll slightly change the wording to be gender equal. “Who shall ascend the mountain of the Lord and who shall stand in His holy place? He/She that has clean hands and a pure heart; who has not taken G-d’s name in vain and has not sworn deceitfully. He/She shall receive a blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the G-d of his/her salvation.”

Rosh Hashanah is a time of new beginnings. So, let me wish each of you a SHANAH TOVAH with the sincere hope that G-d will grant all of our needs and that each of us can look forward to a year of health, happiness and blessings in 5777.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Matzoh Balls

A Texan came to New York for the first time, hav-ing never tasted Jewish food. On the recommen-dation of a friend, he went to the Lower East Side to eat at a real Jewish restaurant.

He looked at a menu, but everything on it was strange and new and he simply didn’t know what to order. When the waitress came, he pointed to a bowl of soup on another table and asked what it was. The waitress replied, “That’s matzoh ball soup.” “OK,” said the Texan, “I’ll have that.”

He got his soup. On seeing the 2 large matzoh balls in the soup, the Texan man was hesitant to taste this strange looking brew. Gently, the wait-ress pressed the Texan, “Just have a taste. If you don’t like it, I’ll take it back and not charge you for it.”

He agrees. He digs his spoon in, picking up a small piece of matzoh ball with some soup in the spoon, and tasting it gingerly. The usu-al “mmmm” sound can be heard coming from somewhere deep in his chest and he quickly fin-ished the soup.

“Ma’am, that was truly deli-cious. I never had anything like this before. Tell me, can you eat any other parts of this animal?”

GOOD AND WELFARE JoAnn Cadeaux is qvelling! Her grandson, Ethan, a journalism major at the University of Maryland, just landed an internship with the Redskins. As longtime fans of the team (not to mention of Ethan’s!), the family is thrilled.

Congratulations to Joy and Bob Stromberg on their 69th Wedding Anniversary!

Rose Closter is celebrating her 100th Birthday! We all wish this special lady a very happy and healthy Birthday!

Happy 75th Birthday to past JRLW president, Larry Sperling.

Jewish Residents of Leisure World Silver Spring, Maryland

March 2011, Adar 1 - Adar 2, 5771 Newsletter Editor: Bernice F. Cohen 301-598-0192 Website: http://www.jrlw.org
