SUKKIOT, SHEMINI ATZERET & SIMCHAT TORAH Submitted by Michelle Schafer

Sukkot is a joyous holiday with two significant reasons for celebration. The first is the Festival of the Harvest in which we give thanks for the fruits of the earth and gifts of nature. Although we no longer live in an agricultural society, we can still celebrate earth’s bounty. The other reason for the celebration is to remember the time following the Exodus when our ancestors lived in temporary homes or booths much like the Sukkahs we build in commemoration today. On the 8th day of Sukkot prayers are offered for rain. While we have had an abundance of rain this summer in Florida, it is the dry season in Israel which is why it is timely and time for traditional prayer. Simchat Torah follows on the 9th and final day of Sukkot. At this time the last two chapters of the Torah are read along with the first portion of Genesis. This occurs because we must never finish the reading of Torah. This is a very joyful occasion often accompanied with singing and dancing. A sumptuous meal is served featuring foods of the harvest accompanied with meat or fish.
