" ... ll GREENBELT NEWS REVIEW
Facing ·Reality December, which should be a time of happy family gether
inas, merry parties with our friends, gaily decorated homes and a general feeling of warmth even as the fierce northern winds chill the air. This year seems to be also a time of stress. We want to make every wish come true-but the reality is that few of us can. At the supermarket, we gasp at the price of hamburger - $1.59 a pound last week at a local chain store. Gu for our cars - can it really be over $1.00 a gallon? What was It lut year? 65c Clothes. If we spend $25.00 on a shirt, can we afford to buy another gift? Events around the worldin Iran and elsewhere - seem to conspire against us.
The joyfulness of the se•son is mixed with stress. At this very time GHI members face one of the lareest increases_ in monthly, charges ever presented to them - 21.6'7r is being requ~ted by the Board of Directors., Some will say "no" just on tlae fat'e of it; it is too much. .
But is. it reasonable, then, to expect that' prices in every major area will increase without housing C!>sts also rising?
It is necessary to look at the facts. Rising fuel oil prices account for almost all .of the requested· increase. Rising service costs - taxes, tra&h, water and sewer - account for the re-mainder. ·
The record shows a concrete effort by GHI over the past ftve years to cut heating costs: conversion from steam to hot water in the frame homes, atomizing burners in the four large heating plants, variable temper•ture !'Ontrols in the masonry homes. The rehabilitation program - long in the planning sta~e - la about to C!Ommence. TIH! next p~am Will Illlely be a change in GHI's heating system - probably from its largely ineftlcient 40-year old boilers to another system. All this will require both moral and material cooperation on the part of the memben.
It is to the GHI ·board and management's credit that in a time of double-digit inflation, they have been able to reduce coats elsewhere in the budget. With this belt-tightening, GHI may be able to maintain the current level of maintenance and other services necessary to run the cooperative. To pare the budget much more than has been done, we fear, might result in the corporation's not being able to meet its llnancial obligations, or might mean that services would be decreased to the point that homes would suffer-
We urge GHI members to study the budget information they rea!ived, to attend the information hearings m order to after constructive input - and to attend the membership meetlnl; Wednellday, December 12, to vote in accordance with the n~~lllles of the time in which we live.
