Unfortunately we had a no-show on the day in the form of Paul Webb-Jones. Paul made the fatal mistake of finding himself in the company of Doc Jones and then was caught between drinking himself pretty and readying himself for the next day’s game of golf in the end, by all accounts, he succeeded in neither! Alas, the wrath of the fines master will descend heavily on Paul. Rule # 15 of the Jiggers Rules provides for a mandatory AED300 for a “no -show”. In addition there could well be a green fee to recover if the Club decides to hit my credit card that secured the booking. Suggest a visit to the ATM en route to the next game Paul! On a serious note I am sure you can all appreciate that a “no-show” stuffs up the draw and the game for the remaining members of the 4- ball and needs to be avoided. Our new handicapper raised a point subsequent to the game there are far too many score cards with glitches in fact some of you may have done yourselves out of the prizes due to mistakes on your cards! Please make an effort to be neater and more accurate I would suggest you do not test the sense of humour of our new handicapper you may find yourselves on the wrong side of having a few shots shaved off your handicaps. A reminder guys please can we try and make an effort to stay for prize-giving wherever possible in accordance with the Jiggers ethos. Please note that wives and families are welcome to join us for prize giving and lunch the prize giving chirps etc generally pass the family viewing rating! This may score you more points with your “brakes” than you score on the course! A point for us to perhaps be mindful of in our fast changing city the Chairman’s new 5 wood went walk about after the game at the Emirates Faldo. Hopefully we aren’t reaching the point of checking clubs and balls before and after we play! On the off chance that it has found itself in to the wrong bag please can you guys (and ask your guests on the day) to check in your bags.

Captain’s Report April 2012

April Game – Emirates Golf Club – Faldo Course Friday 06 April 2012

Another well attended (considering it was Good Friday) and enjoyable Jiggers game was held at Emirates Golf Club – Faldo Course on Friday 06 April 2012. Thanks to our Vice Captain, Kelvin Tayfield for standing in for me for the day.

Thanks also to Craig Strydom for another very well organised event – great to see the early notification and communication with the club.

We had 23 players (after 1 no show – more on this later) including 18 Jiggers and 5 Guests. Considering the holiday period this was a good showing and I understand an enjoyable day – thanks Craig.

Welcome to our 5 Guests: -

Scott Griffiths

Ed deClerq

Stewart Selby

Paddy Dalton

Dustine du Preez

Bruce Penn did a great job as Fine’s Master on the day and fortunately for Sean Drury he wasn’t playing so there was no revenge from the March fines!

Unfortunately we had a no-show on the day in the form of Paul Webb-Jones. Paul made the fatal mistake of finding himself in the company of Doc Jones and then was caught between drinking himself pretty and readying himself for the next day’s game of golf – in the end, by all accounts, he succeeded in neither! Alas, the wrath of the fines master will descend heavily on Paul. Rule # 15 of the Jiggers Rules provides for a mandatory AED300 for a “no-show”. In addition there could well be a green fee to recover if the Club decides to hit my credit card that secured the booking. Suggest a visit to the ATM en route to the next game Paul! On a serious note – I am sure you can all appreciate that a “no-show” stuffs up the draw and the game for the remaining members of the 4-ball and needs to be avoided.

Our new handicapper raised a point subsequent to the game – there are far too many score cards with glitches – in fact some of you may have done yourselves out of the prizes due to mistakes on your cards! Please make an effort to be neater and more accurate – I would suggest you do not test the sense of humour of our new handicapper – you may find yourselves on the wrong side of having a few shots shaved off your handicaps.

A reminder guys – please can we try and make an effort to stay for prize-giving wherever possible in accordance with the Jiggers ethos. Please note that wives and families are welcome to join us for prize giving and lunch – the prize giving chirps etc generally pass the family viewing rating! This may score you more points with your “brakes” than you score on the course!

A point for us to perhaps be mindful of in our fast changing city – the Chairman’s new 5 wood went walk about after the game at the Emirates Faldo. Hopefully we aren’t reaching the point of checking clubs and balls before and after we play! On the off chance that it has found itself in to the wrong bag – please can you guys (and ask your guests on the day) to check in your bags.

Updated games register also attached. We have not been successful in securing the Emirates Majlis

presently a 9 hole course played twice but will give us something new. Take note of changes to the

games organiser and fines master as well.

Movers and Shakers

After numerous farewells and false starts our Friendly Pom Handicapper in the form of “Calvin Klein” Bayly played his last game as a Jiggers member. We have already had word that Martin and Anne are planning a visit to Dubai early in 2013 so I am sure it will be timed around a Jiggers game and we will see him gracing our fairways again armed with the latest in R&A rules.

As you know Brian Schofield has taken up the cudgels of our Scorer and Society Handicapper. Brian has already made some impressive changes to the handicapping system - with the two previous handicappers being far more technically challenged – well done Brian. Please keep submitting all your scores for ALL your games to Brian on [email protected]

We welcome Paddy Dalton as a returning Jigger to full membership again. In addition to Paddy’s fondness for Thai food (the edible kind!) he was known as a prodigious long hitter so I am sure he will have Muscles Penn straining that sphincter of his on the longest drive!

Membership

Please note updated membership sheet attached – changes highlighted in red. Take note especially of changes in email ID’s.

Updated Jiggers “rules” also attached for reference.

A reminder for any of you who wish to propose any new members for future consideration – please let me know and make sure they get invited to play from time to time.

MatchPlay

Updated matchplay sheet attached. Please make sure you try and keep up to date with the matchplays so that we avoid any pressure come the end of the year.

Louis Oosthuizen’s Double Eagle Ball

To those of you who may have stayed up to watch the final round of the Masters – I found this interesting bit of trivia: -

“OK, what happened to the famed “albatross” ball of Louis Oosthuizen that he tossed into the gallery surrounding the second hole at the Masters on Sunday? Well, as you have probably seen or read, it was caught by Wayne Mitchell, 59, of New Tripoli, PA which is outside Allentown. Vice-President of Air Products, Mitchell and his wife were tournament guests of an executive of Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan. Along the rope line, they had been seated at the par-five second hole since 10:00 a.m., patiently waiting over four hours for the leaders to come through. After he caught the ball and placed it into his pocket, Mitchell was later escorted by security and Augusta National members to Butler Cabin where he met Billy Payne, Augusta National’s Chairman. As reported by several news outlets, including the Augusta Chronicle and The Morning Call, Mitchell’s local newspaper in Bethlehem, PA, Mitchell gave the ball to the club for its archives located in the Trophy Room which includes the ball Gene Sarazen holed out with for his iconic double eagle in 1935.

As quoted in The Morning Call earlier this week, Mitchell said: “I'm not a souvenir-grabber. For me, the ball clearly represented a special moment in history. Now, it's in the hands of the club, where it belongs." Mitchell and the club declined to discuss details on the actual transaction. However, I’ve learned from a reliable source that in exchange for the ball Mitchell was offered two Lifetime Passes to the Masters. Before happily accepting, Mitchell also asked Payne for one other request: the opportunity to play Augusta National. Payne said that could be arranged. That’s what I call a great catch: Lifetime passes to the Masters topped off by a memorable round at Augusta National. So next year don’t be surprised to see patrons with catcher’s mitts.”

You may also not have seen this aerial winning shot of Bubba Watson on the final playoff hole. The shape of this shot is nothing special to a number of us Jiggers save for the fact that ours are never by design!
