Captain’s Report Oct 2012

Oct Game – Tower Links Golf Club - Friday 12 October 2012Our October and 10th game of the year was held at Tower Links Golf Club on Friday 12 October2012. Considering this was an out of town game and tee times commenced at 7 in the morning itwas pretty well supported and enjoyed by all who made the great trek. Once one has overcome thehomophobic men’s change room, Tower Links is always a good day out and the course was in greatcondition. Fortunately the weather was not as fearsome as has been the case with the past fewgames.

A big thank you to big Vince van der Bijl for his great organisational skills in overcoming some lastminute glitches from the Club and getting the day underway. Due to the Club having mislaid ourreservation we had to slot in with a Men’s open tournament which meant a 3 ball alliance formatfor the first time in Jiggers. It made a pleasant change although the tension in some of thematchplay “dog-fights” meant the team connotation of an alliance was somewhat missing!!! It is on

record that a certain well known black puppy popped his head out of the bag on a few occasionsand was seen to be running quite freely around the course at times – even chasing birds into themangrove swamps! So much so that the dog’s master was unusually fined for slow play. (Pity SeanDrury was not there to witness that!) Really well done Vince and great to see you back on thecourse after such a long layoff following your rather inglorious trip up from the beach! Judging bythat silky swing we can only speculate as to how you have managed to strengthen that arm of yours!

We had 20 players including 15 Jiggers and 5 Guests – one late withdrawal from one of our guestsmeant a swinger in one of the 3-balls. Great effort from Corey Spring leaving Abu Dhabi at Fajrprayer time to make it to Tower Links for such an early tee off. Also – one of our guests – RichardMurray who came straight from the airport after a night flight in to DXB.

The Fines Master for the day was Brian McKerchar who sneaked in a few well thought out fines forsome unsuspecting players. A number of players got the bit between their teeth at the 19 th withJack, Lime and Coke making an early entry once the communication barrier between us at theBolshevik watron had been overcome. Good Jiggers spirit – great to see.

No excuses re the weather so let’s have a good turnout for this one.

Games Roster

No change to the games roster at this stage for the remaining 2 games. We have commencedbookings for next year’s roster and will circulate this in due course.

A further reminder – the year end game will be played at The Els Club on Friday 07 December (firstFriday of the month not the second as is usual). It will be played in the afternoon with tee timescommencing from 12:00 noon. We will hold the day’s prize giving after the game and commencefrivolities together with our released “breaks” straight after that. Kelvin will communicate details

in due course. In the interim – get out the voltaren and start greasing those ageing joints for a bitof a “knees up”! (Please ensure you and your various Ministers of Home and Social Affairs diarisethe date.)

Movers and Shakers

No news on the movers and shakers this month – even “Broadcast News Dekker” has been quiet! Iam sure there must be news of interest to Jiggers – so guys please drop me a mail if there issomething you think should be shared.

Membership

No changes.

A further reminder, barring injury a Jigger needs to play not less than 6 games in the year to retainhis membership of Jiggers for the following year. There are 2 games remaining so those guys whohave not played that many so far will need to bear this in mind. There are a few guys who are indanger of missing the cut!

Also, please let me know if you have any guys whom you wish to put forward as prospectivemembers so I can add them to the list. For those who have proposed members, please don’t forgetto invite them to play Jiggers should we have spare slots in the field. Participation is one of thecriteria’s we look at when choosing new members.

The gap closed a bit this month – 2 games to go – get those jockeys out on the track – “Frankel”Hudson can still be caught. Remember the winner will take 50% of the pool, 2 nd place 30% and 3rd place 20%. The pool will be worth AED1600. Any ties, the prize money will be shared. Away Tourgames are not taken into the calculation. A lot of loot at stake!
