Late August of 1776
Washington (US) vs Howe (British)
Washington’s troops are outnumbered
Patriots have to flee (run away) escape from New York and battle is important because it really hurts the spirit and almost destroys the Continental Army!
Battles of Trenton and Princeton
Both are towns in New Jersey
Hessians vs Patriots (Washington as leader)
Trenton on December 25th,1776 (Christmas night) and Princeton one week later
Washington crosses the Delaware River and surprised the enemy.
Patriots win both battles and captured lots of Hessians AND American soldiers re- enlisted because their spirits were lifted!
Battle of Saratoga
Located in New York: British wanted to take New York so they could divide the colonies
Actually two battles: one in September 1777 and the second in October 1777.
Gen Burgoyne (British) v Gates (Patriots)
Patriots win both battles: 6,000 British soldiers surrendered, including Burgoyne!
France decided to help the Patriots after this victory because the Patriots were able to prove that they had a chance of winning the war. Historians call this a turning point in the Revolutionary war.
Vincennes and the West
Located in Indiana, 1779
George Roger Clark (Patriots) vs Henry Hamilton (British), Hamilton was also known as the “Hair Buyer”.
Clark attacks the British fort
Patriots win the battle
Patriots now control the west, except the British Fort at Detroit!
Savannah, Charleston, Camden
British captured Savannah in December 1778, later rest of Georgia
British captured 5,500 Patriots in 1780 at Charleston
The defeat at Charleston was the worst defeat for the Patriots in the war!
Patriots lost at Camden, South Carolina in July 1780
Looks like the Patriots might not win the war and the south is being taken over the British
King’s Mountain, Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse
October 1780, King’s Mt Cornwallis (British) lost against Green (Patriots) because the British were surrounded.
Cowpens, South Carolina January 1781: Morgan (Patriots) vs Cornwallis. Americans won the battle.
Guildford Courthouse, North Carolina: Patriots defeat Cornwallis in March 1781
Cornwallis and British troops flee northward to Virginia!
British no longer in control of the south!
