Chile has always been at the end of the world. It was only partially incorporated into the Inca Empire and was a remote, poor part of the Spanish colonial empire. It was not until after Independence in 1818 that it became a more significant member of the global community. From approximately the 1840’s on Chile had relatively stable and orderly governments. By the 1870’s Chile was a modern and relatively prosperous country, exporting wheat to California, copper and nitrates to the rest of the world.

Chileans are conservative and honest. Chileans seek relationships in business not just a business arrangement. They prefer dealing with individuals, not impersonal organizations. Courtesy and respect are guiding principles of good etiquette in Chile. The hug and handshake are common greetings. When entering a room, a woman can expect that those present will rise and expect to shake her hand. Chilean wine is recognized as among the world’s best.

Location and EconomySouth America’s most stable and prosperous nation.

Chile is world’s longest and thinnest country, measuring over 4300km (2700 miles) from north to south and only 240km (150 miles) from east to west. In the north lies the driest desert in the world; in the south, immense glaciers crawl slowly over the wind-swept Patagonian terrain; and in between, volcanoes, lakes, mountains, rivers, valleys, and forests.

Chile is one of South America’s most stable and prosperous nations. In May 2010 Chile became the first South American country to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The mission of the (OECD) is to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world.. In 2006, Chile became the country with the highest nominal GDP per capita in Latin America.

Chile’s overall trade profile has traditionally been dependent upon copper exports. The state-owned firm CODELCO is the world’s largest copper-producing company, with recorded copper reserves of 200 years. Chile has made an effort to expand nontraditional exports. The most important non- mineral exports are forestry and wood products, fresh fruit and processed food, fish meal, seafood, and wine.

Page 12: Jim Earley and Earleygraphics, Olympic Brochure

9

In 2011, Chile had an estimated population of 17,500,000, of which approximately 9.1 million or 52.7% are of European descent, and those with mixed ancestry estimated at 44%. Its rate of population growth has been decreasing since 1990, due to declining birth rates. The largest population center is Greater Santiago with 5.6 million people. Chile’s various waves of immigrants consisted of Spanish, Italians, Irish, French, Greeks, Germans, English, Scots, Croats, and Palestinian.

The climate of Chile comprises a wide range of weather conditions across a large geographic scale.

Within its borders Chile hosts at least seven major climatic subtypes, ranging from desert in the north, to alpine tundra and glaciers in the east and southeast, humid sub-tropical in Easter Island, Oceanic in the south and Mediterranean climate in central Chile.

There are four seasons in most of the country: summer (December to February), autumn (March to May), winter (June to August), and spring (September to November).

Demographics and ClimateWaves of immigrants add wonderful variety to life here.

The culture of Chile has an overwhelmingly European touch to it. This is why many western travelers feel much more comfortable in Chile compared to neighboring countries of Bolivia and Peru.

European style education of the Chilean population for centuries has given shape to Chilean culture in the form of rich music, art and architecture amongst other things.

In Chilean history, Mapuche Indian art is known for beautiful metal work, especially jewelry and necklaces.

The influence of the silver coin from the Spaniards had a major affect on their craftsmanship. Museums in Santiago and throughout Chile offer visitors a glimpse into the unique culture of Chile.

Painting, architecture, literature and sculpture have also been prominent in Chilean culture.

Dance is a important part of Chilean culture. We actually have a national dance that goes by the name of Cueca. This dance was developed in 1824. Our national song is known as the Tonada.

Chilean WinesThe allure of Chilean wines is no illusion.

Chile has a long viticultural history for a New World wine region dating to the 16th century when the Spanish conquistadors brought Vitis vinifera vines with them as they colonized the region. In the mid-19th century, French wine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were introduced.

Viña Indomita winery rests in Casablanca valley. It is surrounded by barren but protective mountains. Chardonnay grapes, already perfectly formed on the well-tended vines, sits in generous fertility. They are warmed by the sun and produce grapes for the famous Chilean prize-winning wines.

Chile is now the fifth largest exporter of wines in the world, and the ninth largest producer. The climate has been described as midway between that of California and France. The most common grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenère.

Chile has remained free of phylloxera louse which means that the country’s grapevines do not need to be grafted. Chilean wine makers have been developing a distinct style for their Cabernet Sauvignon, producing an easy drinking wine with soft tannins and flavors of mint, black currant, olives and smoke.

While the streets of many Chilean cities boast its architectural legacy in the form of homes, buildings and bridges the country also houses a number of important museums. However the Chileans are particularly renowned for their diverse and unique literature.

Chile is home to several Nobel Prize poets including Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda. Their homes have actually been turned to museums. A number of contemporary Chilean authors have gained recognition around the world as well.

The author of the House of Spirits, Isabel Allende and the author of Love and Shadows, Eva Luna are amongst the best Chilean international sellers.

In painting, Roberto Matta, a 20th century painter, is a world known artist who used abstract and surrealist technique in his work. Sculptor Rebeca Matte (1875-1929) was the first Chilean woman to embrace the art. She was commissioned to produce a piece by the government of Chile as a gift to the government of Brazil which she called ”Icarus and Daedalus”. Marta Colvin (1907-1995) gained international status by exhibiting her work in cities around the world.

Olympic DesignThe logic and beauty behind the design.

PICTOGRAMS: Based on the circle theme of unity and family. The swirl curved pattern represents speed across snow or ice. Blue color taken from the Chilean Flag. White represents snow.

POSTERS: Posters use a vibrant action photo of the Olympic venue and the Santiago Olympic Logo. The Olympic ring logo is added to emphasize the games, but the opacity is reduced so as not to interfere with the overall design. Posters to be placed in both Movistar and Estadio Nacional stadiums. Individual posters placed on each venue’s location. Posters/Signage also placed through Santiago.

SIGNAGE: Repeats the theme of the wave and circle. Colors of the wave reflect location; Orange is Movistar Arena, Blue is Estadio Nacional, Green Valle Nevado.

BROCHURE FONT & COLOR THEME: Myriad Pro used for it’s elegant, conservative and readable feature, a good reflection of Chilean culture. Color theme reflects the Latin heritage of Chile with winter complimentary colors. Brochure has divided center layout representing Chilean flag.

The Copihue (Lapageria rosea), also known as the Chilean Bellflower and Chilean Glory Flower, is the national flower of Chile. It grows in the southern part of Chile. It is an evergreen climbing plant reaching up to 10 meters (32 feet) high among shrubs and trees. The flowers are red, with six petals. The fruit is an edible berry with numerous small seeds. In the wild the plant is pollinated by hummingbirds.

The coat of arms of Chile dates from 1834 . The background is supported on one side by a condor, the most significant bird of prey from the Andes, and in the other, by a huemul, a singular and rare mammal of the Chilean territory. Both animals have on their heads the Navy’s golden crown, symbol of the heroic deeds of the Chilean Navy. Underneath the coat of arms there is a white band with the motto: “Por la Razón o la Fuerza” (By reason or force).

The flag of Chile consists of two equal horizontal bands of white (top) and red; there is a blue square the same height as the white band at the hoist-side end of the white band; the square bears a white five-pointed star in the center representing a guide to progress and honor; blue symbolizes the sky, white is for the snow-covered Andes, and red stands for the blood spilled to achieve independence. The flag of Chile is similar to the Flag of Texas, although the Chilean flag is 21 years older.
