First Demonstration of 2013 Jim Rodgers presents

    Building Open Segment Vessels

Open segment vessels are a fast-growing technique requiring less precision than ring-segmented construction and requiring differ-ent construction techniques.

I will explain the concepts, de-sign, techniques, and show the software that makes it simple. In constructing the individual ves-sels I will show three different approaches, each has advantages, fixtures, and disadvantages. I will explain when and how to use each technique.

Each step will be shown in video clips so we can view all aspects of construction.

Several BAWA members are now exploring these techniques and are encouraged to bring their work to show.

The Bay Area Woodturners Association is a local chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. Our purpose is to provide a meeting place for local turners to share ideas and techniques and to educate the general public regarding the art of turning. The As-sociation usually meets the second Saturday of each month. The Association periodically sponsors exhibitions and demonstrations by local and internationally known turners.

    President’s MessageBAWA January Newsletter 2013

Happy New Year! We survived another 365 days and made a new resolution to be “better” in 2013.

With the coming of the New Year there are lots of new things happening with your BAWA chap-ter. We have a new Board of Directors (BOD) and new location for our meetings. We have new members that recently joined our club. You likely got new tools from Santa to use in the shop. The New Year also provides all of us a new start with life and new goals to work on.

Today, technology provides us with new modes of communication using both wired and wireless devices. One of my goals for the club is to realize a new web page that is both “user friendly” and has current club information. Our primary mode of communication as a club is through the Internet via Email and through our web page. Another device that we all use to communicate is our cell or landline phone. As we prepare for the 27th anniversary of our parent organization, the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) I want to get to know each of you better. You can communicate with me via Email, phone or in person at any of our 12 monthly meetings.

Please introduce yourself to me or other members of the BOD and help make this association the best it can be.

    Respectfully,Bill MellbergEmail: [email protected]: (925) 699-8214Home: (925) 484-0316

Thanks to the 2012 Directors and meet the new 2013 BAWA Board of Directors

As the new year begins, it’s appropriate that we recognize the 2012 members of the Board of Directors and thank them for a job well done. As a volunteer organization there are many hours spent planning and coordinating the events that happen on a monthly basis at our regular meetings. This year we had the honor to be the host chapter for the AAW Symposium held in San Jose. If you get a chance, please personally thank the following members for their service in 2012:

President, Jim Rodgers; Vice President, Don White; Secretary, Kathy Kennedy; Treasurer, Bill Mellberg; Member at Large, Roz Harper and AAW Symposium Liaison, Dean Adkins.

As we look forward to this year’s events, we are excited to be adding new members to our Board of Direc-tors who will need your continuing support. Please congratulate and support the following members who have accepted the challenge to serve on the 2013 Board.

Each member brings unique skills and talent to the club. Each is an artist and a craftsman who loves the medium we call wood, with all its colors, textures and natural beauty. We have an exceptional group of talent in the Bay Area Woodturners Association. We are all better for the experiences we share and our commitment to education and the development of youth for a future of woodturning. Please continue to attend the regular meetings and commit the time and resources to make our club the best it can be.

Demonstrator Raffle Raises $815At the December Annual Party all the demonstrator turnings from last year were raffled off, which raised $815 for the BAWA coffers! This is a new record so thanks to all of you who bought tickets. We also need to thank our 2012 demonstrators who donated turnings: Jimmy Clewes, Mark Knize, Graeme Priddle, Glen Krueg, Don White, Molly Winton, Bill Mellberg and Tom Wirsing!

Joanne White had the first ticket drawn and made a bee-line to the tiger stripe maple platter turned, finished and signed by Tom Wirsing. Fred Deadrick took Jimmy Clewes flying saucer bowl next, which was turned from figured hard maple and dyed on the top then lacquered. The third piece selected was Graeme Priddle’s maple bowl with pyrography and black acrylic paint, with Larry Brooks being the proud owner. All in all it was a great fundraiser and sets the bar pretty high for next year!

    New & Renew!

We had two new members in December, and they are from the same family! Let's welcome fa-ther and son, Adam and Michael Vergio , both of Livermore, and both intermediate turners.

We still have 59 members from 2012 who have not renewed in 2013. I know some of you have just been busy or forgetful, but please let me wrap up the task of renewals in January. At pre-sent 39% of last year's members haven't committed for 2013. That makes it almost impossible for our board to know how much money is available to get our outside demonstrators. Please help this dedicated group of volunteers do their best job by doing your part and paying your dues this month.

If you can't attend the meeting, please send me your check at 160 Las Quebradas Lane, Alamo, 94507.

    Dear Bay Area Woodturners Association,

In 2010, I left Boston on a journey to teach as many people as I could, in one year, how to make a simple object out of wood. I called the project Turning Around America. Armed with two mini lathes, a grinder, a small bandsaw and hand-tools, in a Van that was part living and part shop, I traveled 30,000 miles, and reached 3000 people. At some stops I was lucky enough to get volunteers from local woodturning clubs to help me, allowing many more kids and adults to experience the magic that is woodturning. If there were no volunteers I taught wood shaping and cutting with simple hand tools. The impact was huge. Most of the people I taught had never touched a tool. The excitement on their faces and the emails I received lat-er were very inspiring.

Being mobile allowed me to access communities that did not have woodturning/woodworking in their schools or art centers. I brought the workshop to them. While I traveled, my col-league Jenn Moller created and maintained an interactive web site so everyone could follow my progress. After my year on the road, Jenn and I accepted an invitation to teach the vil-lage of Vera Cruz, Guatemala how to use hand tools. This was also a very empowering pro-ject for us as well as the villagers.

Turning Around America continues this idea of mobile education by launching our new pro-ject, Sanctuary. Sanctuary is a prototype we are designing and building, of a mobile art/ craft studio that is on a trailer base. We launched the campaign on December 21 through USAArtists.org, to acquire funds to build the studio. USA Artists is a nonprofit art founda-tion that umbrellas artists under their non-profit status. All donations to our project through them will be tax deductible. We have until February 6th to raise our goal of 30,000 dollars. The prototype we build will be used by Turning Around America to continue our mo-bile teaching mission. Having two traveling studios will allow us to cover more ground and reach more people with our mission - to empower person-to-person, hand -to -hand. Turning Around America has been invited to turn around Boston Public Schools for the month of Oc-tober 2013. We are also planning a return to the village of Vera Cruz to teach woodturning for one month in November 2013. We cannot do all these projects without your help. I am asking woodturning clubs everywhere to help me with the challenge of continuing craft/art education for future generations. To Donate, Please go to our site atwww.turningaroundamerica.com and press the Sanctuary button, which will take you to USAArtists.org to learn more about our project. I feel strongly that we are the stewards of our craft. If we do not pass our skills on to a new generation, who will?

    Thank you,

    Beth Ireland
