The Lamp Lighting Ceremony for the 10th batch of B.Sc. Nursing students of College of Nursing,

JIPMER was held on 10.12.2015 at JIPMER Auditorium. Prof. Dr.  (Mrs). Vinitha Ravindran, Deputy Dean, College of Nursing, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore was the chief guest of the programme. The ceremony was presided by Dr. Subhash Chandra Parija, Director, JIPMER

emphasized the students to acquire skills to care for the patients with various diseases ranging from chronic illnesses to palliative care and involve them in research in the field of Nursing. Prof. Dr. J. Balachander, Medical Superintendent, JIPMER delivered the presidential address and motivated the nursing students to enhance their learning by observing patient care in the ward and include the patient guidance as part of their nursing care.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by the Dean and other senior faculties of JIPMER. Dr Kalayarasan, Assistant Professor Surgical

JIPMER Health Education Initiative

Under the leadership of Professor Dr. SC Parija, Director, JIPMER, a new initiative had been started to improve

public awareness on health and disease which would include a series of interactive programs conducted on a fortnightly basis. The programs will be in Tamil and are planned for every 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month between 3.30 and 5.00 PM.

The 12th,13th,14th and 15thsessions focused on “Dengue Prevention” “Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)-Threats and Treatments”, “HIV / AIDS” and “Hydrocele and Elephantiasis” respectively. These sessions

had active participation of 750 people including students from various schools and colleges, general public, patients, and staff.

Flood relief efforts by JIPMER

On behalf of JIPMER HELPING HANDS, a flood relief camp was organized by Department

of Pharmacology, JIPMER at Narumanam village, in Cuddalore district on 19th December 2015. Faculty, doctoral students and residents from departments of Pharmacology, Anatomy, PSM and Pediatrics were involved as volunteers. Nearly 200 families were provided with relief materials like bed sheet, towel, kitchen items and other necessary daily needs. Donations were received from various departments of JIPMER, around Rs.75,000 was spent for this camp.

A free Medical camp was conducted in Poothurai village in the Vanoor Taluk of Villupuram District by JIPMER.

Specialists from the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, General Medicine, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and

Orthopaedics provided free treatment to the villagers. JIPMER also

conducted a medical camp along with Indian Coast Guard, Chennai at Bharaniputhur village in Kanchipuram

district.

Dr.Subhash Chandra Parija, Director-JIPMER was awarded “Dr.

SundaramSubramaniam Memorial Oration Award 2015” by Indian

Association of Biomedical Scientists (IABMS) for his contribution in the

field of medical sciences and research.

Dr. Shashi Ahuja, Associate Professor, Ophthalmology Was conferred “Shyam Lal Saksena Memorial Award” for the year 2015 in recognition of the research paper entitled“Retinal nerve fibre layer thickness analysis in cases of papilledema using optical coherence tomography-A case-control study”. at the annual convocation of the National Academy by the Governor of Bihar on 17 th October,2015 at AIIMS, Patna.

Dr. Debdatta Basu, Professor, Pathology attended 43rd Annual Conference of IAPM – Odisha Chapter at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Brahmapur, Odisha on 12th and 13th September 2015 as an invited faculty.

Dr. Debdatta Basu was an invited speaker at (SMVSIPCON 2015) , held at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College, Puducherry .

Dr. Debdatta Basu delivered a talk on “Multiple Myeloma – diagnostic issues, then and now” in the 56th Annual Conference of ISHTM held at Bangalore.

Dr. Adhisivam. B, Neonatology was awarded National Neonatology Forum (NNF) Social Neonatology Gold Medal for the research paper titled Postnatal counseling on exclusive breastfeeding using video – experience from a tertiary care teaching hospital, south India.

Dr. Hema S, Pathology, won the First Prize in the Best Poster Paper Award session in the National conference (APCON) 2015, held from 3rd to 6th December 2015 at Kochi, Kerala for the poster entitled ‘ Morphological Profile of Large Intestinal Neuronal Plexuses in perinatal autopsies and Hirschsprung Disease”

Dr. Gerard Marshall Raj, Dr. Rekha Priyadarshini and Dr. Indumathi, Pharmacology, won the first prize in the “Intermedical Postgraduate Quiz Programme” conducted by the Institute of Pharmacology, Madurai Medical College, Madurai on 20th November 2015. Dr. Nishanthi, Dr. Vimala and Dr. Umamaheswari, secured the third place, in same.

Dr. Thiraviyam E, Radiotherapy, has won the prestigious Neil Joseph Fellowship for his thesis work in the 37th National Conference of the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (AROICON2015) at Lucknow

Dr. Keerthivasan G, Microbiology, won second prize in the quiz conducted during MICROCON-2015 – 39th Annual National congress of the Indian Association of Medical Microbiology on 29th November 2015

Mr. T. Yugendran, Ph.D. Scholar, Microbiology, has been awarded the prestigious Dr. K.B. Sharma Memorial Best Junior Research Paper award for the year 2015, during MICROCON 2015 –for standardizing the TaqMan probe based screening assay for antibiotic resistance genes.
