JAPANESE INDUSTRIAL STANDARD JIS G 0321 : 2010

Product analysis and its tolerance for wrought steel

1 Scope

This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies the product analysis and its tolerance for the killed steel products of rolled or forged carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel and heat resisting steel (hereafter referred to as "wrought steel").

In addition, the application of this Standard shall be as stated in the individual product standards.

2 Norma ti ve references

The standards listed in table 1 contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this Standard. The most recent editions of the standards (including amendments) indicated in the table shall be applied.

3 Terms and definitions

For the purpose of this Standard, the terms and definitions given in JIS G 0417 and JIS G 1201, and the following apply:

3.1 heat analysis

analysis of chemical composition performed by the manufacturer according to a Japanese Industrial Standard or other certain documented procedure, for determining the representative values of the molten steel

This analysis is generally carried out on analytical samples 1) taken during a series of procedures in which the molten steel is poured into a mould from a ladle and then solidified.

Note 1) Where it is not feasible to obtain the analytical sample from the molten steel, such as in vacuum arc remelting method (VAR), electro-slag remelting method (ESR), or other method, the analysis is carried out on analytical samples taken from steel ingot, steel slab, or steel material, and the results are applied to the heat analysis.

3.2 product analysis

analysis carried out on analytical samples taken from wrought steel

NOTE: The analytical values obtained by a product analysis can differ from those obtained by a heat analysis due to segregation, and can also show variation between different samples.

3.3 tolerances for product analysis

permissible deviation of the individual value of product analysis from the upper limit value and/or the lower limit value of the heat analysis specified in a standard of wrought steels

2 G 0321: 2010

NOTE: For example, when the upper limit value of heat analysis of carbon (C)

specified in a standard of wrought steel is 0.25 %, and the tolerance for product analysis on the plus side designated in a standard of wrought steel in accordance with this Standard is +0.03 %, the permissible upper limit value of product analysis is 0.28 %.

3.4 original analysis method

analysis method not specified in JIS, which falls under either of the following:

a) An appropriate steel analysis method developed by steel manufacturers, steel users, laboratories and so on, which is made public in the form of library, research paper and so on, and whose preciseness is verified by the certifying standard material and so on.

b) An analytical method prepared by altering a part 2) of the procedures of the relevant JIS standard method so as to have a broader range of application, and which satisfies the critical limit from a certified value, repeatability limit and within laboratory reproducibility limit specified in 7.2 or 7.3 of JIS G 1201.

Note 2) Mass of sample weighed, aliquot ratio, the amount of extracted solvent, or other matters.

3.5 sample product

product sampled from the test unit for inspection and/or test

4 Method of sampling for analysis

4.1 Method of sampling for analysis

The method of sampling for analysis shall be as follows:

a) The analytical sample for product analysis shall be taken from a position representing the average chemical composition of the cross-section of the original steel billet.

If the method of sampling is not specified in the product standard or in the requirements given in the order of the product, the analytical sample may be directly taken from the specimens or test pieces for the mechanical test, or a sample product.

b) The analytical sample shall be free from scales, rust, paint, plating metal, decarburized layer and impurities. Further, the analytical sample shall not be used if oxidized, rusted or soiled during storage.

When the sample is taken from chips produced in machining, the sampling procedure shall be in accordance with 4.4 of JIS G 0417.

c) When the analytical sample is to be taken directly from a sample product, the procedure in clause 10 of JIS G 0417 shall be applied. However, if this is impracticable, analytical samples shall be taken by a suitable method referring to 4.1 a)

and 4.1 b). In this case, the sampling method shall be subjected to the agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

3 G 0321: 2010

d) When the analytical samples for the emission spectrometric analysis and fluorescent X-ray analysis of the product analysis are to be directly taken from a sample product, the samples which comply with JIS G 1253 and JIS G 1256 shall be taken in accordance with clause 10 of JIS G 0417. However, when the sample for instrumental analysis can not be taken in accordance with 4.1 a), the analysis shall not be carried out.

4.2 Number of analytical samples

When the number of analytical samples is not specified in a standard of wrought steel, one sample shall be taken from a unit of products manufactured from the same heat.

5 Analysis method

5.1 Chemical composition specified in each standard of wrought steel

Analysis method shall be as follows. In the case of doubt arising as to the analytical value obtained by the instrumental analysis, a re-analysis may be performed by a chemical analysis method.

JIS G 1211, JIS G 1212, JIS G 1213, JIS G 1214, JIS G 1215-1, JIS G 1215-2, JIS G 1215-3, JIS G 1215-4, JIS G 1216, JIS G 1217, JIS G 1218, JIS G 1219, JIS G 1220, JIS G 1221, JIS G 1222, JIS G 1223, JIS G 1224, JIS G 1225, JIS G 1226, JIS G 1227, JIS G 1228, JIS G 1229, JIS G 1232, JIS G 1233, JIS G 1234, JIS G 1235, JIS G 1236, JIS G 1237, JIS G 1253, JIS G 1256, JIS G 1257, JIS G 1258-1, JIS G 1258-2, JIS G 1258-3, JIS G 1258-4, JIS G 1258-5, JIS G 1258-6, JIS G 1258-7, JIS G 1281

5.2 Chemical composition not specified in each standard of wrought steel

Apply methods in 5.1, and if the component or the content rate under question can not be determined by methods in 5.1, an original analysis method agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser shall be applied.

6 Tolerances for product analysis

The tolerances for product analysis shall be as follows:

a) The tolerances for product analysis are given in table 2 to table 5.

As a rule, table 2 and table 3 shall be applicable for carbon steel, table 4 for alloy steel (excluding stainless steel and heat resisting steel) and table 5 for stainless steel and heat resisting steel. The application of tables shall be as specified in the respective standards.

b) The values obtained from the product analysis shall not exceed the prescribed maximum value of chemical composition plus the upper limit value given in tables 2 to 5 or be lower than the prescribed minimum value minus the lower limit value given in the said tables. However, the tolerance shall be obtained from the table of tolerance based on the specified maximum value of chemical composition. If only the minimum value is specified, the tolerance shall be obtained from the table of tolerance based on the minimum value of the chemical composition.
