Human needs are incessantly changing withtime. Some basics remain constantthroughout, whereas, others evolve in
alignment with external variables.Similarly some trends remain - only gradually al-
tering themselves along the way, whereas, othersdisappear making way for newer expressions.
Since 2009 there has been a definite shift from theZen philosophy that ruled foreign design trends -minimalist is out and maximalist is clearly in. Inurban India it's rather marked that people loveshowcasing their new stature in society and opu-lence and luxury are the key words in residentialdesign.
Future design sensibilities suggest that sustain-ability and modesty will make another comebackinto Indian decor. But the return to minimalismand Zen won't be as extreme as it was the last timearound. Its comeback will carry along new con-temporary modern overtones with emphasis onaccent accessories that will play a very importantrole in completing the look.
The best news is furniture will be lighter, withmobility it's key. People don't want to eat in thesame place every day.They like to be able to movearound and perch in the living room with traytopped and nesting tables.
Similarly rooms will have less furniture with de-signs that will be both modular and portable.There's a need for variation and there will be lotsof small or accent pieces.
Instead of velvet inspired rich hues, it'll be backto basics with white and nature inspired colorsjuxtaposed with natural materials used in cre-ative ways. Wood will be used as the main moodmaker - playing an enormous role in architectur-al finishes.
Wood wallpaper will be used more like timber.Masculine textures with a rough and uncut lookwith the furniture looking more outdoorsy.
The concepts of sets will be dated - including din-ing chairs, bedroom suites, and china too. Pairs,however, add balance and cohesiveness and willstill be around.
The rustic,piecey and planked look will also be asought after look, with a prevalence of campingcolors like green as an important hue. Trywrought iron garden furniture indoors as it looksarchitectural and adds vintage charm. Largelamps typically used to light a walkway couldmake an unusual and interesting light over thedining table.
Grasslands inspired decor will be seen as a bigtrend, with the insides reflecting the outsides.Grass is being used inside as well as outside and isa new material for the interior - Wood is even wo-ven like grass to create textures.
Linen and weaving are also important elements,with rattan and bulrush coming back in a big waybut with a more sophisticated lacquer.
Weaving, knitting and other old school arts andloom inspired techniques will make their presencefelt in soft pastel country décor inspired shades.
Laser cutting will be less perfect,with a progres-sion from fragile delicate fabrics to more naturaland unprocessed materials like wool.
Stressing again on the imperfect, vintage em-broidery and haberdashery looks are all ongoingwith a lot of patchwork and recycling evident inthe rooms landscaping. Don't be afraid to mix thehigh-end treasure with the fabulous haberdashery
find. Unusual old things found anywhere can bere-purposed in modern environments to achievegreat results.The value of period defying productswill slowly reveal itself in Indian décor.
As for the bedroom,say goodbye to duvets.Therewill be a prominent shift with layering of beautifulsheets, blankets and throws to stress the urgentneed for more textiles in the house to add softnessin juxtaposition to the rawness of the masculinefurniture.
Bedrooms will also be allowed dual personalities- A double size or twin bed can be made up with lay-ers of big pillows to look like a divan in a livingroom, den or office. A beautiful chest of drawerscan be both decorative and practical if used to vi-sually balance a similarly scaled piece of furnitureon the opposite side of the room.

Since the minimalistic look for the future is so in-dividualistic and basics inspired,it's important tobe true to your own design aesthetic and not worrywhether your choices are in good taste and yourdecisions are correct.

This will alsocome handy for buyers on a later date if actualconstruction deviates from the plan."
Neeraj Jha (name changed),a Delhi-based journalist,nar-rates the sad story of his ownfamily where siblings foughtfor several years as the title ofthe property left behind bytheir parents was not clear."Itwas very sad. I was involvedin a protracted legal battlewith my two brothers on theissue of dividing the familyproperty.
