carol at the ProcessIon
Once In Royal David’s City .........................................................................................................................................................H. J. Gauntlett(1805-1876)
*In the tradition of King’s College Chapel, our experience begins with this timeless carol and a great procession. Please stand as the crucifer passes your pew and join in singing as instructed.
Stanza one: Max Cook, soloist Once in royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed. Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.
Stanza two: Choir alone He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall, with the poor and mean and lowly lived on earth our Saviour holy.
Stanza three: Congregation and Choir And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden, in whose gentle arms he lay. Christian children all must be mild, obedient, good as he.
Stanza four: For he is our childhood’s pattern, day by day like us he grew. He was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us he knew: And he feeleth for our sadness, and he shareth in our gladness.
Stanza five: And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love. For that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heaven above; And he leads his children on to the place where he is gone.
Stanza six: Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by. We shall see him; but in heaven, set at God’s right hand on high. Where like stars his children crowned all in white shall wait around.

All bells in paradise ..........................................................................................................................................................................John Rutter (b. 1945)
Deep in the cold of winter, darkness and silence were ev’rywhere; softly and clearly, there came through the stillness a wonderful sound, a wonderful sound to hear: All bells in paradise I heard them ring, sounding in majesty to the news that they bring; all bells in paradise I heard them ring, welcoming our Savior, born on earth a heavenly King. All bells in paradise I heard them ring: “Glory to God on high; the angel voices sing. Lost in awe and wonder, doubting, I asked what this sign might be: Christ our Messiah revealed in a stable, a marvelous sight, a marvelous sight to see. He comes down in peace, a child in humility, the keys to his kingdom belong to the poor, before him shall kneel the kings with their treasures, gold incense and myrrh.

Joseph’s carol ....................................................................................................................................................................................John Rutter(b. 1945)
Long and weary was the journey, hard and dark the road we trod; deep enfolded in the stillness of the night it seemed I heard the voice of God: ‘Fear not, Joseph, weep not, Mary, travel onward through the darkness of night; Bethlehem will see his glory: Christ, Emmanuel, the Lord of light.’ Ecce miraculum, Here in a stable lies your heav’nly King, Alleluia hear the angels sing. Journey’s end was just a stable bare, cold and lonely for a birth; ox and ass were our companions there when God revealed himself on earth. Shepherds came in awe and wonder, kneeling low beside his manger stall; angels singing, wise men bringing gifts to lay before the Lord of all.

A babe is born ......................................................................................................................................................................... William Mathias
(1934-1992)
A babe is born all of a may, to bring salvation unto us. To him we sing both night and day. At Bethlehem, that blessed place,
the child of bliss now born he was; and him to serve God give us grace. There came three kings out of the East, to worship the
King that is so free, with gold and myrrh and frankincense. The angels came down with one cry, a fair song that night sung they
in worship of that child: a babe is born all of a may, to bring salvation unto us. To him we sing both night and day.

Surge, illuminare, Jerusalem ................................................................................................................................................... G.P. da Palestrina
(1525-1594)
arr. William J. Bullock
Rise up shine forth enlightened, Jerusalem, for your light of lights is coming and all the Lords’ glory is rising to shine on you.
For behold, deep darkness blankets all of creation and evokes the people’s gloom, while above you comes, rising up, the Lord,
your God. The light of His glory, breaks forth and shines on you.

The dream Isaiah saw ............................................................................................................................................................Glenn L. Rudolph
(b. 1951)
Lions and oxen will sleep in the hay, leopards will join with the lambs as they play, wolves will be pastured with cows in
the glade, blood will not darken the earth that God made. Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart.
Bring the dream Isaiah saw: Life redeemed from fang and claw. Peace will pervade more than forest and field: God will
transfigure the violence concealed deep in the heart and in systems of gain, ripe for the judgment the Lord will ordain.
Nature reordered to match God’s intent, nations obeying the call to repent, all of creation completely restored, filled with
the knowledge and love of the Lord.

Heavenly Light .................................................................................................................................................................. Alexander Kopylov
(1854-1911)
Sent from heaven, Thy rays were given on great and small to shine, O Light Divine! May each soul in sorrow’s night see the
heavenly light. Thou Blessing to all creation, lead us to our salvation. All those whose feet may falter, lead unto the sacred
altar. Oh shine from above, Divine Light of love. Show us the way unto our God, we pray. Thou our beacon and guide shalt
be. Light Divine, we praise Thee!
