W oow! I am continually impressed by everything the members of the JLNVB accomplish. After just wrapping up the League’s two Signature Spring events – Kids in the Kitchen

and Beach Ball 2011 – I am so proud of all we do to help our community and engage our friends, family members, partners, and sponsors. I, like many others who attended these events, had a fantastic time and saw firsthand how the League’s mission was lived out in grand fashion! To quote JLNVB Past President Adelaide Snyder, today’s Junior Leaguers are “like iPhones – we can do almost everything!” And for those who did so much – I offer my sincerest appreciation:

Thank you to Betsy Glover, Tracy Pope, Katie Rider, and the Kids in the Kitchen Committee for hosting a fun day and educating so many children at our annual health and fitness fair.

Thank you to the YMCA for being such a wonderful partner to the JLNVB and for hosting Kids in the Kitchen at the Greenbrier facility.

Thank you to Carin Schneller-Carr, Ellie Desselle, The Beach Ball 2011 Committee, and the Finance Council for your tremendous leadership of Beach Ball 2011!

Thank you to Katie Rider for your amazing work designing our Kids in the Kitchen and Beach Ball 2011 graphics!

Thank you to Jessica Antel and Alexandra Hunter for your amazing work in securing sponsorships for our Spring events!

Thank you to Richard Harris, one of the most inspiring Community Partners and Gala honorees I’ve known. We are so appreciative of your support and partnership.

Thank you to Vanessa Coria – you were the perfect emcee for Beach Ball 2011!

Thank you to the JLNVB Board of Directors for your tireless work this year and unwavering support of our key initiatives.

With gratitude,

Five Simple Steps To Success Parents and caregivers can set a great example for the whole family by creating a healthy environment at home. Any combination of steps — making fruits and vegetables part of every meal, limiting treats, walking and playing, even shopping together — can add up to make a real difference in children’s lives and help build healthy habits for life. 1) Keep fresh fruit in a bowl within your child’s reach to grab as a quick snack.

2) Make physical activity part of your family’s routine.

3) Plan a menu for the week and get your children involved in planning and cooking.

4) Turn off the TV during meals and share some family time.

5) Talk to the principal about organizing a school health team.

Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady one year ago, dedi-cated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation so that kids born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Kids in the KitchenEvent Wrap-Up & Thanks

The JLNVB’s Kids in the Kitchen event was held on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the Greenbrier YMCA in Chesapeake, VA. Over 100 children registered to have fun while learning to exercise and balance their diet.

The Kids in the Kitchen Committee, led by Chair Betsy Glover, worked tirelessly in the weeks leading up to the event and numerous community partners were present to edu-cate the participants.

Watching the children learn how they need to incorporate the basic five food groups into their diet was fun and informative! Fruit, vegetable, grain, protein and dairy food stations included treats such as grapefruit, kiwi, sliced red, green and yellow peppers, chick peas and black beans, Goldfish® and bran crackers, frozen yogurt, and cheese.

After the sampling of all the food groups, there was chef hat decorating table and af-terwards they learned how to prepare a healthy plate. The Chesapeake Police attend-ed to educate our young participants and their parents on safe outdoor exercise. The American Diabetes Association, the YMCA, Chesapeake Public Schools, local nutritionist

Jim White, CHKD and the Young Chef’s Academy were also present to educate families on the importance of a leading a healthy lifestyle. The JLNVB also had a bounce house, hula hoop station, and face painting.

Our Beach Ball 2011 Honoree, Richard Harris, was on hand to help show chil-dren the importance of exercising and he was kind enough to donate three of his children’s books for our raffle prizes.

Just before 1:00 p.m., many children gathered with their parents in the gym for the an-ticipation of winning one of the many raffle prizes such as bicycles, a scooter, a basket hoop set or many various other fun gifts.

The JLNVB’s Kids in the Kitchen event was a tremendous success and many people are looking forward to next year’s event!

Many thanks to the hard working committee of Katie Rider, Tracy Pope, Anna Starzell, Kelli Wyrick, Jennifer Rawls and Nancy Wilkinson who helped plan such a successful event!

Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen is an Association-wide initiative of The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) designed to help communities address the urgent issues surround-ing childhood obesity and poor nutrition. Junior Leagues are committed to improving the health of today’s youth by empowering them to make choices that lead to healthy lifestyles. The initia-tive illustrates the power of voluntarism to address community needs on both the grassroots and international levels.

ODI 2011: Tampa Attendees Share Their Experiences

In March, with their thinking caps on and ready to learn, JLNVB members Elsbeth Des-selle, Aisha Evans, Neshondria Jonson, and Jamie Stump jetted off to the Organizational Development Institute (ODI) held in Tampa, Florida. ODI is sponsored by the Associa-tion of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) and is a three-day conference designed to help members further develop their potential as a League leader through workshops while providing thought-provoking topics and networking opportunities that allow for sharing of best practices and common solutions. Presentations were given on topics ranging from Diversity and Inclusion, Fund Development, Achieving Community Impact, and Membership Development.

Attending the Diversified Fund Development track, Recruiting Chair-Elect Jamie Stump found the “M&M Factor” to be a key component all members need to understand and promote. Mission & Money as it is coined, and in the Junior League, one can’t success-fully survive without the other. If all members can’t clearly articulate the mission, we are missing the opportunity that we may have had to make that person you met at an event or in the elevator decide to become a community partner, donor, or even a member. So ask yourself, what do you say when someone asks you, “What is JLNVB and what do you do?”

It’s simple, tell them we P D I:

Promote volunteerism

Develop the potential of women

Improve communities

Be sure to attend the April 20, 2011 General Membership Meeting in Chesapeake to hear more about the experience of the ODI attendees. Who knows? Maybe you’ll attend next year’s session!

On Sunday, March 27, 2011, over 20 JLNVB members, family and friends attended a be-ginner’s self-defense class at the Mount Trashmore YMCA in Virginia Beach. The hour-long training session covered the ready stance (also known as the “Basic Warrior Stance”) bal-anced movement and foot placement, three skill sets, and information about planning, practicing, and the state of mind most beneficial to personal safety and defense.

The theme of the training was: Think, Plan, and Never Give Up. Self-defense should be natural movements that could be effectively executed with minimal training and practice. With continued practice and vigilant planning, one may avoid dangerous situations and react appropriately when confronted by an immediate threat.

Notes About PlacementAre You Ready For Year-End?

Member Status Changes

Are you Sustaining? Do you need to take a Leave of Absence? Just a reminder, if you intend to change your status for the upcoming League year, then you will need to complete a Change of Status Form by April 30, 2011. This form can be found on TidewaterNet (www.jlnvb.org) in the JLNVB Resources section (under Interactive Forms). Completion of this form automatically notifies the Placement Chair and the Office Manager of your request. One of them will contact you to further discuss your request. If you have any problems completing the online form, please contact Ruth Elkins at [email protected] or (757) 469-2971.

Member Obligation Fulfillment Are you concerned that hours you have completed are missing from your record or you may not be able to fulfill all of your obligations?

It’s important that any issues be discussed and resolved by April 30, 2011 and the Place-ment Committee (the Placement Chair, the Transition Chair, the Provisional Chair and all Advisors/Mentors) is here to help.

Here are the steps you should take to ensure your commitments are fulfilled: 1. Check your current obligation fulfillment status by logging in and reviewing your mem-

ber page on TidewaterNet (www.jlnvb.org)

2. If any hours that you’ve completed are missing, please contact the Chair of that Commit-tee to confirm that hours have been turned in to the JLNVB Web Liaison, Hanan Mitry, to be posted. If the hours have been turned in and they are still missing from your record, please contact your Advisor or Mentor and let them know: what, when and the time you worked (from when to when) and the event contact. Your Advisor or Mentor is your advocate and will get these issues straightened out for you.

Page 33: JLNVB eTIDEings Magazine

www.jlnvb.org

3. If you are concerned that you may not be able to fulfill all of your obligations, you need to let your Advisor or Mentor know as soon as possible so you can work together to come up with a plan. The JLNVB is very accommodating and we try to help each of our members fulfill her obligations in a way that works best with the member’s personal schedule.

Why is the April 30th date so important? Each member’s obligations will be reviewed on April 30th per the Membership Section of the Bylaws, Policies and Procedures (page 27, Section II.F, Failure to Meet Membership Requirements). Following that review, members will be notified via a letter of any outstanding obligations (based on what is recorded in TidewaterNet). Membership Council understands that the record may be incorrect and we depend on you to inform us of any errors. In addition to being notified of any unmet obliga-tions, the options available for fulfilling your outstanding obligations will be listed. If you receive this letter, please keep in mind that it is only intended as a notification of where

you stand and what options are available for you. These may include fines and the possibility of working make-up hours. In order to remain in good standing for the 2011-2012 League year, all obligations should be sat-isfied by May 31, 2011. If you have any questions about this process, please contact your Advisor or Mentor or Ruth Elkins, the Placement Chair, at [email protected].

Junior Leagues Remember...These Impactful Women

Margaret Chase Smith, Congresswoman

Reading about the life of Margaret Chase Smith is like read-ing a short history of America in the 20th Century. Born December 14, 1897 in Skowhegan, Maine, Margaret Chase worked briefly worked as a teacher, telephone operator and newspaper circulation manager. She became involved with women’s organizations, including The Junior League, in the 1920s, and married Clyde H. Smith in 1930.

When Clyde, an aspiring politician, was elected to the United States House of Representa-tives in 1936, Margaret went along with him – as his secretary. But when Clyde died four years later, Margaret succeeded him and, after winning four terms in the House, won elec-tion to the United States Senate. In so doing, she became the first woman elected to both houses of Congress.

But Margaret Chase Smith’s story is more than a first-woman-to… story.

While still in the House, during World War II, she introduced legislation granting perma-nent status for women in the armed forces and co-sponsored the Equal Rights Amendment. After delivering her now-famous Declaration of Conscience speech denouncing the tactics used by her Republican colleague Joseph McCarthy in his anticommunist crusade, some pundits speculated that she might find a place on the 1952 Republican ticket with Dwight Eisenhower (she didn’t – Richard Nixon did).

In 1964, she ran in several Republican presidential primaries and took her candidacy all the way to the Republican National Convention in San Francisco, becoming the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for the presidency by a major party. She came in second to the Senator Barry Goldwater, who went on to lose to Lyndon Johnson. Later, she went against her own party in casting a crucial vote against President Nixon’s nomination of Clement F. Haynsworth for the Supreme Court.

Page 37: JLNVB eTIDEings Magazine

www.jlnvb.org

In 1970, she went on to deliver a Second Declaration of Conscience speech in reaction to campus disruptions and antiwar protests. And upon losing re-election in 1972 – after four terms in the Senate and thirty-two years in Congress – she retired to her home in Skowhegan and began planning for the establishment of the Margaret Chase Smith Library, which opened in 1982. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989 by President George H.W. Bush, she died at the age of 97 on May 29, 1995.

Says Delly Beekman, President of The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc., “Margaret Chase Smith was not simply a woman or a politician. She believed strongly in what was right, and put her words into action. The result is a model of a Junior Leaguer who, like Eleanor Roosevelt and Julia Child and other notable former League members, fulfilled Mary Harriman’s legacy of Junior League volunteers making a lasting community impact.”

Cornelia Fort, Pilot Cornelia Fort was an unlikely candidate to be the first Ameri-can woman to die on active military duty. Born into a wealthy family in Nashville, the oldest of five children. A debutante. Sarah Lawrence graduate. Member of the Junior League of Nashville. Destined for a quiet life.

But Cornelia Fort wanted to fly, and fly she did. She took her first flying lesson in 1940, shortly after her father died and

she soon became first female flight instructor in Nashville.

Page 38: JLNVB eTIDEings Magazine

In 1941, she took a job in Fort Collins, CO as a flight instructor with the Civilian Pilots Training Program, established under then President, Franklin Roosevelt. Later that year, she was hired to teach defense workers, soldiers and sailors to fly on a U.S. military base in Honolulu. There, flying on the morning of December 7, 1941, she was a witness to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

In 1942, she joined a select group of women aviators in what would become known as the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS), charged with piloting planes newly off the assembly line to military bases across the U.S., freeing up male servicemen to engage in active combat.

On a delivery mission to Love Field in Dallas, TX from her base in Long Beach, CA, she was killed in a mid-air collision. Cornelia Fort was 24 when she fell to her death from the skies above Mulberry Canyon, TX. A short life, but clearly an adventurous one; she died a pilot’s death.

Says Delly Beekman, President of The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc., “Even now, nearly 70 years later, Cornelia Fort’s life stands out as an example of one wom-an’s commitment to a larger purpose. Like many other League members, past and present, she consciously broke down barriers while making an impact with what they do.”

Best of all, they SUPPORT THE JLNVB!
