THE SUCCESS OF the Range RoverEvoque and Land Rover Freelander 2 hashad a major effect on production at JaguarLand Rover’s Halewood manufacturingplant, located on the outskirts of Liverpool.

An increase in demand meant thatthe factory began 24-hour production, introducing an extra shift in mid-2012.The workforce has also increased to over4,500, which is three times the number

of employees in 2010.The Land Rover Freelander 2 started

production here in 2006 and a new LandRover Experience off-road facility wasbuilt next to the plant to showcase the4x4 ability of the new vehicle.

Over £230m has been invested inHalewood between 2010 and 2013,primarily for Range Rover Evoqueproduction, and includes a £5m storage

facility ‘kipper rack’, which was critical inenabling Halewood to move to 24-hourproduction. The plant also has its ownbody press shop and paint shop.

The Halewood plant has received anumber of awards in recognition of itsgrowth, investment and contribution tothe local economy, especially sincethe successful launch of the RangeRover Evoque in 2011.

THE SOLIHULL PRODUCTION planthas been the home of Land Rover formore than 65 years and is also JaguarLand Rover’s largest site with over 6,000employees, who are all busy building thecompany’s unique blend of functional utilityand premium SUVs.

The vast 300-acre site is where theDefender, Discovery 4, Range Rover andRange Rover Sport are made and is thecentre for the world’s largest capacityautomotive aluminium plant. Facilities atSolihull include stamping, body-in-white,paint shop, trim and nal assembly,

JAGUAR LAND ROVER’S virtual innovation centrebrings together state-of-the-art virtual and high-endvisualisation technologies. This increases the efciency

of the product development process – resulting infaster time to market, and less investment in physicalprototypes – and helps us to achieve more robust resultsthan traditional physical engineering, design and testing.

The Virtual Reality Ergonomics laboratory is adedicated ergonomics facility, using virtual realitysimulations to optimise vehicle interior ergonomicsand manufacturing or dealer servicing processes. Itis equipped with two head-mounted displays whichenable the user to be totally immersed in the vehicleenvironment, as well as digital motion-capturetechnology to help optimise vehicle ingress/egressor manual processes.

Another key innovation in Virtual Realisation is JaguarLand Rover’s driving simulator, which was introduced in

2013 to support the development of driving dynamics andnoise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance.Thisenables engineers developing new chassis conceptsand systems to test the performance of the proposeddesign in a realistic driving environment with typicalJaguar or Land Rover driving positions. This capabilityoffers engineers a more comprehensive pre-prototypedevelopment phase and faster issue resolution.

    ENGINEERINGVEHICLES IN T HEVIRTUAL WORLD

JAGUAR LAND ROVER began utilising 3D printingtechnology in 1992 and now operates one of the UKlargest installed 3D printing capabilities. 3D printingenables functional prototypes to be produced in a vaof materials directly from a virtual design. Traditionaprototype parts took weeks or months to produce; insome circumstances 3D printing has reduced this toa matter of hours.

Jaguar Land Rover uses four different 3Dprinting technologies; Selective Laser Sintering,Stereolithography, Polyjet and Fused DepositionModelling. Through these technologies in excess of50,000 components and models are produced eachyear. It is possible to print parts up to almost a metrelong, meaning large components such as interiordoor trims or rear diffusers, as seen on the F-TYPE Coupé, can be printed in a timeframe that would beunachievable by conventional methods.

Many of the 3D printed parts are tted directly to

prototype vehicles which are sent around the world ftest and development purposes. The variety of matethe rapid prototyping department offers allows enginto tailor their prototype part to suit the test environme

3D printing over the last 22 years has become anessential tool and touches every aspect of the producreation process, from early design iterations througto engineering prototypes and on to manufacturingaids on the production line at all of Jaguar LandRover’s manufacturing facilities.

    OUR HISTORY

The origins of Jaguar can be traced back to a companythat began by making motorcycle sidecars in 1922. TheSwallow Sidecar Company, co-founded by William Lyons, later started building automobiles and moved to Coventry, switching its name to Jaguar after the Second WorldWar. It produced premium saloons and sports vehicles, including the legendary XK120.

Around this time, Rover started to develop a new all-terrain vehicle, designed by Maurice Wilks. Lightweightand rustproof, the rst Land Rover was clad in aluminium

alloy, due to the post-war steel shortage. It introduced4x4 capabilities to road vehicles and was soon adoptedby a wide variety of users from farmers to explorers.

Jaguar’s reputation was enhanced around the world byits motorsport success in the 1950s, winning the Le Mans24 Hours race no less than ve times in that decade –

twice with a C-Type in 1951 and 1953, and then with aD-Type in 1955, 1956 and 1957. In 1961 the companylaunched what became perhaps the most iconic sportsvehicle of all time, the E-Type.

To meet an increasing demand for recreationaloff-roaders, the Range Rover made its debut i n 1970.Then, as the Range Rover became seen as more

upmarket, the Land Rover Discovery was launchedin 1988 as a third model in the range.

Meanwhile Jaguar merged with a succession ofmajor manufacturers in the British automotive industry, then became independent again in the 1980s beforebeing purchased by Ford in 1989.

Land Rover was bought by BMW in 1994, whichexpanded the range further by introducing theFreelander. Land Rover then re-joined Jaguar underFord ownership in 2000, with the two companiesbecoming ever more closely linked over the nextfew years, sharing engineering knowledgeand facilities.

In 2008, the two were bought by Tata Motors, India’sbiggest vehicle maker, and ofcially joined together

as one company in 2013. Sales and prots have

risen year on year since 2009. As for the future, Jaguar Land Rover is focused

on sustainable and protable growth, expanding

both its product range and presence around theworld and investing heavily in new products andadvanced technologies to serve its growing globalcustomer base.

JAGUAR LAND ROVER is a company that brings together two much-loved, highly prestigiousBritish vehicle brands. After Tata Motors acquired Jaguar and Land Rover in 2008, it unitedthe two marques into a single company whose success has ourished, with memorablevehicles and innovative technologies that add to a long-lasting legacy.
