JMCOverview
TheSchoolofJournalismandMassCommunication(JMC)atKentStateUniversityisanationallyaccreditedschoolinNortheastOhio,preparingundergraduateandgraduatestudentsforsuccessfulcareersinbroadcastandmultimedianews,photoandmagazinejournalism,advertising,digitalmediaproduction,andpublicrelations.Ouracademicprogramsarestudent-centered,ourcurriculumishighlyrelevant,ourstudentsarenationallyrecognized,andourgraduatesareleadingallaspectsofthemediaandcommunicationindustries.
NationalAccreditation.JMCisoneofonly118programsofjournalismandmasscommunicationintheworldaccreditedbytheAccreditingCouncilonEducationinJournalismandMassCommunication(ACEJMC),andtheonlyaccreditedschoolofjournalismandcommunicationinNortheastOhio.Originallyaccreditedin1965,JMChassustainedaccreditationformorethan50years.Accreditationsignifiesthataprogrammeetsrigorousnationalstandardsforexcellence,asevaluatedbypeersandpractitionersinthefield.TheSchool’sPublicrelationsprogramreceivedCEPRcertificationin2016,oneofonly33intheUnitedStatesandfourinternationallytohavethatdesignation.
UndergraduateDegreePrograms.JMCoffersmajorsthatpreparestudentsforcareersintherapidlychangingmediaandcommunicationindustries.TheUniversity'scorecurriculumgivesstudentsastrongbackgroundintheliberalartstocomplementJMC'sprofessionaltraining.Aspartofthecourseworkofallmajors,studentsmustcompleteprofessionalinternshipsintheirfieldsofstudy.Anaward-winningindependentStudentMediaandstudentorganizationsalsobringtheprofessionalworldintotheSchool.JMCoffersstudentsaselectionofspecializedmajorswithconcentrationsinadvertising,digitalmediaproduction,journalismandpublicrelations,allofwhichleadtoaBachelorofScienceDegree.
GraduatePrograms.JMCisabouttoembarkonanewvisionforgraduateeducationinourSchool.Currently,JMCoffersavarietyofcourseswithinthreeareasofstudyinthegraduateprogram:MediaManagement,PublicRelations,andReportingandEditing.Thegraduateprogramsaredesignedtogivestudentsasolidbackgroundinpreparationforaprofessionaloracademiccareer.Withsmallclasssizes,studentsareabletolearnfromtheirprofessorsandfromtheexperiencesoftheirfellowclassmates;manyofwhomareworkingmediaprofessionals.
HelpingStudentsSucceed.Withsome985undergraduateandmorethan125graduatestudents,thereisnotypicalJMCstudent.JMCiscommittedtoprovidingstudentswiththesupportsystemsnecessarytostayinschool,graduateontime,andachievetheirprofessionalaspirations.Proactivemeasuresinclude:focusedeffortsonrecruitmentandretention;relevantandrealcurricularandco-curricularexperiences;continualassessmentoflearningoutcomes;acommittedandaccomplishedfaculty;professionalacademicadvisors;acoordinatorofcareerservices;acoordinatorofdiversityinitiatives;andscholarshipsandmonetaryawards.
LearningEnvironment.JMCishousedinFranklinHall,amodern,multimediafacilitythatsetsthestandardforotherjournalismschools.ThefacilityfeaturesaHDdigitalTVstudio;amedianewsroomwhereprint,broadcast,andmultimediaintersect;anInternetradiostation;andclassroomsandmeetingspacesdesignedforcollaborationandhands-onlearningexperiences.FranklinHallispartofKentStateUniversity’siconicfrontcampuslocatedonHilltopDrive.The1926buildingunderwentanextensivetwo-yearrenovationandexpansionandreopenedin2007.

StrategicPlanImplementationandUpdate
Inthe2012-13academicyear,acomprehensiveStrategicPlanwasdevelopedforJMC.Theplanningprocessconsistedoffivephases:Phase1:Alignment;PhaseII:Discovery;PhaseIII:Assessment;PhaseIV:Prioritization;andPhaseV:Planning.Theoutcomeoftheplanningprocesswasacomprehensiveplanconsistingof10goals,eachwithmeasurableobjectives,supportedbyacollectionofspecificactioninitiatives.TheplanwaspresentedandapprovedbytheFACattheannualretreatinAugust2013.Sincetheimplementationoftheplan,significantprogresshasbeenmadeonmanyofthestrategicinitiativessupportingeachofthegoals.ThisprogresshasbeentrackedanddocumentedinannualprogressreportsthatweredistributedtotheFACinJuly2014,June2015andAugust2016.ThereportthatfollowsonthesepagesrepresentsthemostcomprehensiveupdateoftheStrategicPlansinceitwaspreparedin2013.

ASOAR(Strengths,Opportunities,AspirationsandResults)Analysisisaframeworkthatassistsanorganizationincollectiveplanningforitsmostpreferredfuture.
Strengths
Overallundergraduateenrollment,retention,andpersistenceratescontinuetheirsteadyincreaseeachyearforthepastthreeyears.
JMCreceivedfullreaccreditationin2015fromtheAccreditingCouncilonEducationinJournalismandMassCommunication(ACEJMC),continuingastheonlyaccreditedprograminNortheasternOhioandoneofonlythreeinOhio.TheSchoolwasincomplianceonallninestandards.
ThePublicRelationsprogramreceivedCEPRcertificationin2016.
Studentmediaandstudentorganizationsthatprovidehundredsofstudentswithhand-onexperiencefromdayonecontinuetobuildontheirnationalreputationthroughtheiraward-winningwork.
JMCfaculty’scommitmenttostudentsandtheirsuccessisunparalleled.
OverallendowmentfortheSchoolhasreachedarecord$8.5million,includingasignificantbequestforphotojournalismstudentsand$200,000raisedforthenewPromisingScholarAwardscholarshipsgiventoincomingfreshmanJMCstudents.
Academicadvising,nowprovidedtoeverystudent,andcareercounselingareservingrecordnumbersofstudentsandthenumberoforganizationsandstudentsattendingtheannualCareerExpoinClevelandhasgrowneachyear.
Allsequenceshavecompletelyupdatedtheircurriculatomakethemmorecurrentandrelevant.
JMC’scommitmenttodiversity,ledbytheDiversityandGlobalizationCommittee,isreflectedintheinitiativesdevelopedforfacultyandstaff,includingthelaunchanddevelopmentoftheStudentVoiceTeam(SVT),effortstorecruitanddevelopadiversefacultyandstudentpopulation,andafocusonprograms,awardsandrecognitionthatpromotediversity.
Opportunities
ConsistentwiththeUniversity’sStrategicRoadmap,continuetoestablishthenationalreputationforJMCbybuildingonhighprofileprograms,e.g.CenterforScholasticJournalismandCenterforEthicsandLaw,aswellasinitiativesrelatedtodiversity,globalizationandinnovativecurriculumandresearch.

Thecompletionoftheinitialphasesofthe2013StrategicPlanningprocess,PhaseI:DiscoveryandPhaseII:Assessment,resultedintheemergenceofseveralcommonthemesandunifyingprinciplesthatfueledandguidedthedevelopmentoftheplandocument.Theresultwasaforward-lookingplanconsistingof10majorgoalsthatarespecific,measurable,action-oriented,realistic,andtimesensitive.
Thegoalsinthisupdatedplan,revisedtoeight(8)goals,reflecttheprogressthathasbeenmadeonthevariousstrategicinitiativesinthe2013planaswellasaconsolidationofseveralgoalstobringmorefocusandpromotefollowthroughontheactioninitiativesassociatedwitheachgoal.
