Even there, the stories of his healing power were known. As he entered one of the ten villages on the shores of the Lake of Galilee, a group of men were hurrying toward him. In front was a man about Jesus' age. He started to run, holding his arms up in prayerful supplication. "Nnn-ma, Djuh, Djuh," the man strained to speak, bringing his hopeful face so close that Jesus could smell his breath. His friends filled in around them, explaining, "He is deaf and cannot speak clearly. He begs you to heal him." The deaf man's eyes were fervent with hope. Nearly all of Jesus' miracles had been performed among his own Jewish community. To heal this man, who was not a Jew, would emphasize that Jesus' message and preaching were for all people, not just the Jews. Yet, the revelation that he was the Messiah was for his disciples only, and even then he was revealing it by very slow degrees. The crowd now forming wanted to see the magician do his trick right there in front of them. Jesus, needed to have intimacy with his Father. So he decided to take the man aside and heal him privately. He led the jabbering deaf man away from the crowd. When alone, Jesus cradled the mans head in his hands and pushed his index fingers into the man's ears-as if he was opening a passageway into them. "Nnn-ma, Djuh, Djuh," the man stammered again, his eyes wild with excitement. His whole body began to tremble. Jesus lifted his eyes heavenward and gave up a loud groan. "Be opened," he commanded in a stern voice, still holding the man's head in his hands. Like water bursting through a broken dam, sound flooded the man's ears as he heard Jesus cry out, "Ephphatha!" Jesus spat and touched the man's tongue, releasing the impediment. The words he had been trying to say burst free on his tongue with crystal clarity. 'Heal me, Jesus," he said. Jesus smiled at him. "You are healed. But I ask you not to tell anyone about this." When they returned to the waiting crowd, the man could not contain his joy. He shouted to them. "I am healed. I can speak. Jesus has given me voice and now I hear!" Shrieks and shouts of amazement shot through the crowd as they saw the miracle before them. They began to clamor around Jesus, some with tears in their eyes. Jesus was carried along in the midst of the crowd as it flowed down the hill toward the village. There was no escape from them. As they were swept along, like two prisoners, Jesus and the healed man exchanged glances. Despite the joy of his new hearing and speech, the man turned away from Jesus, his eyes were filled with shame. The once-deaf man realized he had failed to do the only thing that Jesus had asked of him. Has Jesus performed a miracle in your life? All of us have prayed for a special intention. Unlike the man in the Gospel story we are not asked to "tell no-one about this." Instead we are invited to go out and preach to all nations, telling them about the good news of Jesus. This news is revealed in Scripture and in our own lives. When your prayers are answered it is God's love for you revealed. When there is a miracle in your life it is a continuation of the Gospel. "jNnn-ma, Djuh, Djuh!"Mark 7: 31-37

Jesus' travels had taken him out of Jewish territory into the northern communities of thegentiles, the pagans. Even there, the stories of his healing power were known. As he entered

one of the ten villages on the shores of the Lake of Galilee, a group of men were hurrying

toward him. In front was a man about Jesus' age. He started to run, holding his arms up inprayerful supplication.

"Nnn-ma, Djuh, Djuh," the man strained to speak, bringing his hopeful face so close thatJesus could smell his breath.

His friends filled in around them, explaining, "He is deaf and cannot speak clearly. Hebegs you to heal him." The deaf man's eyes were fervent with hope.

Nearly all of Jesus' miracles had been performed among his own Jewish community. To

heal this man, who was not a Jew, would emphasize that Jesus' message and preachingwere for all people, not just the Jews. Yet, the revelation that he was the Messiah was for his

disciples only, and even then he was revealing it by very slow degrees. The crowd now forming wanted to see the magician do his trick right there in front of

them. Jesus, needed to have intimacy with his Father. So he decided to take the man aside

and heal him privately. He led the jabbering deaf man away from the crowd. When alone,

Jesus cradled the mans head in his hands and pushed his index fingers into the man'sears-as if he was opening a passageway into them.

OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY CHURCH, UNION CITY, CALIFORNIA

The Festival is just 4 weeks away!

BIG FESTIVAL MEETING THIS THURSDAY

SEPTEMBER 9, 2012

We will have our first of two General Festival Meetings THIS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. This meetingis intended to start organizing our volunteers to help run this huge, complex event. If our volunteers attend both general meetings andfollow the instructions given at the meetings, the success of the Festival will be assured!

Who should attend this meeting? Attend if any of the following apply to you:• Those who worked on the festival last year, and plan to do so again this year.• Those who signed up to help somewhere (on tables at the Church, at the parish school) and haven't been called yet.• Those who signed up to help and have been called.• Both booth chairpeople and booth workers.• Those who have been thinking about working on the festival, but are not sure what it entails.• Any person who breathes at least once a day.

Hope to see you there!

THE INTERNATIONAL PILGRIM STATUE OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA TO VISIT OLR. The famous pilgrim statue has been at otherparishes in the Oakland Diocese, most notably at Holy Spirit in Fremont. It will be here at OLR on Sunday, September 23, from 4:00 to7:00 p.m. Be sure to save the date! We will publish a schedule of events in next week's Bulletin.

The statue was sculpted in 1947 by Jose Thedim. It has traveled continuously across the world, visiting over 100 countries. Manymiracles have been recorded from the travels. This statue has been seen and documented to have shed tears on many occasions.

A WORD OF "THANKS" TO OUR VOLUNTEER CHURCH CLEANERS. This week we would like to acknowledge cleaning Team #1,which will be cleaning our Church this Tuesday and Friday at 4:00 p.m. The members of this team are Gary Arroy and VeronicaMaldonado. We thank them for their hard work and dedication.

JOIN OUR TEAM IN THE "CLEAN UP" POSITION. Over the last couple of years volunteers have been cleaning our church-instead ofan employee or an outside janitorial service. This has saved us a considerable amount of money, not to mention the fact that ourvolunteers are doing an excellent job. Seems like we hit a "home run" on this one!

At this time it seems that we need more volunteers to come forward to fill in some empty spaces on the teams, as the teams havelost members here-and-there over the years.

So if this is your calling, consider joining the "big leagues" as a member of one of our cleaning teams. There are six teams, and eachteam cleans the church for a week, both on a Tuesday and a Friday, on a rotating basis. In effect, each team cleans the church a littleless than one week a month. Tasks include dry mopping the floors, washing the tile floors, dusting the pews, cleaning out pew bookracks, washing windows, vacuuming carpeted areas, cleaning restrooms, and throwing out trash and recyclables.

Please call our office at 510.471.2609 if you are interested. Thank you.
