A Reminder Of Who Am I & Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me?

Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

Learning the US Job Search Culture

The next group of slides will discuss things that I believe make the US job search culture different than many other job search cultures around the world. I only know the US culture from my own experience but want to share that cultural experience so that people who are not familiar with it can learn.

I will tell you the tip or idea and let you know why I like it to help you in dealing with the process.

Remember, I am by no means a professional and never claim to be. I am just giving you things as I see them to help you to see through the ‘fog’ and get ahead in your career.

I hope my ideas help you out and help me to end unemployment one person at a time.

In many cultures, people are taught to respect and to wait your turn but in the US, people have to go out and get what they want. It is important to be assertive and not feel that not waiting is disrespectful. It isn’t. You have to go for it and not look back.

Degrees from many foreign countries are not given the proper respect by recruiters of hiring managers. Maybe it is because these people are not familiar with the university names or what they are known for. I am not totally sure why but the best way to deal with this is to get certified in your field using worldwide certification credentials. If its worldwide, it is more of a standard and can be respected more because of that.

Look to live in a city that maybe is less competitive where your skills will stand out more. Some cities are very tough to break into some industries because of the competition in the job search. Why take that on when you can maybe look in a city that does not have as many people looking for jobs with your skill set. You may want to consider moving if you cannot establish yourself in a city.

For some reason, people don’t list that they know multiple languages. That is crazy. Having the ability to speak multiple languages is an asset. If it was me, I would list that on my resume and LinkedIn profile as I think it would help me to be considered for a job. Try it and see if it helps.

Make contact with networking groups that are from the country that you are from and try to meet as many people that you can from these groups. People in these groups understand what you need to go through to be a success in the US versus other countries. It never hurts to make networking contacts. You might as well make some with people who are familiar with what you would go through.

Apply to companies that are owned in the country that you come from. You will find that the culture in the company is probably more like a foreign work culture than you think as the management is from outside of the US. Look for companies like this as maybe you will feel more comfortable as that corporate culture is more familiar.

If you are shy and you are going to a networking event, bring a friend that is more of an extrovert. That way the extrovert will open the conversation for you which will allow you a spot to step in and take over. This is helpful for people who are worried about their command of the language.

Go to networking events that are put on by the professional organization group that you are a member of. These should be easier to work because the people you are talking to are the people in your industry which should allow for better conversations as there are many more common discussions. This should make you feel more comfortable overall.

Network aggressively with people you used to work with via meeting them for coffee and or lunches. This will keep your confidence up and help you to let the word out that you are looking. Maybe make a list of the people you want to meet with and start setting appointments with them. It can only help.

Go on to LinkedIn and aggressively write recommendations for former co-workers as maybe they will write them for you as well. This will build up your LinkedIn profile as well. LinkedIn will love when you recommend people as it shows that you are promoting goodwill and helping LinkedIn to grow. It will help your profile to be more popular and be seen by others.

Stick with it. You will have ups and downs absolutely. That said, the more you build your LinkedIn profile with updates and recommendations, meet people for lunch and coffee and network with people overall, you will be on your way. Remember, you are only looking for one job. Keep your focus and it will come.
