Getting The Upper Advantage No Matter The OddsBy: Anthony Hines

Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

The next group of slides will discuss things that I believe will help you deal with paranoia that comes with a job loss that sometimes stays with you even into your next job.

I will tell you the tip or idea and let you know why I like it to help you in dealing with the process.

Remember, I am by no means a professional and never claim to be. I am just giving you things as I see them to help you to see through the ‘fog’ and get ahead in your career.

I hope my ideas help you out and help me to end unemployment one person at a time.

Many times people take a job loss as some sort of a personal attack that the manager and/or the company plotted to do to destroy them.

This mentality is just noise that gets in the way when job searching.

In most cases, there were many other people that were affected by the layoff and it you think that there was a grand master plan to get rid of you and them, you are giving these people way too much credit. Basically, they are not that smart. G

Page 6: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 40 -- Paranoia Can Destroy Ya. --

Now I am not saying that you should not be emotional about the job loss. That is natural and healthy.

I am just saying for you to just channel that energy on getting your next opportunity. Keep your edge and be driven. That is awesome. Just instead of looking at the past, look forward and focus on what you can control which is the effort in getting your next opportunity. That is much more healthy and better for you overall.

Don’t you think that your energy would be better used getting a certification in order to show future hiring managers in interviews that you were doing something productive during your time in transition?

Check with your unemployment office and see if you are eligible for job loss training and look at LinkedIn for their LinkedIn Learning options. That is just two places to start with.

If you are not sure how to get started regarding certification training, reach out to the professional organization that manages the certification and ask them how to get started. Maybe they have a preparation program that people in transition can get into for a discounted rate. You never know. At least they will send you in the right direction and get you moving.

Join professional organizations that are in your field and get involved in their events.

Volunteer to help organize events and when at these events, network, network, network.

Remember, people get bonuses for referrals so there is something in it for them when you link to them on LinkedIn and ask them to put a good word in for you.

Join the organization’s mentoring program and when you do, ask for someone who has been unemployed so that they can relate to what you are going through. That will help you to keep a clear mind and not be as paranoid.

Page 10: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 40 -- Paranoia Can Destroy Ya. --

Stop worrying about if you will put someone out of their way and reach out to people you have worked with in the past to let them know that you are out of work.Get over yourself and kill the pride. People get jobs when they get help from people on the inside. Current employees know of upcoming opportunities before the public does. Maybe a contact can get you access in. Don’t come up reasons not to reach out. Just do it. What’s the worst case? They say no? Ok .. Next contact…

Get up early each day and exercise, stay busy and do something to get a routine. Too much idle time lets you think too much. Stop thinking and get moving. Take action to improve your skills, meet people and attend functions.

Staying busy keeps your mind clear and does not Allow you to get into a rut. Btw, if you properly exercise, you make improvements in your physical and mental state and what’s wrong with that?

Page 12: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 40 -- Paranoia Can Destroy Ya. --

Fact: The people that will help you the most are the ones that you know who have been unemployed. They have been there and know what you are going through. Keep in touch closely with them. They get it.

When I was unemployed, some of my closest friend hurt me the most in the things they said. Not because they meant to. Only because they didn’t know what to do as they have not been through it. Not persona. Just the way it is.

Page 13: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 40 -- Paranoia Can Destroy Ya. --

This is a speed bump in your career if you take control of what you can control, use contacts and tools available to you and stay with the program every day.

If you let self-doubt and pity to be your prevailing thought, it will own you and you will never get out of your own way.

You own your own career and its progress. You are responsible for you and not anyone else. I hope this makes sense.

Page 14: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 40 -- Paranoia Can Destroy Ya. --

Focus on small progress. Say meeting new people as you can or getting the word out to all you know and taking new online training as well as looking into new certifications as well as joining professional organizations and volunteering where you can as well as entering mentoring programs.

Yes, the above is a run-on sentence but if you think like that then every day you will take a small step which can help you get over that paranoid feeling and that worry/fear.

If you take action, you make progress. Basic but true.

Page 15: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 40 -- Paranoia Can Destroy Ya. --

Stay away from negative situations because you don’t have time to fix anything or anyone other than your own self. Sorry if I sound curt but I want you to understand that the the questioning mentality can slowly work on your confidence.

Stay with the program, cut out the noise and do small positive things on a daily basis to bring positive results.

Page 16: Job Search Survival Kit -- Part 40 -- Paranoia Can Destroy Ya. --

Getting your next opportunity may take some time but if you spend time and efforts improving yourself in small ways on a consistent basis, there is no limit to how awesome you will be for your next employer and when that happens, isn’t that the best payback that you can get for going through this process? See what I mean?
