Before the Fair ❏ Update your resume and LinkedIn Profile. ❏ Have your resume reviewed by one of our career advisors during Career XPRESS.

❏ Upload your resume onto Eagle Connect for employers to view.

❏ To highlight verbally what you can do for an employer quickly, develop a 30-second

“commercial.”

❏ Review employers in the directory, and research the ones you hope to speak with.

❏ Develop appropriate questions to ask employers and review “Job fair do’s and don’ts”.

❏ Prepare to dress professionally, check out the Clothes Closet in Career Services if you need help!

❏ Order your student business cards to hand out to employers at the Jobs and Internships Fair.

During the Fair❏ Bring 10-15 copies of your resume to leave with employers.

❏ Bring a pen and paper to write down employer contact information.

❏ Arrive at the very beginning as you may get complete attention of recruiter.

❏ Make eye contact, offer a firm handshake, smile and show enthusiasm.

❏ Ask for a business card from every representative with whom you speak

to help with thank-you notes.❏ Thank the recruiter for their time and let them know you are interested and plan to follow-up.

After the Fair❏ Follow-up with employers by sending a thank-you email or letter.

❏ Make a follow-up phone call to those employers you are really interested in.

❏ Most companies will tell you to apply online – do so as soon as possible after the fair.

❏ Send any materials that have been requested of you.

Jobs & Internships Fair Checklist

Research the companies and be prepared Explore organizations that will be participating in the fair prior to the event. Have several copies of your résumé to present to recruiters (if you need assistance with your resume, please have it critiqued during Career Express drop-in hours or attend a resume workshop). Take a pen and a pad of paper so that you may takenotes on information given to you by recruiters.

Dress professionally First impressions are extremely important! How you look and present yourself will make an impression. Professional attire is best.

Plan the attack! Upon entering the fair become familiar with the layout of the facility. Create your 30-second commercial that briefly highlights your background so the recruiter is aware of your unique qualities. Remember to smile and greet recruiters with a firm handshake.

Network Career fairs are an exciting and rare opportunity for contact with recruiters. Remember to collect business cards to follow-up regarding possible opportunities.

Follow-up It is important to send thank you notes to the recruiters that represent the companies in which you are most interested. Refresh their memories of your interaction and express your gratitude that they attended the fair. End by reiterating your interest in their organization.

Show up for the freebies Don’t approach an employer’s table just to receive its freebies, engage the recruiters in conversation regarding opportunities within their organization

Make it obvious you’re there for the extra credit Don’t announce that you are attending the Career Fair JUST for extra credit. Instead, network to build your contact base for possible employment prospects in the future

Dress like you’re going to the gym Don’t dress like you are going to the gym. You will be in a professional environment representing The College at Brockport. Dress appropriately for the occasion. If you have questions about what to wear, stop by career services. We are happy to help.

Limit your options Focus on companies rather than positions. Don’t eliminate companies because they are recruiting for positions outside your field; take the time to network with the recruiter in attendance and try to get the name of a hiring manager for your particular career field.

Be Silent Bob Don’t be afraid to speak with the recruiters, make eye contact, and greet with a firm handshake. The recruiters are there because they are interested in talking with students just like you.
