The patented Starrett Roofing Tape isdesigned to assist in laying out the twomost common roofing shingles.

When laying convential (traditional or 3-tab)shingles, use the black scale on the tapewith bond markings indicated with a circlearound the number. For dimensional(architectural) shingles, use the red scaleon the tape with bond markings indicatedwith a red oval around the number.

Using the pre-marked roofers blade, a gridis created using the two series of linearmeasurements: Course layout – markedvertically along the slope of the roof andbond layout – marked horizontally.

The roofing tape helps the roofer workmore efficiently and reduces errors.

Level UseTo get a correct reading with a level, both ends of the bubbleshould be viewed. If the gaps between the ends of the bubble andthe lines are unequal at any time, then they should be averagedout. The reason for this is temperature, which affects the size of thebubble. As a level is warmed the liquid expands, thereby reducingthe size of the bubble so that at true-level there will be gaps at bothends between the bubble and the reading lines. Conversely, if thetemperature is very cold, the bubble could expand and overlap thereading lines.

Excessive hand heat on the center of the level for an extendedperiod of time could expand the center, causing the workingsurface to become slightly convex and also create a tendency to spin on flat surfaces. This is more noticeable on very precise levels.

Any level can be checked for accuracy on any flat surfaceregardless of whether it is level or not. Simply put the level on thesurface and note the position of the bubble. Then reverse the level in the same spot. If the level is true, the bubble will be inthe same relative position both ways.

Some models, like our builders’ and contractors’ levels with the new adjustable and unbreakable vial system, have anadjustment that can be made on the job. The adjustment is easily made by moving the bubble back by one-half the total error.

Level Vial InformationThe accuracy of a level is dependent on the proper machining of the working surface, the straightness, and rigidity of theconstruction and the sensitivity of the level vial. Accuracies are veryoften specified in parts of degrees such as 10-second accuracy or43-minute accuracy. Technically, we are referring to the sensitivityof the level vial, but many interchange these terms. Since thismeans little to most people, we use the more practical definition ofinches per foot of elevation. For instance, a 10-second vialaccuracy means if the level is on an incline that is .0005� per foot,then the bubble on the vial will move .100� (slightly less than 1/8�).

There are three general types of level vials. Ground vials aregenerally used in precision levels; bent glass and plastic vials areused in most other levels.

Most level vials have just two lines spanning the length of thebubble because most users just want to know if something is levelor not.

The more precise levels have vials with a number of reading lineson each side of the bubble. All inch reading vial graduations are.100� apart. This will show the machinist in a very precise mannerhow level the equipment is.

Metric reading levels have vial graduations 2mm apart andaccuracies are usually described as millimeters per meter. This isan easy conversion to make, so we converted our inchspecifications to an understandable metric reading. Machinists onlyneed to know how far they are out of level if the bubble moves tothe next line.

Carpenters’ DividersNo. 92 Series6, 9� (150, 225mm)

These dividers combine rigidity, light weightand easy handling. The legs are forgedsteel, well-shaped, properly tempered andhighly polished. The adjustable point maybe quickly removed and a common pencilinserted in its place. The No. 92-9 9�(225mm) size is designed to accommodatea standard long pencil, especially useful forcarpenters. No. 88 Ball Points may be usedwith the No. 92 Series.

The sturdy construction of the joint,combined with the quadrant, eliminatesside deflection of the legs. A quadrantadjusting nut permits fine-adjustments forclose measurements. A check nut locatedbetween the legs locks the legs firmly afterthe proper adjustment has been made. Thisfeature prevents the legs from moving inand out with the grain on wood whenscribing, or sliding off rough spots whenscribing on metals.

The Starrett No. 85 extension dividers areexceptionally rigid although light in weightand easy to handle. The head is made offorged steel. The hardened points are wellshaped and bent slightly so they can be rotated and brought closer together if desired.

The sturdy construction of the joint,combined with the quadrant that projectsthrough the legs and is frictionally lockedby a knurled clamp nut, eliminates sidedeflection of the legs. A quadrant adjustingnut permits fine-adjustments for closemeasurements. A check nut locatedbetween the legs firmly locks the legs afterproper adjustment has been made. Thisfeature prevents the legs from moving inand out with the grain on wood whenscribing, or sliding off rough spots whenscribing on metal.
