Can you provide technical support to a biomarker research project funded by Innovate UK in partnership with a major diagnostics company? Do you have an active interest in biomarkers with relevant laboratory experience?

The Clinical and Biomedical Proteomics Group is well established in the area of biomarker and therapeutic target discovery and translation, particularly relating to diseases of the kidney. You will be working in a multidisciplinary team with expertise in proteomic sciences, statistics, clinical biochemistry and biomarker assays, oncology, pathology and renal medicine with members working within the Section of Biomarkers and Therapy and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

You will have an active interest in biomarkers and have significant relevant laboratory experience. The ability to plan, manage your time effectively and work under pressure is essential, along with excellent interpersonal, communication, and team working skills.

What does the role entail?

As a Research Technician your main duties will include: Carrying out a research project with appropriate supervision, liaising with

academics and researchers to perform techniques and protocols as appropriate;

Managing and prioritising your day-to-day workload to ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner;

Maintaining a proactive approach to the research project, inputting ideas as appropriate;

Providing regular written progress reports, preparing and collating results for interpretation by members of the research group using spreadsheets and graphs;

Responsibility for regular stock-taking, ordering, goods receipting and stock management for the research project and assisting with this for the group;

Routine maintenance checks and report faults; Instructing junior technical staff in laboratory techniques, basic operations and

laboratory management as directed; Supervising other technical staff/students as appropriate and providing cross-

cover for other technicians working on related projects and the sample processing team;

Maintaining a tidy and safe working environment in compliance with Health & Safety regulations, maintaining health and safety records and develop risk assessments for new and existing protocols;

Liaising with other members of the research group and wider Institute especially on Health and Safety matters;

Being prepared to work outside normal working hours according to the needs of the projects.

These duties provide a framework for the role and should not be regarded as a definitive list. Other reasonable duties may be required consistent with the grade of the post.

You will be reporting to Prof Roz Banks, Professor of Biomedical Proteomics, and Helen Sewell, Senior Technician.

What will you bring to the role?

As a Research Technician you will have: A degree level, BTEC higher level or equivalent qualification, or equivalent

experience in a life science field; Relevant general laboratory experience; Practical experience in processing and/or analysing clinical samples Understanding and practical experience of running ELISA immunoassays

(including quality control aspects, validation and analysis of results) Knowledge and some experience of working to and designing or editing SOPs

The ability to plan your own work schedule and manage time effectively, dealing with varied technical tasks under pressure in a range of environments;

The proven ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team;

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with attention to detail and including experience of report writing;

Working knowledge and experience of health and safety requirements in the laboratory setting and compliance with the Human Tissue Act;

Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and basic statistics packages.

You may also have: Experience of designing and validating new immunoassays ; A willingness to take advantage of training opportunities and develop

professional competence; Experience of using multiplex assays e.g. Luminex or Randox; Previous working experience of other protein analysis techniques such as

Western blotting.
