Jock Marshall Reserve is a three hectare ecological sanctuary and a world-class environmental research facility located at Monash Clayton, highly valued for its natural and cultural importance. The reserve was established in 1961 by the Founding Chair of Zoology, Professor A.J. ‘Jock’ Marshall who passionately advocated to enhance the campus’s native environment against European landscaping ideals of the time. Since then, the Reserve has been progressively renewed with the planting of native trees, expansion of the lake and establishment of islands to support a rich ecosystem of bird species, aquatic life and other fauna. The Reserve is identified in the Monash Masterplan as a key ecological asset and is home to a rich ecosystem comprising of diverse native and introduced flora and fauna species. An award-winning 200m long elevated nature walk and footbridge by Urban Initiatives, extends above the Reserve, protecting the fragile ecosystem below and providing safe access between the campus and Blackburn Road. Previously closed to the public, the reserve is now accessible to the community via the nature walk, which provides exposure to the research activities that are being undertaken within. The Nature Walk delivers a new campus entrance, offering an engaging pedestrian entry onto campus for the broader community, and from university properties along Blackburn Road.
