SLEEP SPAN / Art Suite 338

Arctic life is one of contrast; the warmth of it's inhabitants in the coldest of climates. Sleep Span envelops

contrast. Structurally precise ice I-beams frame the bridge under which you may take shelter and sleep.

Appreciate the industrial elegant lines of the ice bridge mixed with the rough, almost romantic accessories of

ice oil drums and cardboard boxes. Snow bricks allow the light to peep through the ice wall. Lift your ears to

the Arctic winds and rest; enjoy being soothed by the ambient sounds from the bridge's vibrations.

NIDA RADIO WAVE BRIDGEART IN CONTEXT, 2011

Commission: TRACES, Nida Art ColonyWelcome to Bridgeland! TRACES Inter-Format Opening Ceremonial Event, May 4th 2011Materials: Radio, Radio Signals, Speakers, Seaside, Flag, Champagne, Fire, SaunaComposition Length: 30'Location: Nida Seaside, Curonian Spit, Lithuania

Radio signals collected from the seaside at Nida on Easter Saturday, 23rd April between 8-8:30am. Signals recorded and mixed with flying bridge composition played back at the same location in Nida. One of the ideas that inspired the creation of Singing Bridges is Edgard Varese's unrealised symphony Espace (1929-1941) which he imagined performed simultaneously in and from all capitals of the world:

"(Bridge) Voices in the sky, as though magic, invisible hands turning on and off the knobs of fantastic radios, filling all space, criss-crossing, overlapping, penetrating each other, superimposing, colliding, crashing." The radio becomes a signal bridge across the Baltic out to the rest of the world.

WELCOME TO BRIDGELAND!ART IN CONTEXT, 2010 Commission: Lowsalt for Glasgow International Festival of Visual Arts 2010Materials: Suspension Bridge, Audio, Ceremonial Ribbon, Speakers, Double Bass, LaptopMusicians: Jodi Rose, Guy Veale & Dave TunstallProduction/Technical realisation: Jodi Rose, LowsaltComposition Length: 40'Location: South Portland St Suspension Bridge, Glasgow, UK

Welcome to Bridgeland! is the ceremonial opening of Bridgeland, on the South Portland St Suspension Bridge, April 23rd for GI 2010. Artist Jodi Rose conducts a site-specific musical performance and celebration with bridge sounds. Amplifying the cables and bridge structure, with local collaborators Guy Veale and Dave Tunstall, the Bridge becomes an instrument in an on-site intervention taking us on a mysterious journey through a suddenly unfamiliar urban landscape.

Opening a space between where we live and where we dream, suspended across the threshold into another state... a psycho-geographic performance exploring mythology and poetics.

NORSE BRIDGE APOCALYPSEMYTHOLOGICAL COMPOSITION, 2010

Commission: Tiramizu Record Label & TransculturesMaterials: Stereo Audio Composition and Pencil Drawing Composition Length: 9'Location: Week #2, Tiramizu, Nice

Composition based on the bridge in Norse mythology: “Bifrost is the bridge between Asgard (the realm of gods) and Migard (the realm of mortals). The gods ride daily over the great rainbow bridge. When the bridge collapses, the world will end.”

Made in ixi quarks using only sounds recorded with contact microphones on bridge structures.

The bridge looks like a sound wave in deep blue. Based on technical plans of the Pont du Chardronnet in Besancon, Norse mythology also inspired the drawing. The Gods riding daily across the bridge and the ultimate disintegration of the world are referenced in the symbolic representation of movement and the vibrations across the bridge, eventually released from their structural function as the apocalypse arrives.

PUNK BRIDGE, PREPARED BRIDGE & FUTURIST DREAM BRIDGEART IN CONTEXT, 2009

Commissioned by Sonorama-Besançon Paysage Sonore, Besançon, France Materials: 8 Channel site specific audio installation, intervention and performanceLocation: Pont Battant, Pont de la Republique & Pont du Chardronnet

Pont Battant – ‘Punk Bridge’

‘That bridge goes to the dark side of Besançon‘, says my local history informant… Pont Battant echoes with echoes of a rumoured Einstürzende Neubauten concert held on, near or underneath it in 1989. Local post-industrial punk noise band ‘Elwis Presley Lieben Toten’ are invited to create a live concert under the bridge in the spirit of the original legendary Neubauten gig. Crossing over the bridge you hear a mixture of live and historic noise and silence, from the past to the present, or maybe the future…

Futurist Dream Bridge (Sonorama-Besançon, France)

Bridges from around the world are played along the Pont de la République in a Global Bridge Symphony. Listeners walking along the bridge create your own mental orchestration of the symphony, with a different location playing on each speaker. Traverse sonic bridges between Bangkok, Brisbane, Glasgow, London, New York, Rotterdam, Singapore and Sydney.

Prepared Bridge (Sonorama Besancon, France)

A bridge prepared for playing. Acoustic, metal and wooden ‘instruments’ are added to the railings to invite stroking, percussion and improvisation. Live amplification of the structure, for playing acoustic architecture. Sonic intervention and experimentation on the bridge by visitors is encouraged.

GLOBAL BRIDGE SYMPHONYART IN CONTEXT, 2008

ISEA2008 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTRONIC ART SINGAPORE5 Channel Video Installation, National Museum of Singapore, SGCommission: Artist in Residence Juried Exhibition National Museum of Singapore

Anyone who has walked along a large bridge will know that bridges make sounds – what we can't hear is the tension of the cables in the atmosphere, which create sonic vibrations across a range of frequencies. Understanding these sounds as a form of music, the artist recorded the song of her first bridge in 1995, and has been engaged with the Singing Bridges project ever since, capturing the unique voices of bridges all over the world. Rose sees each bridge as a musical instrument, and collectively the bridges she has recorded as urban temples, each one an instrument in the Global Bridge Symphony, linking together the music of bridges internationally. The artist worked in collaboration with bridge engineers and artists in Singapore using sensor monitoring equipment to explore the technical, philosophical and musical aspects of the cable vibrations through local and global transmissions.

BRIDGE GUARD RADIO DIARYART IN CONTEXT, 2005/06

Bridge guards cross and move boundaries.Bridge guards build virtual bridges that help to protect the real bridge.

Fourth bridge guard for the Maria Valeria Bridge, Danube between Sturovo (Slovakia) and Esztergom (Hungary), Nov 2005 - Feb 2006

"In 2001 the Mária Valéria bridge between Štúrovo (Slovakia) and Esztergom (Hungary) was reopened. This bridge was destroyed and unusable for a longer time than it was connecting the two towns, and kept the memory of the World War II alive for 57 years. This was the second destruction of the bridge built in 1895. Already between 1919 and 1926 it was out of service. The rebuilt bridge deserves to be saved from further destruction by people. To this aim, mental protection is more important than physical protection. As long as the mental connection between people is intact, the bridge is not endangered."

Next to the work on his or her own project, the most important duty of the Bridge Guard consists of observing the bridge every day and recording observations in the Bridge Log.

MEGA BRIDGE, BANGKOKCONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING, 2006

Commission: VSL Engineering R&D, Bangkok Collaboration: Jodi Rose with Mari Keski-Korsu & Lisa DuffLocation: Industrial Ring Road, Bangkok, Thailand

Workers install the cables on the bridge and tensioning the wires inside the pylon

Invited by chief Engineer, Pelle Gustavsson to record the sound of the cables as the bridge is being built. He wants to hear it 'played like Jimi Hendrix' and gives me access to the construction site for a week, sending his R&D Engineer to accompany me and discover if there is a practical application to the tuning of the cables. VSL International has developed the DeMON sensor array vibration monitoring system, yet to be installed on a bridge: ideal for the Global Bridge Symphony.

Crane ride to the top of the 250m high pylon. Engineer Rashid listens to the cables.

SINGING BRIDGESART IN CONTEXT

Date: 1995 - 2013 (ongoing)Commissions: Arts Victoria, Music for the Future; Australia Council for the Arts New Media Arts Fund, ABC Radio, ISEA Singapore, Sonorama-Besancon, City Sonics, Kone Foundation.Materials: Cable-Stayed/Suspension Bridges, Contact Microphones, Audio RecorderComposition Length: 60 minutesLocations: Sydney, Mekong Delta, Rotterdam, Helsinki, Berlin, London, New York, Brisbane, San Francisco, Glasgow, Bangkok, Paris, Ljubljana, Singapore, Vienna, Besançon, Bangor, Maastricht

Singing Bridges is an urban sonic sculpture, listening to the cables of bridges around the world as instruments in a musical symphony. Echoing telecommunications wires circling the earth, the cables of suspension and stay-cabled bridges reverberate with sounds, each structure creating a unique texture, rhythm and sonic environment. The sound of the cables is the voice of the bridge, singing concrete music, the vibrations telling stories from the life and memory of the structure.

Recordings made in 1995, then 2002 – 2013Singing Bridges: Vibrations/Variations CD released 2005
