...We arrived the Odumakins’ home hoping to be able to convince her to wear a skirt and blouse or a dress for this photo shoot but the 2013 winner of the International Women of Courage Award would have none of it. We met a woman totally consumed by a passion to fight for the oppressed and the voiceless in the society. Having been beaten and her skirt torn by security operatives while leading a protest in 1993, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin has vowed never to wear a dress until “we have a Nigeria that works”.

An endorsement by Michelle Obama puts you on the world stage. That’s where our own Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin now operates. For, as she lifts up her plaque, so has she been lifted to a level that far exceeds her contemporaries in the human rights community.

Her recognition is well deserved. Not the ‘gbogbounshe’ awards that have been given to cronies back home. This is a woman who fights for human rights and democracy side-by-side with men; squaring shoulders, trading and ducking punches on picket lines to make a case for you and me.

While many of us are ensconced in comfy homes, Joe has been in detention forty times. Locked up for daring to say: ‘aluta continua’. But spunk pays off, so she now operates at the level of world leaders and we applaud.

We congratulate her and partake in her recognition. Jemi Ekunkunbo spent a few hours with her. With much persuasion, we got the figure-to-die-for celeb to pose for our camera. Read the interview on pp. 10 to 12.

On our beauty pages, we x-rayed the life style of some prominent women across the age spectrum – from 30 to 70. See what we found on pp. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Have a great week!

P.S.Last week’s cover of former President Ibrahim Babangida was captured for us by the lens of celebrity photographer, Bamiyo Iselema Emina.

I use a very popular product for my skincare. I use Flori Roberts face wash for my face. I also use Forever Living cucumber bar that is

very good. I think they make good products like the aloe gel. I have been using it for years. For cream, I use the same cream I use for face for body. I use Fair and White, the blue one with Vitamin C. It helps to keep my face and body even. A young model taught me to use same cream for face and body. I’ve been doing that for a long time now and it works for me.

There are people who would have different creams for different parts of the body. I am a creative person, so I don’t have

time for that. Those who love fashion and beauty so much and Keep different creams for different parts of the body still age and you’d know when you see them. What is important for me is to grow old gracefully. If you are not careful with some of these creams, they will mess up your skin. I won’t take any cream from you if you tell me it is mixed because I don’t know what you mixed in it. I stick with the products I use and most of them, I have been using for years. If something is good for me, I find it very difficult to try something new.

I do go to the spa. When I’m in Abuja, I go to the Moroccan Spa. I do this once in three months or when I receive it as a gift from a friend. But I do have my own sauna and I have my own Masseur who comes home to massage me once a week. I stand most of the time I am working and when I get stiff and tired, I stand on my feet massager. I have that in the office. I understand my body so when my body says I’m tired I do something. I don’t over do anything. If I feel like a salt bathe, I just scrub myself and go into the sauna for a few minutes. I do this more for health reasons than for beauty. One other thing I do is, if I feel I have eaten too much and do feel bloated, I take Moringa seeds and it cleanses my whole system and gets rid of waste.

I have changed my diet over time, especially with age. Now, I eat everything in moderation and try to cut out fat from my food. When I take sausage now, I take chicken or turkey sausage. I try to avoid beef and pork because they have a lot of cholesterol.

BREAKFAST

I eat lunch between 4p.m. and 5p.m., maximum 7p.m. so that it can digest. I take pounded yam or Semovita, but very little. I have a measuring cup that I use. I love jollof rice but it’s not good for me so, I told my cook that whenever I call for more rice, he should go and not come back. I mean that he should just ignore me. I don’t snack any more. When I go to parties, I take mixed fruits.

There is a place called ‘Makie’ in Ikeja, Lagos. It’s run by a Japanese woman. I crashed my weight from 108kg to 90kg in seven months. They use steaming to reduce the body mass which is mostly water. If you steam, you sweat the fluid out. I go to Eko Sauna three days a week and the Japanese place another three days a week.

JOE OKEI-ODUMAKIN- Consumate Fighter

We arrived the Odumakins’ home hoping to be able to convince her to wear a skirt and blouse or a dress for this photo shoot but the 2013 winner of the International Women of Courage Award would have none of it. We met a woman totally consumed by a passion to fight for the oppressed and the voiceless in the society. Having been beaten

and her skirt torn by security operatives while leading a protest in 1993, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin has vowed never to wear a dress until “we have a Nigeria that works”.

Born in Zaria on July 4th, 1966, the native of Delta State grew up in Ilorin, Kwara State where she had almost all her formal education. A product of Queen Elizabeth Secondary School, Ilorin, Joe obtained her first degree in English Education from the University of Ilorin in 1987. After her national youth service in the eastern part of the country, she returned to the University of Ilorin for her Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1990.

Thirsty for more knowledge, she crowned her studies by completing her doctorate in History and Policy of Education in 1996.

For her convictions and often speaking out against acts of injustice especially by people in authority, she has been in and out of detention several times.

She is currently the President, Women Arise for Change Initiative and Campaign for Democracy, two platforms on which she leads activism for change.

Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin is the recipient of several awards. In 2007 alone, she bagged ‘’Hero of Democracy and good governance’’ award by United Nations of Youth Nigeria, and “The Defender of Women’’ award by Human Rights Now.

Also, did you know that hot water freezes faster than cold water? So don’t be afraid to pop your strong green tea into the freezer (in ice cube trays) while it’s still steamy. And keep a few of these ice cubes around at all times – you never know when one might come in handy!

6/$9(1'(52,/Generally, I don’t think you should use undiluted essential oils on your skin. But common thought is that both lavender and tea tree essential oils are okay to use “neat,” if they are used rarely (otherwise, you could end up with an itchy UHDFWLRQDQGRQO\WRDGGUHVVDVSHFL¿FSUREOHP

In other words, don’t go rubbing essential oils, without diluting them, all over your skin. But a drop of lavender or tea tree on an uncomfortably large pimple might be all the pimple remedy you’ll need. For the record, I do use straight lavender or tea tree on blemishes every so often, and they do work extremely well. (Caveat, of course, is that not everything works for everyone the same way).

(**:+,7(6Egg Whites: I have to be honest here; this one is not my favorite. Mainly because you don’t want to waste an entire egg just to put a dab or three of the egg white on your face.
