Dred Scott Trio (Tuesday) This longtime working band, led by the sly pianist-raconteur Dred Scott, recently released “Going Nowhere” (Ropeadope), a goodshowcase for its puckish but aggressive take on postbop aerodynamics. The trio’sacclaimed weekly residency here has ended, after a productive six years — but thisone-nighter kicks off a new one, the last Tuesday of every month. nate chinen, NEWYORK TIMES

The Dred Scott Trio gives off an intimate, anything-can-happen vibe...sometimesswinging hard and sometimes careening out of control. The feeling of ramshacklespontaneity...is something of a front for sophisticated, multi-segmented piano triocompositions. Philip Booth, RELIX

“Pianist Dred Scott uses an irreverent veneer to disguise old-fashioned jazzscholarship, which buttresses his rich, well-rounded intonation and flair forphrasing.” brit robson EMUSIC

“The hard-swinging group never gets too deep, which might actually be a goodthing: Their music has the buoyant groove of gospel and the charming shuffle ofthe Big Easy on parade.” NEW YORK MAGAZINE

Back to the Future with Dynamic Vibraphone Master from New Orleans. InPerson & Live at Nighttown with Quartet!

Featuring: Jason Marsalis-vibes, Austin Johnson-piano, Will Goble-bass, & DavePotter-drums.

“21st Century Trad Band”, the newest record from the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet, in thefollow-up to last year´s successful release, “In a World of Mallets”, the group expands onits sound and musical possibilities. This record proves that the tradition doesn´t have tostay in the past. Tradition can indeed be brought into the future.

From a tender young age it was clear that Jason Marsalis had what it took to be great.Jason is the son of pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis and his wife Dolores, and theyoungest sibling of Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo. Together, the four brothers and theirpatriarch Ellis, comprise New Orleans venerable first family of jazz.

Ellis and Dolores began to cultivate Jason’s interest in music at age three, with thepurchase of a toy set of drums. By age six, not only had Jason gotten his first real drumset, but he was also taking lessons from the legendary New Orleans drummer JamesBlack. Jason was progressing so rapidly as a drummer that in 1984 his father started usinghim consistently on engagements.

Shortly after graduation from arts high school in 1995, Marsalis ascended to the drumthrone of a new group lead by virtuoso pianist and former sideman for Wynton Marsalis,Marcus Roberts. Despite a demanding touring schedule with Roberts. It was in 1998 thatJason co-founded the Latin-jazz group Los Hombres Calientes.

In 2000, Jason left the Los Hombres group to attain more focus with the Marcus Robertstrio. It was around that time the Marsalis started to play the vibraphone on gigs in NewOrleans. It was in April of 2008 that Marsalis was asked to play the vibraphone with thelegendary Lionel Hampton Orchestra at the Ogden Museum in New Orleans. In fall of thatyear, he was on a double-bill tour with Double-wide and a jazz-fusion group from Denton,Texas, Snarky Puppy. After that tour, Marsalis would make guest appearances with thegroup and has developed a following amongst the groups fans.

In 2009, the Marsalis Family would receive the NEA Jazz Masters award. In June of thatyear, the family would appear at the White House and the Kennedy Center to do a tributeshow to their father. Later that year, Marsalis would release his first new album in 9 yearsand his debut album on vibes, “Music Update”.

2013 was a monumental year in which Marsalis released his next recording as a leader onvibes entitled “In a World of Mallets”. The album went to number 1 on the CMJ RadioCharts and also won an Offbeat Magazine award, a New Orleans music magazine, for bestContemporary Jazz Album. There was even recordings from the drum kit as Marcus Robertsreleased three recordings that year. Two with Wynton Marsalis, “Together Again – In theStudio” and “Together Again – Live in Concert”, and the ambitious original trio suite fromRoberts, “From Rags to Rhythm”.

With each passing year Jason Marsalis continues to grow and develop as both a composerand performer. With a fire in his heart and a passion for the music, his will to swing hasnever been more resolute. The maturity and the command he possesses over his music isclearly evident to those who have heard or seen him.

That set the stagefor the 2010 CAAS convention where they were on the schedule of performers.Though they were not originally listed to play on the big Saturday night finale, theywere added to the show due to popular demand from those who heard themthroughout the week.

Loren and Mark's varied repertoire of original and arranged music consists ofstunning guitar duets as well as songs, giving them a wide appeal.

Their music is influenced by Bluegrass, Jazz and Western; their style of guitarplaying is largely built upon the thumb-picking techniques pioneered by guitargreats Merle Travis, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, and their songs feature Lorenssuperb vocals and some beautiful harmonies from Mark.

Barrigar and Mazengarb have toured extensively in both the USA and in Europe, and their fan base is rapidly expanding. They recorded their first album togetherthe summer of 2011 which won a SAMMY (Syracuse Area Music Awards) for BestAlbum at the Northeast Music Industry Conference, and their second album Onwardalso won a SAMMY. The title track 'Onward' won first place at the InternationalAcoustic Music Awards (IAMA) for Best Instrumental. Their most recent album is livefrom their 2013 tour of Europe

Loren and Marks live performances feature not only their spectacular technicalgrasp of the guitar, but also their outstanding musicality and ability to bespontaneously creative. The interaction between the two musicians is as much afeature of their shows as is the world-class guitar playing that they both display.

A.J. Croce$20.00 Friday 9/22 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Dynamic Vocalist, Pianist & Son of Legendary Singer Songwriter Jim Croce hitsthe stage at Nighttown!

According to Willie Nelson, “A.J. Croce has wisdom beyond his years. With his music,he represents his generation with a profound sense of honesty in his lyrics andquality in his delivery. The future of entertainment is safe in his hands!”

A.J. Croce has been inextricably linked to a version of his own story by virtue of hisname. He’s experienced a lifetime of comparisons to a father he lost at age two, whose music bears little resemblance to his own output yet still serves as areference point despite the years that have passed and the many iconic mentorswho have stepped in to offer their counsel, creativity, and endorsement throughouthis long career.

It’s curious that it now feels necessary to include the reference, as enough time haspassed that a new generation of tastemakers and journalists might not know whoJim Croce was — that he was a golden-voiced everyman, a singer-songwriter-guitarist who died too soon, leaving one of pop music’s most beautiful andmemorable ballads (written about a young A.J.) in his wake.

Croce the younger, on the other hand, is a piano man, first and foremost, and avocal stylist second. His muted growl pulls from a host of American traditions andanti-heroes — it’s part New Orleans, part juke joint, part soul, but somehow evokesNew York, a continuum where John Lurie meets Lou Reed. He is further asongwriter, driven by a personal muse, informed by a life on a boomerang oftragedy.

His gritty and accomplished ninth studio album, produced by legendary soul singer-songwriter and producer Dan Penn, is the latest and arguably greatest effort yet.Penn, of course, is writer of such hits as “The Dark End of the Street,” “Cry Like aBaby,” “I’m Your Puppet” and “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,” and producer ofthe Box Tops’ “The Letter,” as well as songs and recordings by Jerry Lee Lewis,Bobby Blue Bland, Clarence Carter, and Alex Chilton. Also making appearances areGrammy Award-winning country artist Vince Gill, Steve Cropper (Booker T. & theMGs, Blues Brothers, author of many Stax hits), the McCrary Sisters and the MuscleShoals Horns.

Croce has lived longer now than his father did — at 45, he is 15 years beyond theage his father was when he died. With Just Like Medicine (due out August 11, 2017on Compass Records) an authentic version of his story, which contains bothunimaginable sorrow and many blessings, can be felt and understood.

"Just Like Medicine’s" second track, “The Heart That Makes Me Whole,” was writtenby Croce with the late great Leon Russell.

A.J. Croce’s nine albums have been released via both major and independentlabels, and have charted 17 Top 20 singles and all nine albums on the radioincluding on Top 40, Americana, Independent, Blues, and Jazz. A virtuoso pianoplayer, he has performed at a TED Talk and gave a master class at the University ofBarcelona. Croce has also performed on major talk shows and news programsincluding The Late Show, The Tonight Show, The Today Show, CNN, MTV, and VH1.

Eddie Baccus Sr. Quintet + Special Guests$20.00 Saturday 9/30 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Cleveland Jazz Legend & Hammond B-3 Master leads All-Star Group live atNighttown!

Featuring: Eddie Baccus Sr.-Hammond B-3 Organ, Cecil Rucker-vibes, Billy Artis-guitar, Perry Williams III-drums, Mike Cady-vocals + Special Guests TBA

One of the senior statesman of the Cleveland Jazz Scene, organist Eddie Baccus Sr.has set the standard locally since the early 1960's. Like the late great Jimmy Smith,Baccus is a virtuoso on the Hammond B-3, equally adept at soul jazz and bebop. Inmany ways Eddie Baccus Sr. has been to the jazz scene what the late Robert Jr.Lockwood was to the local blues scene; he has been a leader, mentor, and the soulof the community for many years.

Early on his talent was evident as he was linked with another jazz legend, saxophonist Roland Kirk. Baccus and Kirk were schoolmates at the Ohio School ofthe Blind and their sessions together in the old Euclid and 105th area are the stuffof local legends. Kirk would go on to national acclaim before his untimely death inthe late 70's. Baccus stayed close to home and it has been our good fortune.

Eddie Baccus Sr. has been a mentor to countless Cleveland jazz musicians, notablyJoe Lovano, Ernie Krivda, and more recently his son, Eddie Baccus Jr.. His work hasonly been documented infrequently. He recorded an LP with Kirk back in 1962"Feel Real" on Smash records. His other recording is a session done with Lovano inthe mid 1980's entitled "Hometown Sessions". Although he has not gone on togreater glory playing the national circuit, Eddie Baccus Sr. has been the bedrockof the Cleveland jazz scene and his influence on fans and musicians alike has beeninvaluable. Joining Eddie Baccus Sr. for his appearance at Nighttown will be an All-StarCleveland lineup. They are Cecil Rucker on the Vibes. Eddie Sr. has frequentlyappeared with Cecil's group Good Vibes. Billy Artis is on guitar. Many willremember Billy from his days backing the late great Bill Doggett at the Theatrical indowntown Cleveland. Perry Williams III is on drums. Perry is a veteran on the souljazz circuit and has worked with Eddie Sr. and Cecil extensively. And on vocals isRon Davis. Don't miss Hammond B-3 wizard Eddie Baccus Sr. Quartet live atNighttown.
