This year, we celebrate Robert Joffrey’s Nutcracker, the final creation of our founder, and an American holiday tradition for twenty-eight years. Joffrey loved Christmas, and poured his heart into this production. Thousands of people across the nation have been enchanted by Joffrey’s Nutcracker. Some who experienced The Nutcracker as children in 1987, bring their own children today. I feel fortunate to have been a dancer in the Company during its creation. I danced the role of Mayor Stahlbaum and the Snow King in the opening night performance.

We are proud of Robert Joffrey’s legacy and we are grateful for the important role his Nutcracker has played in our sixty-year history. I believe Robert Joffrey would encourage us to look forward. He understood the changing nature of the world and our need, as artists, to embrace these changes. He championed new technologies, discovered creative talent and found fresh ways of telling familiar stories.

With these performances, we say thank you to Robert Joffrey and to all who have supported his vision for the Company through the years. In March 1989, barely a year after Robert Joffrey’s death and the creation of our Nutcracker, esteemed dance critic Anna Kisselgoff wrote:

“As The Joffrey Ballet looks to the future, it also remains reassuringly committed to its past. Distinct from other American ballet companies, it has sought to reflect the society in which we live…The spirit of the times. Perhaps that is the Joffrey’s true trademark.”

We honor Robert Joffrey’s memory by continuing his pioneering spirit. Next year, world-renowned choreographer Christopher Wheeldon will create a new Nutcracker for The Joffrey Ballet. Chris is a master storyteller, having choreographed several full-length ballets including last season’s Swan Lake. Most recently, he directed and choreographed the Broadway musical, An American in Paris, for which he won a Tony Award.®

It is bittersweet to say goodbye to an old friend. But the best farewell is also a celebration: an opportunity to remember, to find a permanent place in our hearts for those things we love. With art, memory is something like immortality.

ACT I

Scene 1It is Christmas Eve in an American city in the 1850s. Mayor and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their domestic help are preparing for a party. The two children, Clara and Fritz, join their parents in the parlor and enthuse over the Christmas tree and its treasures. Soon their guests arrive laden with gifts. The last to appear are the mysterious Dr. Drosselmeyer, (Clara and Fritz’s godfather) and Drosselmeyer’s nephew. They have brought many wonderful gifts and surprises for the Stahlbaums and their friends. Young and old are delighted and amused by the mechanical dolls – Columbine, Harlequin, the Vivandiere, and the Soldier – which dance for the guests. As a special gift for Clara, Dr. Drosselmeyer has brought a Nutcracker. Fritz, who with his friends has been teasing the girls, snatches it away and accidentally breaks it. Godfather Drosselmeyer bandages the Nutcracker and comforts the heartbroken Clara. But now it grows late; the guests take their leave and the family goes upstairs to bed.

Scene 2It is midnight. Everyone is sleeping but Clara, who has returned to the parlor to fetch her Nutcracker from under the tree. She hears a noise. A small mouse scurries by, then another. The mice begin to tease her, but Godfather Drosselmeyer has returned to chase them away. Suddenly, the parlor disappears and the tree grows before our very eyes and Godfather Drosselmeyer transforms the small Nutcracker into a life-sized Nutcracker Doll. The toy soldiers that have been standing guard under the tree have also grown to life size. The Nutcracker Doll summons the soldiers to battle with the mice, who are now led by the Mouse King. Clara returns with her Godfather Drosselmeyer and just in time, throws her slipper at the Mouse King and saves the Nutcracker Doll. With Clara’s kiss, he is transformed into the Nutcracker Prince.

Scene 3Godfather Drosselmeyer leads Clara and the Nutcracker Prince into the Land of Snow. Here they meet the Snow Queen and King and Snow Prince. The enchanted journey continues to the Kingdom of Sweets.

The Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes Clara, the Nutcracker Prince, and Dr. Drosselmeyer to the Kingdom of Sweets. The Nutcracker Prince tells the Sugar Plum Fairy about their magical battle with the mice. Gifts are presented to Clara. The subjects of this enchanted kingdom are the dolls from under Clara’s tree. Divertissements from all over the world and the flowers from her Victorian bouquet have grown to life size and dance in her honor.

But all dreams must come to an end and children must return home to their loving families. Clara too departs the land of dreams and returns home.

The original production of The Nutcracker premiered on December 17, 1892 at the Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. The ballet was suggested by the Russian director Alexandrovitch Vsevolojsky as a collaboration between the well-known French choreographer Marius Petipa and famous composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Vsevolojsky suggested they work together to create a ballet based on the French version of a German children’s story, written by Alexandre Dumas Senior. The original German tale was E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Together with his assistant ballet master Lev Ivanov, Petipa began creating the steps in August of 1892. When Petipa got sick before finishing the ballet, Ivanov took over to complete the choreography, marking the beginning of The Nutcracker’s celebrated history.

On December 10, 1987, The Joffrey Ballet first presented its own production of The Nutcracker at the Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City, IA. This world premiere was followed in the same month by performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and the New York City Center. According to a review in The New York Times, the Joffrey’s production of The Nutcracker was “something to write home about.”

Robert Joffrey’s version of The Nutcracker is based on the ballet’s first presentation in America by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1940, which was Alexandra Fedorova’s restaging of the original Petipa version. Robert Joffrey’s vision and choreography, with the help of his co-founder Gerald Arpino, created the first truly American Nutcracker. The Nutcracker was now staged in America and incorporated American traditions. So while it is a relatively new version, Joffrey’s Nutcracker plays an important role in this history by combining old and new elements within a uniquely American setting.

ASHLEY WHEATER Artistic Director

Born in Scotland and raised in England, Mr. Wheater was trained at The Royal Ballet School. Mr. Wheater began his professional career with The Royal Ballet, and danced at the London Festival Ballet, The Australian Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet and San Francisco Ballet. In 1997, he became Ballet Master at San Francisco Ballet, and in 2002, Assistant to the Artistic Director.

In 2007, Mr. Wheater was appointed Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet. New work is the life blood of a company, and he has introduced numerous premieres to the repertoire. In 2008, the Boeing Corporation recognized his commitment to community outreach and diversity in the world of dance, presenting him the “Game Changer” award. In 2010, Mr. Wheater, representing The Joffrey Ballet, was named Lincoln Academy Laureate, the highest honor presented by the State of Illinois. The Chicago Tribune selected Mr. Wheater as 2013 “Chicagoan of the Year” for his contributions to dance. In 2014, Mr. Wheater accepted the Chicago Spirit of Innovation Award for The Joffrey Ballet. In 2015, Wheater received the University of Chicago Rosenberger Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the Creative and Performing Arts.

Scott Speck has inspired international acclaim as a conductor of passion, intelligence and winning personality. He is the Artistic Director of the Chicago Philharmonic and Music Director of the Mobile (AL) and West Michigan Symphony Orchestras. He has led major orchestras at London’s Royal Opera House, the Paris Opera, Washington’s Kennedy Center, San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House, and the Los Angeles Music Center.

He has been Conductor of the San Francisco Ballet; Music Advisor/Conductor of the Honolulu Symphony; and Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Opera. He was named Principal Guest Conductor of the China Film Philharmonic in Beijing.

Scott Speck is the co-author of three of the world’s best-selling books on classical music and dance: Classical Music for Dummies, Opera for Dummies, and Ballet for Dummies. These books have been translated into twenty languages and are available around the world.

A Fulbright scholar and summa cum laude graduate of Yale; Scott is a regular commentator on NPR, the BBC, ABC Australia, and Voice of Russia. He has been featured in TED talks and at the Aspen Ideas Festival. His writing appears in numerous magazines and journals.

MICHAEL SMITH Children’s Ballet Master

Suzanne Lopez was asked to join The Joffrey Ballet in 1991, after a year with the Joffrey II Dancers. In 2010, she retired after a long and outstanding career with the Company. She danced principal roles in ballets by such choreographers as Robert Joffrey, Gerald Arpino, George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Alonzo King, John Cranko, José Limón, Antony Tudor, Twyla Tharp, Lar Lubovitch, and Frederick Ashton. Some of her favorite roles to perform include the title roles in Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet and Ashton’s Cinderella, as well as the Sugar Plum Fairy in Joffrey’s The Nutcracker. She was also featured in world premieres by Edwaard Liang, Donald Byrd, Jessica Lang, and Margo Sappington, among others. Suzanne also had a featured role in the movie The Company, directed by Robert Altman.

Ms. Lopez has worked as a Ballet Master for the Joffrey, and has staged and rehearsed works for the Company. She has also been a guest teacher, stager and coach at various schools and companies around the country. Currently, Ms. Lopez teaches at the Joffrey Academy of Dance, Chicago Ballet Arts, and the Chicago High School for the Arts. She is honored and thrilled to have worked with both the Company and the Children’s Cast for this final year of Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker.

Michael Smith joined The Joffrey Ballet in 2001 as a Company member after being one of the first participants in the Arpino Apprentice Program. Prior to joining the Joffrey, he was a student in the dance department at The Chicago Academy for the Arts, where he studied ballet with Anna Paskevska and Graham-based modern dance with Randy Duncan. Mr. Smith has also studied dance at The Ruth Page School and The Joffrey Ballet School’s Midwest workshop.

Mr. Smith danced roles in ballets by such choreographers asGerald Arpino, Robert Joffrey, George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins,John Cranko, Antony Tudor, Twyla Tharp, Lar Lubovitch, Frederick Ashton, Edwaard Liang, Jir̆í Kylián and Jessica Lang, among others.

In addition to serving as Ballet Master for the Children’s Cast of The Nutcracker, Mr. Smith is currently a Program Coordinator with the Joffrey’s Community Engagement department, as well as an independent choreographer.

PYOTR (PETER) ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY Composer

Pyotr (Peter) Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) composed some of the most beloved themes in all of classical music. He founded no school, struck out few new paths or compositional methods, and sought few innovations in his works. Yet the power and communicative sweep of his best music elevates it to classic status. It was Tchaikovsky’s unique melodic charm, whether in his Piano Concerto No. 1 or in his ballet The Nutcracker, that could make the music seem familiar on first hearing.

Tchaikovsky started piano lessons at age four and showed remarkable talent, eventually surpassing his own teacher’s abilities. At age ten, he was sent to St. Petersburg to study at the School of Jurisprudence. In 1859, he took a position as a civil servant in the Ministry of Justice, but longed for a career in music, attending concerts and operas at every opportunity. He finally began study in harmony at age 21, and enrolled at the St. Petersburg Conservatory the following year, eventually studying with the illustrious composer and pianist Anton Rubinstein.

In 1866, Rubinstein’s brother Nicolai founded a new conservatory in Moscow. He invited Peter Tchaikovsky to join him there as a Professor of Harmony. Shortly afterward, Tchaikovsky turned out his First Symphony and began a number of operas. In Moscow, Tchaikovsky also became associated with the Bolshoi Theatre, and there he composed his first ballet, Swan Lake, in 1875. Within a few years Tchaikovsky was an established composer, beloved throughout Russia. Among his works are six numbered symphonies, three ballets, several operas including Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades, three piano concertos, a violin concerto, several tone poems including Romeo and Juliet, several piano and chamber pieces, and the Serenade for Strings.

Peter Tchaikovsky revolutionized Russian ballet music. Whereas the music had previously served mainly to showcase the pyrotechnics of ballet dancers, Tchaikovsky’s music had a deep soul and a dramatic arc of its own. His luscious themes and emotional force drew attention to themselves and often became the main attraction, lending huge weight and import to the dance.

Unbeknownst to Tchaikovsky, other ballet composers were experimenting with similar styles – just not in Russia. The Frenchman Léo Delibes composed Sylvia right around the time that Tchaikovsky was writing Swan Lake. Sylvia also abounds in beautiful themes and dramatic forward motion. Tchaikovsky discovered Sylvia years afterward, and was incredibly impressed; he famously said that if he had known of it sooner, he never would have had the courage to finish Swan Lake.

By the time of Tchaikovsky’s third and final ballet, he had become a much more confident composer. There is not a wasted note in The Nutcracker. And even more than in Swan Lake (or in Delibes’ Sylvia), the composer’s endless gift for melody is on full display in The Nutcracker. There is a new unforgettable theme about once per minute – for two hours!

I have now conducted The Nutcracker over 300 times, and there are two sections that still choke me up every time: the beautiful Snow Pas de Deux at the end of Act I, and the big tune of the Grand Pas de Deux in Act 2. These are both simple, yet emotional melodies, built on major scales that start rather quietly and build to a glorious climax with full orchestra. At moments like these, I feel that there is simply no better music in the world.

...A few years later, at The Royal Ballet School, we performed the elaborate Rudolf Nureyev production. At the beginning, I was a Child in the Party Scene. As I grew older, I learned the role of the Footman and I danced Waltz of the Flowers and the Russian dance. I always remember Nureyev’s transformation from Drosselmeyer to Prince. It literally happened in two seconds. I was fascinated by how they could make the change so quickly. It was magical!

At English National Ballet, we danced Ronald Hynd’s version of Nutcracker. By then, I was a professional dancer and danced in the Party Scene, as a Soldier in the Battle, and for the first time, the role of the Prince. At The Australian Ballet, we danced a Nutcracker created by Leonid Kozlov based on the classic Bolshoi choreography. In 1984, I joined The Joffrey Ballet. At the time, the Joffrey did not have a Nutcracker, but each year, I came to Chicago to dance in Ruth Page’s Nutcracker at Arie Crown Theater.

In 1987, Robert Joffrey created his Nutcracker, which we present today. I have bittersweet memories being involved in the creative process and dancing in the world premiere. At this time, Robert Joffrey was very ill. We would send him video of the rehearsals and he would respond with his comments. Because of his declining health, Mr. Joffrey was not at the premiere in Iowa City. He joined us when we returned to New York City. When he came on stage at the end of the performance, the performers were shocked. He did not look well. It was a very emotional night for all of us who knew and loved him.

During my years with San Francisco Ballet, we performed Lew Christiansen’s Nutcracker, the first Nutcracker produced in America. Helgi Tomasson, current director of San Francisco Ballet, created a new Nutcracker in 2004. I had retired as a dancer, but Helgi thought of me to dance the role of Drosselmeyer. This was my first opportunity to perform in a character role.

In America, it is impossible to think of the holidays without thinking of The Nutcracker. For many of us, Clara, Fritz, Drosselmeyer, the Nutcracker and the Mouse King have become a part of the family. We look forward to seeing them each Christmas. And the warm glow of the Auditorium Theatre provides a peaceful sanctuary from the cold outside and the frantic rush of shopping, parties and end-of-year activity. Onstage, we see people rather like ourselves, with a touch more magic.

My very first Nutcracker was in Leicester, England, at the age of six. I danced the role of Fritz, because I was a tiny boy and a little bit naughty...

Robert Joffrey’s Nutcracker provides opportunities for local children to dance on stage. When we take Nutcracker on tour, we hold an open audition for young dancers. Each community provides its own children’s cast. This is a unique experience and a great educational tool.

When the Company moved to Chicago, a boy confined to a wheelchair came to the audition and asked to be in The Nutcracker. Co-founder Gerald Arpino was impressed, altered the choreography and cast the boy. This role still exists. I like to think that Joffrey’s Nutcracker speaks to everyone. Our Nutcracker is rather like our Company, populated by individuals as diverse as the country in which we live. Today, in addition to our open auditions, we are able to draw from the talent found in our Academy of Dance and our amazing Community Engagement program. Children from our Lemonis Bridge program have the opportunity to dance with children from our Academy pre-professional program.

Because of the sheer number of performances, many of our talented Company dancers have the opportunity to dance a challenging principal role. This is great for the dancers and good for our audience, sometimes revealing a rising star dancing the Sugar Plum Fairy or the Nutcracker Prince.

Each year, thousands of children from Chicagoland and the Chicago Public Schools join us for a performance of The Nutcracker. For many of them, life is not easy. For some, their visit to The Nutcracker is their first trip to the heart of the city, the first time they have seen live theatre, the first opportunity see a ballet performance. Who knows which door might open as a result of this exposure? If even one child says “I want to dance” or “I want to play an instrument,” we have accomplished something.

Having danced in so many different Nutcrackers through the years, it is thrilling to contemplate a new production by choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. This project has been “on simmer” for nearly eight years. I’ve always believed in Chris’ creativity and his ability to tell a story. While we made plans for our new Nutcracker, Chris created Swan Lake, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Winter’s Tale, and An American in Paris on Broadway – successful and thoroughly entertaining narrative works. I cannot think of a better person to “reimagine” Nutcracker for the Joffrey and for audiences here in Chicago and across the country. In the performing arts, we must look for new ideas and new ways to tell a story. The world is changing. How do we create magic in this technologically interconnected and sometimes cynical world? How do we tell the stories of people living today? The Joffrey has always sought to find the balance, and the tension, between the traditional and the new.

On December 27, 2015, after twenty-eight years, we will raise the curtain one last time on this Nutcracker. I will reprise my original role as Mayor Stahlbaum. Nutcracker FUN FACTS• The fi rst Nutcracker

performance took place on December 17th, 1892.

• The arrangement of steps in the ballet is called choreography (kawr-ee-OG-ruh-fee); the person who creates the steps is the choreographer.

• Pointe shoes are very hard when new, but they become verysoft as a dancer wears them. In fact, a ballerina may wear out a pair of pointe shoes in just one performance!

• This production uses approximately 200 costumes and 172 pairs of boots and shoes!

WHEN WATCHING THE SHOW, PLEASE REMEMBER TO:• Dress nicely

• Arrive early

• Sit quietly and try not to get up until the performance is over

• Show your appreciation by applauding or yelling “Bravo”

• Not use a camera

• Turn off cell phones

• Not eat or drink in the theater
