Faith in Christ Jesus:2 Timothy 1:12 defines FAITH as knowing the trustworthy character and motives of Jesus, and being confident in His limitless promise-keeping ability, and consequently committing yourself entirely to His keeping. We are studying the Gospel of John, answering these questions: 1) What is revealed of Jesus’ character, motives, and abilities? 2) What is indicated that you could confidently commit to Jesus’?

Possessing What Possesses!John 14:1-33

Ultimately, what is given to people who trust Jesus is a sharp contrast and opposite to Satan’s possession of Judas Iscariot (John 13:30).

FIRST, (vv. 1-4) we are given hope. All of those dwellings are within The Father’s House! Jesus isn’t going away. He is going to prepare (metaphor: drawn from the oriental custom of sending on before kings on their journeys persons to level the roads and make them passable)! He is coming back for us! His ultimate goal is that we will be with Him forever!

SECOND, (vv. 5-14) we are given power! Thomas wanted to know the goal and how to get there. Jesus taught the HE is the way, and THE FATHER is the goal! In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit’s power was a temporary visitation. However, the Father dwelt in Christ without interruption, giving through Jesus HIS teachings, HIS works, HIS power! Now Jesus gives to us, via the Holy Spirit, exactly the same invisible and seamless joining of a corporeal being (us) with a non-corporeal being (God)! (1Cr 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.) The unlimited power of working by faith and of praying in faith is qualified by obedience to His Commandments, such as is the outcome of personal love to Him (John 14:15).

THIRD, (vv. 15-24) we are given His perpetual presence! Another ( another of the same kind, not of a different kind) Comforter (counselor, helper, intercessor, advocate, strengthener, and standby) will live with us and be IN us! Understand this: Christ loved us while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8), but our love for Him is evidenced by our obedience to Christ’s commands (John 13:34, & 15:12, Romans 13:8-10, Galatians 5:14, 6:2)

FOUTH, (vv. 25-31) we are given peace! We will have inner assurance, regardless of circumstances, so long as we recall the words of Christ! So it is that Verse 26 provides to us Verse 27! Also, you cannot be reminded of words you have never read or heard!!! You MUST put it in your head and heart before you can be reminded of it during those great crises of life!
