In 1990, “Dances With Wolves” was one of Barry’s last musical compositions but easily comes in as one of his greatest treasures. In this western, he designs musical themes that tell many stories.

Academy Award Winner!

1st Theme:Portrayal of Lt. Dunbar. A wonderful collaboration of

powerful strings and trumpets that relay the strength and troubles of Dunbar. First leading in

with dramatic strong violins and deep tones of brass in the background.

The higher notes express a lonely Dunbar. From :30

strings “sweep” across the open fields while brass

repeats a medium range melody in the background

still. The theme closes with the brass alone rather

abruptly.

In This work Barry also portrays the confidence of Dunbar as the theme opens with subtle and convincing violins followed by the triumphant trumpets that take your mind across the plains.

2nd Theme:The Love Theme.Again leading into the story with strings, at :20 the woodwinds softly and very vividly pull in a love interest. Until 2:00 the strings and woodwinds play opposite of one another as if it were a dance. At 2:24 the sound of the strings sway high then low. At 3:20 the higher pitch seems to culminate the piece until the strings slowly fade into an evening sky.

An Emotional Masterpiece!

3rd Theme:The Buffalo Hunt.Again leading in with signature strings at :08 quickly the horns come to announce “the Chasing” of the herd. The tempo increases at :30 when you sense the galloping stampede. At 1:15 the percussion is introduced that keeps in good timing with a cadence of sorts. At 2:00 barotones announce the kill and 2:25 signifies the resilience of the buffalo as the dramatic horns first low then higher come in and finally the beast has fallen to the ground and man has again found success in their hunt.

The “Hunt” signifies the challenges of a lonely man to survive. Barry’s theme clearly expresses the triumph that is obtained.
