1817 - 1911
One of our most distinguished citizens, John Bigelow,
was, above all, dedicated to the improvement of thehuman condition. Throughout his long life he was
engaged in public affairs - active in prison reform, Consul
to France during the Civil War, founder of the New York
Public Library, co-owner and managing editor of the New
York Evening Post, biographer, and profile writer. He
was an intellectual described as a “common-sense”
mystic. Shrewdly practical, worldly, yet with other-
worldly interests; a natural aristocrat who believed in
democracy - such a man was Bigelow.
