60-15-2 Tractor, Model UM"-Englne

(1) Follow procedure outlined in Engine Removal to drain cooling system and to remove or disconnect the following parts: Hood assembly, air cleaner, choke control, fuel line, governor-tocarburetor linkage, manifold, muffler, carburetor, throttle-control-rod-to-governor linkage, throttle control rod front bracket, and heat baffle.

(2) Loosen upper water hose from water manifold and disconnect heat indicator (Figure

60-15-2). Remove water manifold.

(3) Disconnect oil line on rear of cylinder head (Figure 60-15-2).

(4) Disconnect spark plug cables from spark plugs. Remove spark plugs.

(5) Remove two nuts, seal retainers, and seals from top of rocker arm cover. Remove rocker arm cover and gasket.

(6) Remove rocker arm assembly (Figure

Figure 6D-1S-l-0il Line 60-15-3). and Heat Indicator

Coupling. (7) Remove the four push rods and identify for reassembly.

(8) Remove cylinder head and gasket (Figure 60-15-4).

DISASSEMBLY Remove two rocker arm attaching studs using

a standard stud remover.

Remove Valves. Using the special valve spring compressor (Figure 60-15-5), remove valves.

Figure 6D-1S-4-Removi,ng Cylinder Head

Select four 7/8-inch valve holding buttons which accompany compressor and place them into appropriate holes in compressor base. These buttons prevent valves from moving downward when pressure is applied to springs. Place cylinder head on compressor base so that valve heads are directly over buttons, assemble upper portions of valve spring compressor, and move both handles down simultaneously until they lock (Figure 60-15-5).

REMOVAL Remove Weather Cap. Pull up on weather

cap and separate it from air cleaner inlet tube.

Remove Hood. Use a large screw driver to unlock sheet metal fasteners. Lift off hood.

Loosen Air Cleaner-to-Carburetor Hose. Use a screw driver to loosen clamp which holds carburetor-to-air-cleaner hose on carburetor air horn (Figure 70-20-2). Slip hose free of carburetor air horn.

oil cup (Figure 70-20-2) by loosening thumbscrew in air cleaner cup mounting band. Loosen lower air cleaner attaching bolt and remove upper attaching cap screw, using a flex

head socket (Figure 70-20-3). Lift out air cleaner.

DISASSEMBLY Further disassembly of the air cleaner, other

than removing air cleaner hose, and oil cup mounting band is not practical.

INSPECTION AND REPAIR Cleaning. Submerge all air cleaner parts in a

cleaning solvent and scrub thoroughly to remove all traces of dirt and grease. Swirl air cleaner body 8M (4.1-47)

up and down in cleaning solvent, to be sure all dirt and oil deposits on filter element have been washed off. Set air cleaner upper body aside and let it drain completely. CAUTION: Do not attempt to dry filter element with compressed air as it will damage element.

Inspection and Repair. Inspect air cleaner hose clamps for damage which would render them unserviceable. Replace if necessary.

Carefully check condition of air-cleaner-to-carburetor hose. If any sign of deterioration is present, replace hose.

NOTE: This hose should be checked periodically jor evidences of deterioration. Gasoline from carburetor often settles in air cleaner hose causing deterioration and leaks in air intake passages.

Air Cleaner

Inspect oil cup mounting band and thumbscrew for bends or stripped threads which might result in air leakage around air cleaner cup. If mounting band or thumb screw is damaged, replace.

Further repair of air cleaner should not be attempted.

INSTALLATION (For correct location of

parts refer to Figure 70-20-4.)

Install Air Cleaner. Slip slotted mounting bracket down over lower air cleaner mounting bolt (Figure 70-20-5) making sure that a flat washer is on outside of each slotted mounting bracket.

Using a flex-head socket, install upper attaching cap screw and lock washer (Figure 70-20-3) and tighten securely. Tighten lower air cleaner attaching bolt.

Install Oil Cup. If oil cup mounting band has been removed from upper body, reassemble it. Fill oil cup to indicated oil level (1-1/4 pints) with same grade oil as used in crankcase. Slip oil cup into place, secure mounting band around it, and

REMOVAL Remove Rear Wheel and Hub. Follow

procedure outlined in Rear Wheel Removal to remove rear wheel and hub.

Remove Final Drive Assembly. Remove cotter key from pin which holds brake rod to brake pedal (Figure 140-10-4). Disconnect rod from pedal by removing yoke pin. Remove yoke and jam nut from end of rod. Push rod backward

SM (4-1-47)

Remove Brake Assembly. Unscrew three attaching cap screws (Figure 140-10-5), and remove brake assembly. CAUTION: The brakedriven disk and shims are free and will drop unless care is exercised.

DISASSEMBLY

Depress springs and turn brake-releasing spring washers (Figure 140-10-6) until unlocked. Remove springs and brake-releasing spring pins.

Figure 140-10-6-Removing Brake Releas

ing Spring

CAUTION: When all springs are removed, brake will fall apart if handled carelessly. Do not lose balls. Brake actuating-lever thrust bearing can be removed with an arbor press. The retainer shell side of bearing fits into primary disk. Parts should be laid out in proper order.

INSPECTION AND REPAIR

Cleaning. Clean all parts thoroughly, except driven disk with facings, with cleaning solvent, removing all grease and dirt with a stiff brush. Dry with compressed air. When cleaning actuating lever thrust bearing, allow bearing to remain in cleaning fluid long enough to loosen dirt and old grease. Slush bearing in fluid, and slowly rotate it until clean. Blowout bearing, directing air pressure across bearing to remove last traces of dirt and old grease. Do not spin bearing. Dip bearing in SAE 10 engine oil, and hang up to drain thoroughly. NOTE: This is important, as it is only a rust preventative. No further lubrication should be provided in service. Wrap bearing in paper until ready to use.

Driven Disk and Facings.

Inspection. Inspect facings (Figure 140-10-1) for excessive wear. If facings are worn down to rivet heads, they should be replaced. If facings are oil-soaked or glazed enough to prevent proper braking action, they should be replaced. Inspect splines in disk for burs, chips, or scoring. Remove rough spots by filing or honing. If splines are excessively worn or damaged, replace disk.
