John Nelson Darby Version: Doctrinal Changes to theHoly Bible

In view of John Darby's departure from historic Christianbeliefs, let us examine his bible

King James Bible John Darby Version

And this gospel of thekingdom shall bepreached in all theworld for a witnessunto all nations; andthen shall the endcome.

Matthew 24:14 Matthew 24:14 Andthese glad tidings of thekingdom shall bepreached in the wholehabitable earth, for awitness to all thenations, and then shallcome the end.

Watch ye therefore, and pray always, thatye may be accountedworthy to escape allthese things thatshall come to pass, and to stand beforethe Son of man.

Luke 21:36 Watch therefore, prayingat every season, that yemay be accountedworthy to escape allthese things which areabout to come to pass, and to stand before theSon of man

Cyrus Scofield did too!

Wisdom is theprincipal thing;therefore getwisdom: and with allthy getting getunderstanding.

Proverbs 4:7 The beginning ofwisdom is, Get wisdom;and with all thy gettingget intelligence.

[John Darby repeatedlyused the word,"intelligence" to replacewhat God gives to hispeople: understanding, wisdom, and judgment.See more citations in:Darby's "Intelligence"Replaced God-givenWisdom andUnderstanding.]

That ye be not soonshaken in mind, or betroubled, neither byspirit, nor by word, nor by letter as fromus, as that the day ofChrist is at hand.

2 Thess. 2:2 that ye be not soonshaken in mind, nortroubled, neither byspirit, nor by word, norby letter, as [if it were]by us, as that the day ofthe Lord is present.

Matthew 12:32 Andwhosoever speaketha word against theSon of man, it shallbe forgiven him: butwhosoever speakethagainst the HolyGhost, it shall not beforgiven him, neitherin this world, neitherin the world to come.

Matthew 12:32 And whosoever shallhave spoken a wordagainst the Son of man,it shall be forgiven him;but whosoever shallspeak against the HolySpirit, it shall not beforgiven him, neither inthis age nor in thecoming one.

Looking for thatblessed hope, and theglorious appearing ofthe great God andour Saviour JesusChrist;

The King James Bibletells us that we arelooking for theappearing of thegreat God and ourSaviour Jesus Christ. It describes hisappearing as"glorious."

Titus 2:13 awaiting the blessedhope and appearing ofthe glory of our greatGod and Saviour JesusChrist;

[Darby changed"glorious appearing" to"appearing of theglory."]

How is this significant? Rather than waiting forthe appearing of JesusChrist (as stated in theKJV), Darby has hisBible say awaiting theappearing of notsomeone (Jesus Christ)but rather, some thing.

What does J.N. Darbysay is being waited for?The appearing of (his)glory. In this verse, JohnDarby removed theglorious appearing ofChrist from Scripture.

The heavens declare theglory of God . . . (Ps.19:1) The glory of Godis already there for all tobehold, even the lost. Titus 2:13 is not aboutwaiting for theappearing of God'sglory. It is about waitingfor the appearing of God(our Savior Jesus Christ)himself!

Modern versions such asthe NLT, NIV, ESV, HCSB,NASB, RSV, ASV, YLT,

and HNV (not acomplete list) also teachfalse doctrine in Titus2:13 by replacinglooking for the gloriousappearing of JesusChrist with a rewordingthat is aboutlooking/waiting for theappearing of his gloryinstead.

What could be aplausible application ofthis change?Strategically placedholograms can depict,on a seemingly globalscale, a counterfeit"appearing of the glory"of "Christ". Beware falseBible versions and thefalse teachings taughttherein.

And Joseph and hismother marvelled atthose things whichwere spoken of him.

Luke 2:33 And his father andmother wondered at thethings which were saidconcerning him.

Scofield did the samevia his marginal note fon page 1217: Someauthorities end versewith "body."]

And Jesus answeredand said unto him,Get thee behind me,Satan: for it iswritten, Thou shaltworship the Lord thyGod, and him onlyshalt thou serve.

Luke 4:8 And Jesus answeringhim said, It is written,Thou shalt do homageto the Lord thy God, andhim alone shalt thouserve.

[Darby removed"without a cause" inregard to being angrywith one's brother. JesusChrist had cause to beangry with themoneychangers in thetemple but Darby'sVersion turns the sinlessSon of God into asinner.]

For we are thecircumcision, whichworship God in thespirit, and rejoice inChrist Jesus, andhave no confidence inthe flesh.

If any man will do hiswill, he shall know ofthe doctrine, whetherit be of God, orwhether I speak ofmyself.

John 7:17 If any one desire topractise his will, he shallknow concerning thedoctrine, whether it is ofGod, or that I speakfrom myself.

[John Darby changed"will do his will" to"desire to practise hiswill."]

The first man is of theearth, earthy: thesecond man is theLord from heaven.

the first man out of theearth, made of dust; thesecond man, out ofheaven.

1 Corinthians11:24

and having given thanksbroke it, and said, Thisis my body, which is foryou: this do inremembrance of me.

[Darby removed "take, eat" and "broken foryou."]

For he that eatethand drinkethunworthily, eatethand drinkethdamnation to himself, not discerning theLord's body.

1 Corinthians11:29

For the eater anddrinker eats and drinksjudgment to himself, notdistinguishing the body.

But if any one say toyou, This is offered toholy purposes, do noteat, for his sake thatpointed it out, andconscience sake;

[Darby replaced "insacrifice unto idols" with"offered to holypurposes"! It is Satan'sfollowers who consider"in sacrifice unto idols"to be something "offeredto holy purposes."]

[Darby also removed "forthe earth is the Lord's,and the fulnessthereof"]

And we believe andare sure that thou artthat Christ, the Sonof the living God.

John 6:69 and we have believedand known that thou artthe holy one of God.

the Son of the livingGod" with a phrase usedonly by devils!]

These things have Iwritten unto you thatbelieve on the nameof the Son of God;that ye may knowthat ye have eternallife, and that ye maybelieve on the nameof the Son of God.

[Darby removed theimmortal and "onlywise" description of

God! He changed"immortal" to"incorruptible" andremoved "wise" (inreference to God!)]

To the only wise Godour Saviour, be gloryand majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever.Amen.

Jude 1:25 to the only God ourSaviour, through JesusChrist our Lord, beglory, majesty, might, and authority, frombefore the whole age,and now, and to all theages. Amen.

[Darby greatly alteredthis verse and againremoved the adjective,"wise" in reference toGod.]

2 Thessalonians 3:5And the Lord directyour hearts into thelove of God, and intothe patient waiting forChrist.

2 Thess. 3:5 But the Lord direct yourhearts into the love ofGod, and into thepatience of the Christ.[The KJV says the Lorddirects Christians intothe patient waiting forChrist, Darby's Versiondirects them into thepatience of "theChrist."!]

apprehended by themind through the thingsthat are made, both hiseternal power anddivinity, --so as torender theminexcusable.

Being therefore theoffspring of God, weought not to think thatwhich is divine to be likegold or silver or stone, the graven form ofman's art andimagination.

[John Darby removedthe Godhead from theseverses!]

Being then made freefrom sin, ye becamethe servants ofrighteousness.

Rom. 6:18 Now, having got yourfreedom from sin, yehave become bondmento righteousness.

[Darby, along with othertextual critics, taughtvia his translation theLuciferian lie thatChristians are slaves(bondmen) of Godrather than servants.]

And his fame wentthroughout all Syria:and they broughtunto him all sickpeople that weretaken with diversdiseases andtorments, and thosewhich were possessedwith devils, and thosewhich were lunatick, and those that hadthe palsy; and hehealed them.

Matthew 4:24 And his fame went outinto the whole [of]Syria, and they broughtto him all that were ill, suffering under variousdiseases and pains, andthose possessed bydemons, and lunatics, and paralytics; and hehealed them.

[Bible translations basedon corrupt manuscriptsuse phrases such as"possessed by demons"or "demon possessed."The use of suchexorcist-styled wordingserves Satan's purposeby making Christiansafraid to minister topeople who are afflictedwith evil spirits.]

Verily, verily, I sayunto you, He thatbelieveth on me hatheverlasting life.

John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say toyou, He that believes[on me] has life eternal.

[Darby's use of bracketsindicates that thecorrupt manuscripts (onwhich he based histranslation) did notinclude the words, "onme.")

For ye, brethren, became followers ofthe churches of Godwhich in Judaea arein Christ Jesus: for yealso have sufferedlike things of yourown countrymen, even as they have ofthe Jews:

¶ There is thereforenow no condemnationto them which are inChrist Jesus, whowalk not after theflesh, but after theSpirit.

Rom. 8:1 ¶ [There is] then now nocondemnation to thosein Christ Jesus.

removed the soberingconditional part of thisverse in his ReferenceBible by inserting thisnote: "This statementends with 'Jesus Christ;'the last ten words areinterpolated. Note:interpolated meansadded to the original.]

Rom. 8:13 for if ye live according toflesh, ye are about todie; but if, by the Spirit,ye put to death thedeeds of the body, yeshall live:

[Darby's re-wording ofthis verse reminds me ofthe fact that Christianswho understand thebible according to thedispensationalhermeneutic are underthe impression that ifthey refuse to stop livingsinful lives God willchastise them by endingtheir earthly lives andtaking them straight toheaven. The KJV tellsthe truth: If ye(addressed toChristians) live after theflesh ye shall die. Thecontext reveals that thisdeath is a spiritualdeath, not a death thatserves the purpose ofhastening one'sentrance into heaven.]

Not in the lust ofconcupiscence, evenas the Gentiles whichknow not God:

1 Thess. 4:5 (not in passionatedesire, even as thenations who know notGod,)

[Concupiscence has aclearly negativeconnotation whereas"passionate desire" doesnot!]

For God hath notcalled us untouncleanness, but untoholiness.

1 Thess. 4:7 For God has not calledus to uncleanness, but insanctification.

[Darby changed theBible to support his osasteaching that God calledChristians insanctification.[According to Darby-inspired teachings, assoon as you pray the"sinner's prayer" you aresanctified for life--regardless of conduct.)The real Bible teachesthat God has called hispeople unto holiness--unto living a holy life.]

He therefore thatdespiseth, despisethnot man, but God,who hath also givenunto us his holySpirit.

1 Thess. 4:8 He therefore that [inthis] disregards [hisbrother], disregards, notman, but God, who hasgiven also his Holy Spiritto you.

[Despiseth has theconnotation ofcontempt. Disregardsmeans to pay noattention to.]

Abstain from allappearance of evil.

1 Thess. 5:22 hold aloof from everyform of wickedness.

[The real Bible--KJV--warns us to abstain fromeven the appearance ofevil. It is no wonderJohn Darby changedthat verse because hisown translation hasmany appearances ofevil.]

But there were falseprophets also amongthe people, even asthere shall be falseteachers among you,who privily shall bringin damnable heresies, even denying theLord that boughtthem, and bring uponthemselves swiftdestruction.

2 Peter 2:1 there were falseprophets also among thepeople, as there shall bealso among you falseteachers, who shallbring in by the byedestructive heresies,and deny the masterthat bought them,bringing uponthemselves swiftdestruction;

[Since Darby removedthe words, "damned anddamnation" from hisbible, it follows that heremoved "damnable" aswell.]

I charge you by theLord that this epistlebe read unto all theholy brethren.

1 Thess. 5:27 I adjure you by the Lordthat the letter be read toall the [holy] brethren.

[Darby's use of bracketsindicates that thecorrupt manuscripts (onwhich he based histranslation) did notinclude the word,"holy.")

And to you who are 2 Thess 1:7 and to you that are

troubled rest with us,when the Lord Jesusshall be revealedfrom heaven with hismighty angels,

troubled repose with us,at the revelation of theLord Jesus from heaven, with [the] angels of hispower,

Knowing this first, that no prophecy ofthe scripture is of anyprivate interpretation.

2 Pet. 1:20 knowing this first, that[the scope of] noprophecy of scripture ishad from its ownparticular interpretation,

[Since Darby'sinterpretations ofscripture were indeedprivate, it behooved himto change this verse.]

Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and holdthe traditions whichye have been taught, whether by word, orour epistle.

2 Thess. 2:15 So then, brethren, standfirm, and hold fast theinstructions which yehave been taught, whether by word or byour letter.

[Darby required hisfollowers to hold fast hisinstructions rather thanhold the biblicaltraditions.]

But when ye pray, use not vainrepetitions, as theheathen do: for theythink that they shallbe heard for theirmuch speaking.

Matthew 6:7 But when ye pray, usenot vain repetitions, asthose who are of thenations: for they thinkthey shall be heardthrough their muchspeaking.

[Modern translationssuch as the NKJV alsoexchange nation forheathen. See moreexamples.]

¶ Then was Jesus ledup of the Spirit intothe wilderness to betempted of the devil.

Matthew 4:1 Then Jesus was carriedup into the wildernessby the Spirit to betempted of the devil:

[The Darby Bible givesthe false impression thatJesus was bodily

carried by the HolySpirit into thewilderness!]

Even so every goodtree bringeth forthgood fruit; but acorrupt tree bringethforth evil fruit.

Matthew 7:17 So every good treeproduces good fruits, but the worthless treeproduces bad fruits.

A good tree cannotbring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupttree bring forth goodfruit.

Matthew 7:18 A good tree cannotproduce bad fruits, nor aworthless tree producegood fruits.

Wherefore I say untoyou, All manner of sinand blasphemy shallbe forgiven untomen: but theblasphemy againstthe Holy Ghost shallnot be forgiven untomen.

Matthew 12:31 For this reason I sayunto you, Every sin andinjurious speaking shallbe forgiven to men, butspeaking injuriously ofthe Spirit shall not beforgiven to men.

[John Darby removedthe words "blasphemyagainst the Holy Ghost"and softened it to"speaking injuriously ofthe Spirit."]

But he that shallblaspheme againstthe Holy Ghost hathnever forgiveness, but is in danger ofeternal damnation:

Mark 3:29 but whosoever shallspeak injuriously againstthe Holy Spirit, toeternity has noforgiveness; but liesunder the guilt of aneverlasting sin;

[John Darby (along withother modernist Bibletranslators) removed theobvious penalty ofeternal damnation andchanged it to a sin(rather than hell) thatlasts forever: "lies underthe guilt of aneverlasting sin;"

Afterward Jesusfindeth him in thetemple, and said unto

John 5:14 After these things Jesusfinds him in the temple, and said to him, Behold,

him, Behold, thou artmade whole: sin nomore, lest a worsething come unto thee.

thou art become well:sin no more, thatsomething worse do nothappen to thee.

[People often "becomewell" with time andnursing care. JesusChrist made the manwhole and told him so:"thou art made whole!"Darby denied that JesusChrist healed this manwith his false wording inhis false "bible"version.]

She said, No man,Lord. And Jesus saidunto her, Neither do Icondemn thee: go,and sin no more.

John 8:11 And she said, No one, sir. And Jesus said toher, Neither do Icondemn thee: go, andsin no more.

[Darby's versionreplaces "Lord" with"sir."]

Jesus answeredthem, Verily, verily, Isay unto you,Whosoevercommitteth sin is theservant of sin.

John 8:34 Jesus answered them,Verily, verily, I say toyou, Every one thatpractises sin is thebondman of sin.

And when he is come,he will reprove theworld of sin, and ofrighteousness, and ofjudgment:

John 16:8 And having come, hewill bring demonstrationto the world, of sin, andof righteousness, and ofjudgment:

[It is Satan, not theHoly Spirit, who bringsdemonstration of sin tothe world! The HolySpirit reproves the worldof sin (convinces of afault)!]

For he that is dead isfreed from sin.

Romans 6:7 For he that has died isjustified from sin.

Likewise reckon ye Romans 6:11 So also *ye*, reckon

also yourselves to bedead indeed unto sin,but alive unto Godthrough Jesus Christour Lord.

yourselves dead to sinand alive to God inChrist Jesus

[Darby, like so manybiblical textual critics, failed to include, "ourLord."]

***But if any manthink that hebehaveth himselfuncomely toward hisvirgin, if she pass theflower of her age, andneed so require, lethim do what he will,he sinneth not: letthem marry.

1 Cor. 7:36

George RickerBerry Greek toEnglish Interlinear:But if anyonethinks [he]behaves unseemlyto his virginity, ifhe be beyond [his]prime, and so itought to be, whathe wills let him do,he does not sin: letthem marry

But if any one think thathe behaves unseemly tohis virginity, if he bebeyond the flower of hisage, and so it must be,let him do what he will,he does not sin: letthem marry.

[Darby and Newberrychanged the versedrastically on their ownauthority.]

Laying up in store forthemselves a goodfoundation againstthe time to come, that they may layhold on eternal life.

1 Timothy 6:19 laying by for themselvesa good foundation forthe future, that theymay lay hold of what isreally life.

[Darby replaced eternallife with "what is reallylife."]

For the law was givenby Moses, but graceand truth came byJesus Christ.

John 1:17 For the law was given byMoses: grace and truthsubsists through JesusChrist.

[The KJV wordingindicates that grace andtruth "came by" ororiginated with JesusChrist.) Darby's Versionsays that grace andtruth subsists (is causedto stand) through JesusChrist.]

So Christ was onceoffered to bear thesins of many; and

Heb. 9:28 thus the Christ also, having been onceoffered to bear the sins

unto them that lookfor him shall heappear the secondtime without sin untosalvation.

of many, shall appear tothose that look for himthe second time withoutsin for salvation.

1 Timothy 6:20, 21 O Timotheus, keep theentrusted deposit, avoiding profane, vainbabblings, andoppositions of false-named knowledge, ofwhich some havingmade profession, havemissed the faith.

[Darby changed "erred"to "missed" therebyremoving the truth thata real Christian can fallinto error concerning thefaith.]

¶ Now the end of thecommandment ischarity out of a pureheart, and of a goodconscience, and offaith unfeigned: Fromwhich some havingswerved have turnedaside unto vainjangling;

1 Timothy 1:5, 6 ¶ But the end of what isenjoined is love out of apure heart and a goodconscience andunfeigned faith; which[things] some havingmissed, have turnedaside to vain discourse,

[Darby insertedunconditional eternalsecurity doctrine bychanging "swerved" to

"missed." (This supportshis false definition ofapostasy which Scofieldpopularized in hisReference Bible.) Darbyremoved the truth asfound in the KJV: AChristian can swerve(turn aside) from thefaith.]

For God doth knowthat in the day ye eatthereof, then youreyes shall be opened, and ye shall be asgods, knowing goodand evil.

Gen 3:5 but God knows that inthe day ye eat of it, youreyes will be opened, andye will be as God,knowing good and evil

Darby's note: Or 'asgods.'

[John Darby used his"bible version" to insertthe satanic doctrine thatthe fall of manamounted to becominglike God! The real Bible(KJV) says the serpentsaid "ye shall be asgods" knowing good andevil.]

Darby's footnote, "Or 'asgods' evidences that heconsidered God andgods to beinterchangeable in thisverse.

[In Satanism, Satan isthe supreme being, andthe God of the Bible isconsidered to be a fallengod of contemptiblecharacter.]

But what saith theanswer of God untohim? I have reservedto myself seventhousand men, whohave not bowed theknee to the image of

Baal. [Occultists and NewAgers believe theyreceive divine answers. The real Bible saysanswer of God.]

If ye have heard ofthe dispensation ofthe grace of Godwhich is given me toyou-ward:

Eph. 3:2 (if indeed ye have heardof the administration ofthe grace of God whichhas been given to metowards you,

[Paul was not given theadministration of thegrace of God.]

¶ For he is our peace,who hath made bothone, and hath brokendown the middle wallof partition betweenus;

Eph. 2:14 ¶ For *he* is our peace, who has made both one,and has broken downthe middle wall ofenclosure,

[An enclosure means tosurround; to shut in; toconfine on all sides. Apartition is a division orseparation by thecreation of a boundarythat divides.]

For we wrestle notagainst flesh andblood, but againstprincipalities, againstpowers, against therulers of the darknessof this world, againstspiritual wickednessin high places.

Eph. 6:12 because our struggle isnot against blood andflesh, but againstprincipalities, againstauthorities, against theuniversal lords of thisdarkness, againstspiritual [power] ofwickedness in theheavenlies.

[It is Satan's followerswho regard devils asuniversal lords!]

But ye are come untomount Sion, and untothe city of the livingGod, the heavenlyJerusalem, and to aninnumerable companyof angels, To thegeneral assembly and

Heb. 12:22, 23 but ye have come tomount Zion; and to[the] city of [the] livingGod, heavenlyJerusalem; and tomyriads of angels, theuniversal gathering; andto [the] assembly of the

firstborn [who are]registered in heaven;and to God, judge of all;and to [the] spirits ofjust [men] madeperfect;

[Darby added thephrase, "the universalgathering." Darby's re-wording notwithstanding, fallenangels will not bethere.]

Wherein in time pastye walked accordingto the course of thisworld, according tothe prince of thepower of the air, thespirit that nowworketh in thechildren ofdisobedience:

Eph. 2:2 in which ye once walkedaccording to the age ofthis world, according tothe ruler of the authorityof the air, the spirit whonow works in the sons ofdisobedience:

(In this verse Darbyremoved the truth thatChristians used to walkaccording to the course[ways] of this world.)

(Darby caused 1 Tim6:15 to say that JesusChrist is the only ruler. However, he marked his"bible" for his master bymaking the ruler meanSatan. Click here to seewhat I mean.

And I will put enmitybetween thee and thewoman, and betweenthy seed and herseed; it shall bruisethy head, and thoushalt bruise his heel.

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmitybetween thee and thewoman, and betweenthy seed and her seed;he shall crush thy head, and thou shalt crush hisheel.

[Bruise does not meancrush. A bruise does notbreak the skin whereassomething that iscrushed is distorted bypressure. The Lord Jesus

Christ was not crushedby Satan.]

The enemy thatsowed them is thedevil; the harvest isthe end of the world;and the reapers arethe angels.

Matthew 13:39 and the enemy who hassowed it is the devil;and the harvest is thecompletion of the age,and the harvestmen areangels.

[J. N. Darby altered NewTestament propheticpassages by replacingthe word, "world" with"age" (period of time)in order to promote thedispensationalistparadigm shift. In theseinstances, thesubstitution of the word,"age" for "world"communicates thenotion of the end of thedispensation ratherthan the end of theworld.]

Cyrus Scofield defineddispensation as it isused for thedispensationalisthermeneutic in his 1917Reference Bible:

"A dispensation is aperiod of time duringwhich man is tested inrespect to some specificrevelation of the Will ofGod" [emphasis mine]

¶ And Adam knewEve his wife; and sheconceived, and bareCain, and said, I havegotten a man fromthe LORD.

Gen 4:1 And Man knew Eve hiswife; and she conceived, and bore Cain, and said,I have acquired a manwith Jehovah.

[Acquiring a man fromthe Lord is TOTALLYdifferent from having aman with the Lord! Thisis blasphemy. Note:

Satan and his devilshave carnal communionwith human beings, notGod!

Take note of the factthat John Darby and hisPlymouth Brethrencontemporary, ThomasNewberry more oftenthan not, differed withthe KJV translatorsregarding prepositions. This paved the way forthem to promote thefalse doctrine via their"bible" versions that themark of the beast is"on" rather than "in."Some prominentdispensational teachersare following suit.

But if a woman havelong hair, it is a gloryto her: for her hair isgiven her for acovering.

The context of thisverse is clear thatPaul is talking about awoman's naturalcovering that is aglory to herpersonally--her hair.

1 Corinthians11:15

But woman, if she havelong hair, it is glory toher; for the long hair isgiven to her in lieu of aveil.

[Darby radicallychanged the verse tomean that long is hair isgiven to a womaninstead of a veil.]
