My dear Parishioners, In his book en tled Tuesdays with Morrie (Doubleday, New York: 1997), Mitch Albom shares his first conversa ons with his favorite professor, Morrie Schwartz. Albom first met Schwartz while a student at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachuse s, but a er he graduated, in 1979, the young man lost touch with his mentor. Sixteen years later, the two met again, this

me however, the once sprite and lively professor was dying, having been diagnosed with A.L.S. (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease). Schwartz and Albom agreed to meet for what they called their “last class.” On each of what proved to be Schwartz’s last fourteen Tuesdays on earth, and amid tears and laughter, they shared their life experiences on topics such as love, work, marriage, community, aging, etc. On their twel h Tuesday together, the young Albom and his dying friend talked about for-giveness. “Forgive yourself before you die. Then forgive others,” counseled Schwartz. Then he cried as he told how he had had a falling out with a friend of many years; his voice choked with regret over the fact that the friend had died before they were reconciled to one anoth-er. Admi ng the fault to be his own, because of pride and stubbornness, Schwartz repeated what had become a mantra for him, “Forgive yourself, Forgive others.” Then he added, “Don’t wait, Mitch. Not everyone gets the me I’m ge ng. Not everyone is as lucky.” The closer Schwartz grew to death and to God, the more like God he became in his capacity to love, understand and forgive others. Morrie Schwartz died on a Saturday morning not long a er his conversa on with Mitch Albom but his words live on and speak to us today along with those of Jesus ben Sira, Paul and Jesus. Forgiveness is the mo f of this week’s liturgy—forgiveness being the gi of mercifully par-doning and forge ng the faults and failings of others while mending the breaches, ri s and hurs that sin has caused with generous love and sincere efforts at reconcilia on. Forgiveness means forgoing the desire for vengeance and retribu on even when cold, hard logic and calcula ng reason would dictate otherwise. Forgiveness requires an expediency that cannot and will not put off un l tomorrow the act of unburdening and freeing another by pardoning them today.

Sincerely,

Father Ed
